andrewblossom··on I Built the Only 2026 WWII Jeep
It doesn't have to be a super expensive hobby. Plenty of old cars need some love, and you can buy them (and their replacement parts) quite inexpensively. In my experience, if you're willing to learn, break a few tools and old parts, get dirty, and persevere, you'll more than likely succeed, and your bank account won't be too broken at the end of it.

(Owner of two old german cars, one which has seen a partial engine rebuild, the other significant chassis welding. No formal training doing either.)

andrewblossom··on Google Gemma 4 Runs Natively on iPhone with Full Offline AI Inference
It won't even let you try Gemma4 until you install a beta update to AICore as of today.
andrewblossom··on U.S. Emissions Jumped in 2025 as Coal Power Rebounded
We were doing that through efficiency-focused rebates and incentives that the current administration decided are not worth continuing. Instead they're "unleashing American energy" and deregulating any emissions-producing industry they can.
andrewblossom··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
This can be solved by using any number of 3rd-party streaming devices: Apple TV, Google TV Streamer, NVIDIA Shield, ...

I've never experienced an TV OS that was reliably better than one of the above, though a Roku-OS TV came close.

andrewblossom··on Subway Builder: A realistic subway simulation game
You're not alone.
andrewblossom··on Want to piss off your IT department? Are the links not malicious looking enough?
My favorite part of mimecast is that their servers apparently can't handle normal volume and regularly time out before redirecting to the destination URL.
andrewblossom··on US safety regulators contact Tesla over erratic robotaxis
A valuation based on imagination?
andrewblossom··on The Who Cares Era
These are usually individual, passion-driven jobs. Others that come to mind include local outdoor outfitters, musical instrument makers, clock repairers, craftspeople (like textile artists, quilters, and jewelers), artisanal food producers, and coaches.
andrewblossom··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
And a good way to keep track of their "progress" here: https://www.project2025.observer/
andrewblossom··on NYC New Subway Map
Mini Metro (https://dinopoloclub.com/games/mini-metro/), one of my favorite pastime games, apes this style by having you design (and revise) a subway map to service an increasingly complex and rapidly growing cityscape.
andrewblossom··on We're bringing Pebble back
Have you reached out to them? I've found their customer support even for out-of-warranty items to be fantastic.
andrewblossom··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
I bought a Topdon TC001 a year ago that in my experience is significantly more responsive and higher resolution than similarly priced FLIR or other name brand options at that price point. It appears there are even more low cost options now.
andrewblossom··on Michelin Airless
Compact EVs aren't "lighter" though, are they? I wonder if it is the inverse of that - heavier compact-style cars with relatively large amounts of sprung weight.
andrewblossom··on HP Instant Ink is “ink as a service”
These are a decent alternative: https://epson.com/ecotank-ink-tank-printers. There is no DRM on liquid ink.
andrewblossom··on Amazon Isn’t the Only Shop Online
I've experienced the same in northern NJ. No available delivery/pick-up slots from any providers.
andrewblossom··on If nearly all Airbnb reviews are positive, does that make them meaningless?
When trying to discern the details between trim levels, I've found looking for actual PDF brochures for that model year is the best route (something like this: https://cdn.dealereprocess.org/cdn/brochures/mazda/2020-mazd...). Nearly every vehicle brochure I've found has a table outlining what is included with different packages and trim levels.
andrewblossom··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
There is some talk of the recently announced PineTime (https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PineTime) running RebbleOS. Should be cheaper than the Mi Bands with a more traditional watch form factor and decent battery life!
andrewblossom··on Nintendo Switch is not USB-C compliant
I've had good luck with this one: http://a.co/86ahf5e though I'm concerned about the recent reports of bricking devices using 3rd-party adapters...
andrewblossom··on Lost Art of Bending Over: How Other Cultures Spare Their Spines
These exist at the top-end of the market: Outlier (https://outlier.nyc/) makes a number of styles using technical/outdoor-gear inspired fabrics cut like more normal trousers and slim-fitting jeans.
andrewblossom··on Nikon “extraordinary loss” kills DL cameras and slashes jobs
If I recall correctly, they use a mix of Sony and in-house designed sensors.
andrewblossom··on First they came for the Iranians
There were protests last night in New York City: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jan/26/new-york-tru...
andrewblossom··on Pebble's next step
It sounds like the developers at Pebble are hopeful that Fitbit will allow the community to step in where Fitbit can't (or won't): https://developer.pebble.com/blog/2016/12/06/developer-commu...

"Further down the road, we’ll be working to phase out cloud services, providing the ability for the community to take over, where possible."

andrewblossom··on Taking the final wrapper off of Android 7.0 Nougat
The Nexus 5 (16gb - $349, 32gb - $399) was released nearly three years ago for a fraction of the price of the comparable iPhone at the time (iPhone 5s: 16gb - $649, 32gb - $749). I think you got a hell of a deal. Upgrade to the 5x for another $350 be happy with another few years of support. Or wait for the new Nexus phones to come out this fall...
