anderber··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
Good to know, thanks.
anderber··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
Having tried Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify, Amazon, Tidal, Soundcloud, and Qobuz, I can tell you that Apple Music doesn't have the best UI or features. It's a nice service, don't get me wrong. Top 3 for sure.

Also, the ratings on the Play Store aren't the best indicator of a great app. On the front page of Apple Music there's a 5 star review saying how Chromecast doesn't work. Which is why I prefer to just try all the apps myself.

Due to their stock, right?
anderber··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
I love that Tidal has folders to better organize playlists. Spotify doesn't. So to me, in some ways, Tidal is much better.

> Apple Music is a better choice than Tidal and far better than Spotify.

Only if you're on an iPhone.

anderber··on HBO Max’s Great Looney Tunes Purge
Velma, I believe, is a holdover from the previous regime. The current one is more likely to replace it with some sort of trashy reality TV.
anderber··on Heavy EVs versus Lighter Cars in a Crash Equals Bad News: NTSB
Unfortunately this has always been a thing. Toyota Yaris vs Suburban, etc. It's just that there's a new category of heavy vehicles.
anderber··on NeevaAI
I've been trying it out since it came out and I've been surprised by how good the answers have been. I also like that it cited the sources. Although Neeva doesn't quite have as good of search results as Kagi, I really like all the features that they bring and this NeevaAI really helps make their search better.
anderber··on CircleCI security alert: Rotate any secrets stored in CircleCI
I received an email in my spam folder.
anderber··on Why Google and Apple work to snuff out the mobile web
I think that it really depends on what the PWA is trying to do and its purpose. I think the Twitter, Instagram, and Starbucks apps are both good examples of what can be done. Potentially a lot more could be done with PWAs, if there was more push to make them better.

anderber··on Thousands trapped on Pine Ridge burn clothes for warmth in wake of storm
> there are a lot of places in the world that would be grateful for a few degree temperature rise

That's not how global warming works. It's not a "everywhere will go up 1 degree". It causes more extremes. Hot places can get hotter, cold places colder, but overall, the average goes up.

anderber··on Twitter blocks users from sharing Mastodon links
Didn't they post something against their ToS?
anderber··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
> It requires a fundamental change from the reach model towards concentric social circles. The social network would allow users to arrange into small topical groups called social circles. These social circles would have a cap of 10 (arbitrary number) members. Each user could take part in many social circles. This inherently limits reach and therefore reduces the burden of misinformation, abuse, and moderation.

This reminds me of Google+. They had circles of people that you could share to. I actually thought it was quite brilliant, but in typical Google fashion, they killed it and had horrible marketing.

anderber··on Musk’s $5.7B Mystery Gift Went to His Own Charity
They seem pretty good at getting their taxes down to zero, while us mere mortals have to be happy with deductions.
anderber··on What I learned at Gitlab that I don't want to forget
That's good to hear. I've interviewed with them twice, and both times were pretty awful. I didn't think anyone there wanted to spend time with me, I was just one in a million applying. I get it, but it was still a bad experience enough that I can't recommend them to anyone else.
anderber··on The Slow Goodbye to Twitter
Because of algorithms, even if you don't follow him, you can still see his quotes or likes by people you follow. Although not forced, but hard to avoid.
anderber··on The Twitter Files
Shouldn't they listen to anyone who showcasing someone violating their TOS? Does it matter that it was a staffer in Washington?
anderber··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
Honestly, the Pixel Buds are better than the AirPods. So it's not a guarantee that Apple makes the best products. However, I do like their phones and laptops better.
anderber··on Latam Airlines Airbus A320neo hits fire engine on runway during take-off
Easy to do when there's no oversight and the company "regulates" itself.
anderber··on Agile sucks for software development and I’m tired of pretending it doesn’t
From being in various companies, I can tell you that they each had their own definition of what "agile" is. Your company happens to be that there's plenty of meetings to "communicate" what's happening. We are agile, and don't feel at all what you're describing.

I think ideally, agile should be where you put outcome over output, that's it. And I think that's the correct way of thinking when it comes to wanting to deliver the best product.

anderber··on Rage Against The Machine’s explosive debut album changed everything
That was incredible, thanks for sharing
anderber··on Lula defeats Bolsonaro to again become Brazil’s president
> If the printing can’t be verified by the person right after voting, it’s useless.

I don't agree with that. I'm curious about where a person can verify that their vote is actually the one counted? Because you can't in the US (whether by mail or in person).

Don't get me wrong, I think and individual printout would be great! And even better if you could go online (or somewhere) and verify that the vote counted was the one that you have a receipt for. I just don't think these improvements justify Bolsonaro's claims.

anderber··on Lula defeats Bolsonaro to again become Brazil’s president
I find that silly, what do you mean there's no paper record? Each machine has a print out of the total votes it has in it. These machines are also not connected to the internet. And lastly, he sure didn't have a problem with the machines for the several years he was in office, right? Only now that someone was polling better than him. I find the Brazilian electronic voting machines to be better than how we do it in the US.
anderber··on Why I use Jellyfin for my home media library
I use subtitles in everything I watch, especially new movies, because they seem to lower the dialogue so much and explosions are so loud. It helps me keep the volume at a decent overall level and I won't miss anything.
anderber··on JetBrains Ring UI
You can, just try clicking on it and typing: "feb 22 1985"
anderber··on Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro
The Pixel 7 is 6.3, so a bit smaller.

anderber··on Spotify vs. Apple Music Review – 2022 Edition
I think Tidal's biggest feature is the HiFi audio that is included in their standard subscription. But aside from that, they do have a great app that does Chromecast (for me) better than YouTube Music even.
anderber··on Amazon built a new unit to fix its engineering culture
Why spend time building tools that will help others if you're competing against them?
anderber··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
In Minnesota they have a tax for homes that are not lived in full time for 6+ months of the year. I wonder if something like that would help curb the Airbnbs and investment purchases that happen so often in places like Lisbon.

Building more homes would help, of course, but all the expats want to live in the historic area (it seems), so those prices will still be driven up. From my visit there, a lot of the older folks were the ones still living in the old downtown area, waiting to be priced out of their homes.
