analog··on Patterns for Managing Large Scale Backbone Applications
The big piece missing from this is RequireJs as the author mentions. We should all know it's good practice not to use global variables so that should be reason enough to use it in itself.

As an example an app we built had a conflict between a jQuery plugin that the frontend devs had included, and a library that we had added with require. Having the conflict only show up in one place rather than the whole app certainly made it quicker to diagnose.

Addy Osmani's tutorials should be required reading if you're just starting out. [1] [2]

The only downside that we saw was that you will have to provide AMD versions of each library you use if you want to use jQuery from a CDN.

As well as being good practice it just feels really nice to have everything you're using declared at the top of the file you're in. The sugared require syntax helps with this. [3]

To be fair a trampoline is pretty irresistible to a child. It's like leaving a big barrel of sweets unattended.

Haha, I guess I should have seen that one coming:)

Do you whitelist or blacklist the internet?

What do you do to stop people emailing code out?
analog··on How to solve the problem that the topmost comments get all upvotes
It would make sense if your comments were weighted higher having a higher karma, but I think all of our comments start at the top to make sure that at least someone sees them and that they can get upvotes if they are insightful/interesting.

"centralized administration of user access"

This is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about. Let the team working on the code decide who has access to the code. Not some person in a different part of the country who has no idea what the code does.

analog··on How to solve the problem that the topmost comments get all upvotes
FYI I think all comments begin at the top. My comments also start at the top and then fairly quickly move down into upvote order, my karma is well below the top of the leaderboard.
analog··on How to solve the problem that the topmost comments get all upvotes
I don't think this would solve the problem as stated as the first comments will still see more votes having been there longer.
analog··on We are currently taking a DDoS attack and are working to mitigate
Yes, but if the repo was hosted on Github rather than internally then the slow VPN provisioning wouldn't have been an issue.

(Good) web services like Github tend to reduce friction, corporate bureaucracies tend to increase friction.

analog··on We are currently taking a DDoS attack and are working to mitigate
Well both of our experiences are anecdotal aren't they. And having a server running doesn't mean that everyone has access to it, one of the issues I've faced is getting approval for VPN access (took a month IIRC) which prevented access to the SVN repo, would not have been an issue with Github.

And that org's infrastructure team could probably claim 5 nines uptime as well.

analog··on We are currently taking a DDoS attack and are working to mitigate
From what I've seen in corporate environments downtime of infrastructure run by internal teams is just as high if not higher than with Github.
analog··on Bitcoin interest spikes in Spain as Cyprus financial crisis grows
Spain's economy is in a pretty bad state at the moment. Worse than the other countries you mentioned as far as I'm aware.

In the town where I live the local police hadn't been paid for two months, so they made up their wages by setting up checkpoints and fining drivers.

When you're seeing that level of dysfunction it's not hard to see how the situation in Cyprus would make people question how safe their Euro accounts are.

analog··on The dire state of WordPress
I did take a look at that, and developers were still complaining about it. I also wasn't too impressed with the way that Woo went about acquiring the project to be honest.
analog··on GoPro Uses DMCA to Take Down Article Comparing Its Camera with Rival
The takedown notice specifically cites the review page, not the product pages, and the product pages are still up [1]. GoPro are lying.

Also worth looking at are the Drift HD, Contour+2, Panasonic A100 HD.
analog··on GoPro Uses DMCA to Take Down Article Comparing Its Camera with Rival
The Contour+2 looks like a good alternative. I've been looking through the reviews after my Hero3 Silver turned out to be a lemon. Main differences seem to be that the Hero3 has slightly better in-camera image processing, but is less reliable.
analog··on GoPro Uses DMCA to Take Down Article Comparing Its Camera with Rival
The recent launch of the Hero 3 was pretty terrible. The CEO had to issue a public apology. [1] Plenty of problems that made the cameras unusable.

They are now basically an amateur camera that has been well marketed unfortunately.

analog··on The dire state of WordPress
My understanding is that for the more complex examples (CRM, auction site) it doesn't work particularly well. Sure you can do it but if you're having to work with Wordpress internals rather than rely on plugins that someone else has written that's when the pain hits.
analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
You're also attempting to Strawman me by presenting arguments as mine that I never stated.

"Your argument though is that those dozen possible treatments justify the entire alt.med industry?"

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
You're attempting the No True Scotsman argument. You say any alt med that works is part of std med.
analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
Ok, if that's not good enough for you then pick one of the other examples that the ACS provide. Or continue attacking the ACS as a reputable source, whatever.

Or go and look up the examples that the med student provided, Inositol or Theanine. I expect you'll find reasons to ignore the evidence there too though, that's the problem with zealotry.

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
Reduced stress is an important quality of life factor. It has been shown to provide this, therefore it works.

"Spiritual well-being and coping. An analysis of 43 studies on people with advanced cancer noted that those who reported spiritual well-being were able to cope more effectively with terminal illnesses and find meaning in their experience. Major themes of spiritual well-being included self-awareness, coping with stress, connectedness with others, faith, empowerment, confidence, and the ability to live with meaning and hope."

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
One of the examples cited by the ACS is the use of prayer. Apparently this has been shown to be effective in some cases.

The use of prayer is definitely part of alt med, and has been shown to work, therefore Nursie is incorrect when he says "alt med does not work".

analog··on What should you open source in your company
In my experience it varies quite a lot. From maybe 5% to 100% or more of initial time spent. Depends on the problem the code is solving and also how good the code was in the first place.
analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
No sorry you're wrong, he responded to me saying 'if it works' with "It doesn't.", and also said "I don't understand how it works because it doesn't"
analog··on Chart.js is back online
Either way, good on them for doing the right thing.
analog··on An apology to open source
If Nick's University has a claim on the code, then the company probably don't have the right to use the library themselves.

If the University decided to assert their IP rights they could either demand a licence fee or the removal of the library from any of the company's products.

analog··on An apology to open source
Yup, you'd want to strike out any clauses like that before you signed any employment contract that had them in.
analog··on An apology to open source
Without a specific licence there would be an implicit contract that the employer could use the library for any projects that Nick has used the library on.

If after Nick leaves they would be on shaky ground if they used it on other projects that Nick hadn't worked on.

IANL but that's my understanding of the law in the UK.
