analogic··on Progressive web apps are coming to iOS 11.3: Cupertino, we have a problem
Ya pretty much meant cordova. And just for fun lets throw react native into the comparison mix. Now have 5 levels deep of options on the Web App <--> Native scale, all 5 of them still relevant in 2 years?

Other than install method, are there any significant differences in developer experience or capability between PWA's and old school webview apps?

just hope there's at least enough competition to keep them halfway honest
analogic··on Why Does the Neocortex Have Columns? A Theory of Learning Structure of the World [pdf]
Well maybe better way to state, less 'conscious' and more 'things they're conscious of.'
analogic··on Why Does the Neocortex Have Columns? A Theory of Learning Structure of the World [pdf]
Is it? Personal theory is consciousness scales, like we're more conscious than a bug, but a bug still definitely conscious.

Then like A.I. overlords / borg hive mind more conscious still.

Gotta be the most archaic language still in common use.

I mean not saying it doesn't have legitimate uses, fast well tested and a few procs with the right options can accomplish a the equivalent of a lot of Python, and I only ever learned enough to run a few datasets and port some old code to python/r/vba, but observing the crazy ass shit people did to implement any kind of logic or data transformation was enlightening. Many many "wait people actually do this" moments. Like an entire ancient programming paradigm I never knew existed.

analogic··on Ask HN: Why is software quality an afterthought for many people/companies?
Because _your_ code is fscked, and _your_ code is fscked, in fact all yours codez are facked!!

analogic··on Swipe Left: Privacy Practices of Online Dating Apps
Sigh, being paranoid bout this stuff makes it really hard to get laid :/

"Screw [dating app] lets meet with this cryptographically anonymous app instead" seems like a tough sell for most women tho.

analogic··on 75% decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass in protected areas
Not getting my hopes up, but have seen more this year (Ohio) than I remember seeing in a long time. As in, like maybe 4-5 instead of 1-2, but I'll take it.
analogic··on The impossible dream of USB-C
easy, green cables for 'all of the above.'

then each year as new standards are added you make the shade of green slightly lighter. then you just need to know what shade of green your use supports and make sure you cable and ports are as light or lighter.

analogic··on Ask HN: Learning NoSQL, papers and books
Or in a slightly different form, what I'd personally love to always have an answer for: Is there a fast way to do this complex query in reasonable time in rdbms or do we have to force it into NoSQLish solution? (say.. solr)

After I've optimized my query/indexes to get from 60s to like 4s running through usual stuff and trying to not do anything too stupid, how to get it to <200ms? Maybe better question how to structure data so you don't need the complex query?

I think of this pretty much every time automationy type stuff gets discussed on here.
analogic··on Firefox 56: Last Stop Before Quantum
how so?
analogic··on Firefox 56: Last Stop Before Quantum
In case anyone listening, plz no quantum till replacement for: tab groups, hiding horizontal tab bar when using tree style/tab center, and hiding window title bar under MATE, that as far as I can tell is only possible with hide caption title bar plus addon.

Pretty sure all being worked on and excited for >>speed>> but I'm scarred this transition gonna be really annoying.

analogic··on Privacy
Honestly on verge of switching, despite my deep disdain for the locked down walled garden. Hopefully their privacy stance is a raging success and catches on to every other service that I only minimally use due to the 'surveillance chill' effect. (..goes back to tracking my users)

If only it wasn't for that fscking no headphone jack..
