andreipop··on Ask HN: Do coding coaches exist?
I've thought a lot about this problem. Trying to remedy it I built http://coderook-beta.herokuapp.com

Still just playing with it.

andreipop··on Some Lessons From the First 24 Years of Life
I think one should worry if one ever feels they've learned all they need to know. At the same time some 30 or 40 year olds will say things like "just wait until x happens..." and I always wonder why they stop there and don't get into more detail. I guess at 14 most of us wouldn't have grasped theses "truths" which reveal themselves later. Maybe we can't at 24, 44, etc. I'm really interested in what others feel I will learn not because its true (it may be) but because I like to see if our perspectives differ, and why.

... and the fun part will be seeing what changes and what stays the same
andreipop··on Why you should take your 20's seriously
I find your desire to "build a large company" interesting - I shared this until I realized that almost nobody gets out of bed in the morning because they say "I want to build and run a large company" - this is fundamentally unsustainable. Instead finding problems you care about or find interesting might be more motivating and put less pressure on your psychological well being. This helps you get rid of the time pressure you seem to be feeling and will bring a new sense of focus and purpose.
andreipop··on Lockitron: Keyless entry using your phone
Haha this reminded me of our fb hackathon project. wrote about it here a while back: http://designcodelearn.com/2012/06/01/i-was-the-worst-coder-...
andreipop··on Stanford announces 16 free online courses for fall quarter
I also wonder this. Being self taught through online platforms such as this I spend a lot of time wondering how to prove their success at scale. In particular for less tangible learning (i.e. things I cannot point to my github account for)
andreipop··on Q&A With Nine Great Programmers
Big fan of this post, for the format more than anything. I find these types of posts often hard to contextualize without solid reference points, and it helps having differing opinions side by side.
andreipop··on Reasons to Start a Startup In Canada
I'm actually in a similar position and thinking about moving to the valley. I've actually done a lot of research on the visa stuff as well, not sure about the college degree stuff and how it would affect things, but mobility for Canadians to the US seems to be ok? http://designcodelearn.com/2012/08/22/to-sf-from-canada/
andreipop··on The greatest wallet on earth
I don't share the security card problem, but it's a fair point. I think I like to avoid coins intentionally, their weight to value ratio is terrible, they are lost easily, and you never have the right amount and end up having to use a card anyway.
andreipop··on Show HN: My one month side-project, Lucid Tracker: a daily life tracking tool
Nice work man! I wrote a blog post a while back about a QS system I use with some interesting similarities: http://designcodelearn.com/2012/05/14/my-life-tracking-qs-sy...

Thanks mehulkar, glad you enjoyed it

I think any business has a series of key activities (the ones that are primarily resposible for generating ongoing value). What your key activities are depend largely depend on what type of business you are running. For instance, if you sell an undifferentiated commodity your key activities might be marketing (so people think of your widget first) and cutting costs (finding ways to be more efficient than your competition). Other times intellectual property may be more valuable. Many activities are important to most businesses, but some are more core to your business than others. I think the hard part is figuring out which activities are relevant to your value growth and focusing on doing those best.

Identifying and focusing on there is the best way to generate

+1

I think people get carried away by complexity sometimes and forget that building a business can just mean solving a problem better than anyone else and telling people about it.

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for reading. I've always found most people at hackathons seem to be super friendly and willing to help out. The last hackathon I was at (Mozilla YVR) there were a few people there just writing HTML and CSS and tagging along on other projects learning and helping out. It's just an awesome community. Best of luck with Startup Weekend.

Thanks! An incomplete version of the code seems to be up at: https://github.com/andreimpop/Locksmasher - I can't find the final version at the moment.

We are in the finals in the fall - cool to hear about other people's experiences and what worked and what didn't.

Not really looking for a job at Facebook at the moment since I'm working hard on Runnr.me, but I'm excited to meet some of the other teams and people, hoping to move down to Menlo / Mountain View full time soon.

andreipop··on Compelling Startup Pitch Archetypes (with examples from YC companies)
Awesome post, thanks! FYI, the 6th Archetype has a trailing sentence at the end.
andreipop··on Save My House From Apple
Best of luck
andreipop··on I want to help you learn or practice iOS development
Just a random thought, but have you considered doing something like Matygo (http://matygo.com) - I just started teaching a class on there and its pretty cool / interactive with the students. Not sure what type of time commitment you were looking for, but I think they can always use great instructors.
andreipop··on Programming Languages: What tool is right for which job?
Yup getting 503s all over the place.
andreipop··on Saving a Life is Easy, But I Didn't
Thanks for sharing a touching story - a bit of quick digging came up with the new Canadian equivalent:
