What is true of the most informative, insightful, and interesting posts on hacker news, but is also true of the laziest most worthless posts? They're both flagged, to keep you from seeing them.

andrewclunn··on Facebook adds job listings to take on LinkedIn, Glassdoor
Ha. I got off Facebook largely because employers seemed to suddenly want to use it to stalk potential employees. This will introduce incentive towards self censorship like never before.
andrewclunn··on German parents told to destroy Cayla dolls over hacking fears
I see the plot for a more realistic "Child's Play" reboot here.
andrewclunn··on Valve’s Gabe Newell: VR could “turn out to be a complete failure”
The military and other industries that rely on expensive training simulators are where the market for this stuff is at right now. Going for the consumers first is / was a mistake. VR will make it, but it's going to take longer than the "next big thing" crowd anticipated (like most hings do).
andrewclunn··on The web sucks if you have a slow connection
reddit.com takes 7.5 seconds to load on FIOS? I must be reading this table wrong.
andrewclunn··on Learn C Programming with Open-Source Books
Not a story that interests me, but this is a wonderful blog! I'm definitely following this.
andrewclunn··on Not Everyone in Tech Cheers the H-1B Visa Program
The outsourcing is another issue, as any tech job that can be telecomuted will be moved overseas (with the exception of security risk aversion factors, like with HIPA compliant organizations and such). What this allows is for foreign workers to come to the U.S. too work for less at jobs that require that a person be on-site. Then they have no power to negotiate, as they're here at their employer's whim. If there are going to be worker's protection laws, that I as a citizen am guaranteed, and which raise my cost, then allowing for a loop hole like this is pricing me out of decent work. Come on President Trump, raise that price cap and end this loophole!
andrewclunn··on The Race to Weaponize Empathy
Everyone was so worried about Bill O'Reilly or John Oliver, that they didn't realize that Alex Jones is just as powerful in the internet age.
andrewclunn··on DHS will continue to enforce all of President Trump’s Executive Orders
"They have made their ruling. Now let's see them enforce it." - Andrew Jackson
andrewclunn··on France bans unlimited sugary drink refills
Free refills? How dare you! That stomach doesn't belong to the consumer, it's merely being rented from the state!
andrewclunn··on Google, in Post-Obama Era, Aggressively Woos Republicans
So long as the government contracts and regulatory favoritism are such a big part of picking winners and losers you can bet this sort of thing will happen. Now we have a President who knows he won in spite of many of these big money interests (who overwhelmingly backed Clinton). That people here are complaining about the companies for now acting in their own self preservation, while also condemning money in politics is just... well it's the sort of double think that is best explained by political tribalism.
andrewclunn··on Researchers are beginning to disentangle pain relief from addiction and overdose
So the peer reviewed work cited indicates a decreased level of nausea, but says nothing about addiction:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24954166

There's the study on monkeys later on, but that's talking about BU08028, which isn't mentioned as being an active component of Oliceridine (the main drug being promoted in this article). I actually don't see anything here that makes the claim that Oliceridine will be less addictive. It appears to just be a conclusion that people are supposed to assume is implied without a close reading of the article and information.

andrewclunn··on Anne Frank and her family were also denied entry as refugees to the U.S
I make all my political and ideological choices based on analogies using Hitler or Nazis. Then I post about them on sites related to technology and downvote anyone who doesn't tow the line. It's called being a decent human being!!!
andrewclunn··on Doomsday Clock Moves Closer to Midnight
The use of a "doomsday clock" as a measurement seems like such an anachronism that it's almost adorable.
andrewclunn··on Stanford historian uncovers a grim correlation between violence and inequality
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure." - Thomas Jefferson
andrewclunn··on First they came for the Iranians
I can see the point of a broad stroke policy that does not make exceptions, in that it makes enforcement that much easier. Of course whether there's an actual goal here or this is just posturing to make good on the "tough on immigration" campaign talk is anybody's guess.
andrewclunn··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Wait, so the "#1 bestselling" of something can just mean for that day? They might as well call it a trending list at that point.
andrewclunn··on The Empty Nostalgia of ‘The Sound of Music’
Kid's movies that touch on adult subjects, but at a simplistic level that apes at understanding... Like Marry Poppins and Women's suffrage. It's in books too, like The Whipping Boy, where oppression by the nobles is a whimsical journey of discovery. How to introduce children to adult concepts through art, without creating a false narrative that presents over-simplified half truths? Not sure what the answer there is, but The Sound of Music definitely falls into that... von-trap (couldn't resist the pun).
andrewclunn··on [dead]
It's chances are slim. It would likely mean that the UN would become completely powerless
andrewclunn··on Don't Be a Free User (2011)
Oh good apparently owning up to a mistake and leaving it up should also get downvoted. Gotta love this community.
andrewclunn··on Don't Be a Free User (2011)
Oh wow. Read it but somehow missed that. Well I'll leave the foot in mouth comment for posterity.
andrewclunn··on Don't Be a Free User (2011)
Still gonna use Linux, sorry. There should be a disclaimer, "Does not apply to Open Source projects."
andrewclunn··on Ask HN: Will capitalism survive the robot revolution?
If population continues to grow because of immigration AND it continues to grow in the nations where people are immigrating from, then it's still increasing due to birth rates. I don't know why anyone would take a question that was generally about humanity as a whole and make it US centric.
andrewclunn··on Ask HN: Will capitalism survive the robot revolution?
Yes. Capitalism will exist so long as there is scarcity. Humanity has proven that when technology gives us abundance, we will reproduce until there's scarcity again. Machines can make things more efficient, but not faster than humans breed.
andrewclunn··on Don’t Tell Your Friends They’re Lucky
Though this is really just giving people the opportunity to down vote me twice, I feel the need to expand on this:

The war on self-determination, and promotion of the notion that you're not really responsible for your lot in life is an ongoing narrative. Basically the introduction are always the sanest arguments: There's a history of racism / sexism that people are still struggling to overcome. The benefits of having a safe society with infrastructure. Of course the implications they then allude to are that if you question the wisdom or effectiveness of any particular conclusion or prescribed policy they advocate for, then you are racists and hate public roads (this should sound awfully familiar to any libertarians). Also the hypocrisy of saying that others are just ignorant of all the hidden things that helped them succeed, while also ignoring things like single-motherhood and having large numbers of children as being obvious causes for failure (both for the parent(s) and children) is particularly glaring.

What it comes down to is basically not wanting those who succeed to feel like they are in any way superior to others, by giving all credit to institutions that the modern neo-marxists (who now call themselves progressives) support (such as public school systems), while also not wanting those who fail to feel like they are in any way inferior to others, by giving all credit to institutions that they dislike (like law enforcement). Also the benefits of institutions they dislike are also completely ignored (family, religious communities, etc...)

Make no mistake, this is a lie meant to justify stripping you of your individual freedom by asserting that you are not in fact an individual capable of any sort of self-direction, but a predictable causal robot of the society in which you live. The continuing inability of the social sciences to make reliable testable claims is merely in an inconvenience to their demographics as destiny mentality. That such an ideology, which attempts to shackle you to easily sorted "identities" bills itself as transcending these barriers, is some sick form of double think that is now spread as gospel by public educators (the priestly caste in this faith that refuses to admit that it is one).

I urge those of you who are have children, and are concerned for their well-being to make sure you expose your children to the insanity of this philosophy in the same way that you would seek to vaccinate them from the virus of religious BS. Because make no mistake, if you don't tell them about it with the appropriate criticism and skepticism, others will do it for you, but in an attempt to sway your child to giving up their self-determination to a nanny-state, and embracing a perverse view of justice called "social justice" where the individual reaping what they sow is of no consequence, and all that matters are peoples not people.

andrewclunn··on Don’t Tell Your Friends They’re Lucky
A lot of this "luck" can be traced back very easily to causes like "had two parents who gave a damn" or "had enough to eat eat growing up." The people pushing this narrative that you're not really responsible for your failure / success want it both ways. They want to make you admit that you benefit from living in a peaceful stable society with infrastructure, while also not wanting to hold parents accountable for having too many kids too early, or admit that impact that divorce has on young children. It always comes down to pushing some narrative that is meant to justify further state intrusion into our lives and the dismantling of the family unit, all with pseudo-scientific (see "the gray sciences") justifications and emotional appeals. Spare me the bullshit, I aint buying it.

andrewclunn··on Lyra: a platform for deep, meaningful conversations with people you care about
Signed up. Appears to be very new. It seems the legibility is key, where discussions are meant to be longer form and searchable rather than promote easy of reply. Perhaps a conscious effort to make one think a bit harder about how one writes?
andrewclunn··on Obama Commutes Bulk of Chelsea Manning’s Sentence
Ironically, Snowden likely skipped the country as part of his leak precisely because of what had happened to Manning. Claiming that there's mercy for him if he comes back for a last minute commute by an outgoing President after 7 years... I mean, who do they think they're fooling?
andrewclunn··on [dead]
Before anyone asks, "Why not immediately?" Considering the solitary confinement, a few months in prison (but not in solitary) where treatment could be given to reacclimate Manning is probably not a horrible thing.
andrewclunn··on Ask HN: Have you ever worked on a product that was killed by technical debt?
Working for a company like that, BUT they allowed me to completely rewrite 3 of the tools from scratch in a more modular fashion so that I could do these things without having to modify the old code bases. Now there are two other applications that I still have to support (and were written by a consulting company we no longer contract through). It's night and day. So this isn't really the worst thing if you're given the authority and power to take full control of an application and rebuild it and take ownership of it. Of course, this doesn't really apply to junior devs.
andrewclunn··on HN mods, can we please reinstate the “no politics” rule?
One of the things I appreciate about this community is that occasionally a well informed post with links to relevant information will crop up, even in political topics. Just don't read them. If they're nothing more than click-bait intending to insight a flame war, then they tend to get flagged anyways. About the only bad thing is when a link seems to get upvoted based on title alone (by people who clearly haven't read it), but that's not isolated to political topics and articles.
