I recently just made the opposite switch, from Scrypted to Homebridge. Just less maintenance with Homebridge.

As long as you have enough memory (Raspberry Pi 4+) it's a great experince.

ancorevard··on The world needs computational social science
Why would anyone would want to corrupt anything with the anti-science that Social Science is today unfathomable, unless corrupting another field is the goal.

"And that's when I believe people do have a somewhat best effort to maximize profits."

Nope. I actually think that if you do scientific research as a company (profit) it may make you less bad/less likely to do fraud compared to academia (non-profit).

Reason is that there are more ways to punish you, employees, board, investors, etc in a profit seeking vehicle, and as a profit seeking vehicle being caught must be part of the profit seeking calculation – in the end, the world of reality/physics will weigh your contribution.

I believe there is evidence that there is more fraudulent scientific research happening in non-profit vehicles/academia. Take for example an area where there are fewer profit seeking companies participating - social sciences. It's dominated by academia. Now look at the replication rate of social sciences.

ancorevard··on Finetuning of Falcon-7B LLM Using QLoRA on Mental Health Conversational Dataset
Problem is that practitioners of mental health treatment themselves cause much damage today. This will not change that. Perhaps we're not too far from an LLM causing less damage than the _average_ mental health practitioner – with far more availability not to mention affordability.

ancorevard··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
Tide is a natural occurring phenomenon.

There is nothing natural about the interest rates policies and stimulus packages from the governments last couple of decades.

ancorevard··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
"SVB wouldn’t have these issues if they monitored the risk better."

Let's see what happens. If only SVB goes belly up, then yes, only SVB was the one that couldn't read the tea leaves of the government's actions. But if SVB is just the first of more banks that will go belly up, then perhaps it is not just an error on SVB's part.

ancorevard··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
In hindsight they shouldn't have bought those MBSs, should have foreseen the coming inflation and the following interest rate hikes, and of course shouldn't have said those words yesterday.

However, sad to see what looks to be another government caused implosion.

- First, via the massive government stimulus COVID19 SVB got enormous amount of deposits in 2020/2021. They have to put that money to work, and the traditional lending it back out was not going to work, the market was already flooded with money from the government. So they sadly locked themselves in those MBSs.

- Then the gov finally reacts to their own stimulus and zero interest rates programs and they rapidly raise interest rates in attempts to lower inflation.

- And as a result, the MBSs that SVB holds are underwater in mark to market. Investments into startups fall, so no more influx of customer deposits into SVB. And finally, due to the difficult market (and VC market), all the startups are drawing down their deposits rapidly through their current burn rate. And SVB ends belly up.

What water infrastructure has California invested in the last decade?

As far as I can tell, all that CA Gov has done is to prohibit any desalination plants from getting built.

ancorevard··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
There is no element of surprise. A real threat is demonstrating your capability and willingness to take action, no use of words no surprise (if surprise then no threat).

This is a warning to Norway and rest of Europe.

ancorevard··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
The most plain explanation is that this was simply a warning message from Russia.

These two pipelines have no longer any value to them, nor to EU. However, what does have value are the numerous pipelines from Norway and other countries to EU. And this is where the real treat is. Russia has now shown it is willing to blow up infrastructure outside Ukraine.

Russia is known to have carefully mapped out the gas pipelines from Norway to UK. Remember how Russian oligark luxury ships carefully navigated close to gas pipelines, while the cover was that the oligark was attending Molde jazzfestival? Similar activity observed by Russian fishing ships.

ancorevard··on Brave Complies With Apple iOS Guidelines
Except that customers loves and trust them.

Trust is the key. People can not trust thousands of random companies/developers. Trust is built up over time through a relationship.

Without Apple, most of these transactions would not take place. This trust, App Store etc., has been built up and cannot be transferred automatically to another party.

ancorevard··on Apple: Person-to-person experiences do not have to use in-app purchase
Just wait until you learn what % retail used to charge developers for promoting, distributing, and selling software.

People quickly forget what a tremendous liberation the App Store created for developers.

It's also not about the developers, the success of the App Store comes from Apple's users. They trust the App Store because they trust Apple's curation/privacy/security. That's what has caused this flood of software purchases from consumers. Trust doesn't come cheap.
