Yes, I agree. Feminists will go find/make a Feminist bar. I'm not going to hang out in a Feminist bar myself though.

Some people are just too extreme to be happy in a space with standards. They're the police's problem, quite frankly. Unhappy Feminist's are a sign of a healthy society.

If people are not allowed to speak openly about their Nazi opinions, they will simply do it silently between each other, creating an echo chamber.

Imagine that you're having a nice life until a black family moves in next door and turns whole area into a ghetto. Everyone around you tells you to suck it up and stop being racist. Online platforms ban you for racism. Until one day you stumble upon secret underground community of people in similar situations. Sure, some of their claims might be a little extreme, but at least they're the only ones willing to listen to your problems without telling you to shut the fuck up.

anal_reactor··on What is going on with ceiling fans
While I admire the humor of the article, the overall vibe feels like the author simply cannot imagine that practicality isn't the only requirement when it comes to design, and on top of that, thinks that American marketing is the only god-approved style of marketing.

I recommend the author to go and talk to a few women. It's a very demanding request, but I insist on it. Once he understands and internalizes the logic of "my shoes are uncomfortable but they fit my purse", he'll be able to:

1. Understand that different designs have different proportions of practicality and looks, because different customers can have different expectations. I know it's hard to believe, but there are places on Earth besides Arizona, and in some places you only need to turn on the fan once a year gently, all the other days it just hangs there and is visible. Just like a woman won't be putting hiking shoes for an event where she's sitting by the table all day long (men tend to do that).

2. See the concept of "style". It might sound like an outrageous claim, but bear with me: different people like different things! Just because author doesn't like particular design, it doesn't mean that the design is objectively ugly. Shocking, I know. Different people want to build different vibes in their rooms, which is why we have a variety of designs, fitting different styles.

If the author can stomach the idea that there is life outside of Arizona, I'll try an even more radical idea: China exists. Like, really. 1 billion people that aren't Americans. They don't speak English. They don't use Latin alphabet - they actually don't use an alphabet at all! They don't say "Hello, how are you? I'm good, thank you, what about you?". I'd really love the author to spend a few minutes to imagine that. Because my argument is that, even though I have little proof of it, the Chinese might enjoy different ways of having the product presented, and the author is bitching about seeing marketing that was designed by and for the Chinese audiences.

Many times I pass by an ad and I think to myself, "This ad obviously targets American customers but I'm in Europe. Do Americans really think that their culture is the default, universal culture that joins all of humanity?".

> Can't believe people are taking these highly dangerous drugs instead of mustering up a mass of eternal self-discipline they clearly already don't have and never will. Shame on them and the doctors!

That take does have some merit actually. The easier it is for people with low self-discipline to reproduce, the less self-disciplined future generations will be, and they might simply be unfit to handle future cataclysms.

Case in point: imagine teleporting to America in year 1000 and telling locals that they should go through a few plagues in order to build immunity. They'd call you crazy and then rip your heart out, and centuries later die from diseases brought by the Spanish.

anal_reactor··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
I guess it'll come across as obnoxious if I say I never actually used streaming services. I just never liked having to be connected to the internet at all times, and I liked having all my music collection on my private device. When I feel like I want to stream music, I use online radio. I have a few gems in my library that are hard to come across online (because nobody else cares but I do). I've always been a digital hoarder.

I'm not a fan of movies and shows, so I can't share my opinion here.

This is example of what I call "the tipping paradox", and I'm almost sure that this phenomenon has its own proper scientific name.

When asked, people prefer €15 burger no tip, but when actually making a choice, they prefer €10 burger with €5 tip. Similarly, companies state "bug-free code" as a goal or requirement, but then they prioritize other goals over code correctness. My workplace is in the process of completely removing code reviews. And actually, I don't disagree with the decision - my career is short, but I have never seen reviews fulfill any purpose other than to share the blame in case of an incident.

anal_reactor··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Well then, it's a business decision to accept the risks. IMO it makes sense that a percentage of machines would always be offline for maintenance. If you're running bare metal and you cannot afford 10% of your machines being offline at most times, then you're in deep shit if there's even a tiny traffic irregularity, and it's a sign that your management is YOLOing the company. Not uncommon though.
anal_reactor··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
The core issue is that on one hand, police needs power to protect the citizens, but at the same time the power might corrupt them.
anal_reactor··on California bans child marriage, a practice still legal in 32 US states
> Does your judgement suddenly magically get better after you turn 18?

What I see is that we shelter kids from reality because they're just kids, then these kids grow up to be irresponsible adults, then in turn we create more rules about sheltering "young adults" from consequences. It's a feedback loop.

anal_reactor··on Suits Are Better Tech Than Modern Clothes
Suit is the antithesis of clothes. It's uncomfortable and you need to pay attention 24/7 not to ruin it. Basically the male equivalent of high-heels. The first thing I require from clothes is practicality - I don't want to shit myself every time I step into mud or get sweaty or am cold or whatever.

> My point doesn't work if you don't even try to socialize.

Yeah exactly. Alcohol makes it easier to start and then continue.

anal_reactor··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
You don't understand my core premise that given finite lifespan and finite attention, one can learn only a finite amount of things. People have shit to do and they cannot fit one more responsibility into their calendars. Not to mention that it takes two to tango so if you want to be fun and interesting while sober, you also need to convince your friends to also be sober so it's not all awkward.

It's really difficult to square the circle that being sober improves your communication skills long-term yet somehow young people have worse communication skills and less friends that previous generations of alcohlics.

> closer to animal level than to actually joyful ones

That's exactly the point. To experience animalistic joy, rather than the socially-conditioned one.

> It's better to have a maturity and social skills

That's a very silly argument because it doesn't take into account the fact that a day has 24 hours and also people have different natural abilities. Imagine telling a kid with Down Syndrome "come on, you can do it, PhD in physics ain't that difficult".

anal_reactor··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
My opinion is that they want to score military contracts. Once private money dries up because AI doesn't deliver 10x productivity, they can still convince the society to invest in AI because if the society doesn't, the enemy will invest in bigger AI.

Case in point - atomic bombs. France paid through the nose to have own nukes. US and USSR had a very expensive dick measuring contest about it.

anal_reactor··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
> then that implies there's must be a conspiracy acting against said majority.

Or that immigration simply isn't their most important policy, even though they support stricter measures.

Imagine you have a choice between two parties: party A wants to detonate an atomic bomb in the capital but also create well-funded animal shelters. Party B opposes the destruction of the capital city, but they want to turn all puppies in the country into kebabs. What do you vote? You don't want to eat ground puppies, do you?

anal_reactor··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
Because not sharing the benefits of increased productivity with your employees discourages them from adopting new technologies.

If I'm 25 then sure, probably I need to learn the new technology anyway because my old technology will be obsolete before the end of my career.

Still, if I don't like your new technology, I can just switch industries and you lose an employee. You want to force all employees to learn Python while I'm okay with keeping everything in Java? Oh well, I'll find a Java job then, good luck training someone to replace me.

If I'm close to retirement, then unless you pay up significantly, there's zero reason for me to learn the new technology, and I'll resist as long as I can.

Before we got an infinite amount of AI-generated Indians, software wages were sky high exactly for that reason - in order to incentivize people to learn new technologies (coding).

Of course when it's the employer's market none of that applies and you just suck it up. But again, because minimum wage exists, if I'm working for minimum wage anyway, I'll simply choose the least demanding job where I don't have to learn shit.

anal_reactor··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
Which is, surprisingly, a fantastic result, considering literally all other websites of the internet.

Ngl I'm guilty myself too though.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups_in_London

White population of London fell from 97,7% in 1961 to 53,8% in 2021, probably below 50% now. What's happening to Britain is the same thing that British did to indigenous populations during colonial times.

Whether this is orchestrated or not is debatable, but denying simple statistics from governmental agencies in democratic countries is... well... very close to a conspiracy-theory

anal_reactor··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
> I hope they'll find some solution for all those aging, near-destitute, and sometimes abandoned elderly folks instead of telling them to suck it up for the sake of cultural identity.

It can be asked the other way around. Is it worth it to completely destroy the order in the society for the sake of one generation of elderly?

I live in the Netherlands in a black neighborhood, and let me tell you, it's a real shithole. These people are not interested in getting jobs, they just live off neverending money from social programs - with the most expensive one funnily designed to keep them poor for generations - lots of social housing that prevents them from taking part in the housing market going to the moon.

The crime rate is unbelievable. Children literally carry guns around. How do I know? I witnessed a kid shooting another kid with a real gun on my street. Before that I also saw a similar situation from my window one street away.

The lack of respect to anything is obvious. They drop trash on the street because naive taxpayer like me will pay for cleaning. Dudes often harass people on ebikes or scooters because they know that can get away before you react. Loud noise at night? Suck it up.

With the new generation of Dutch teenagers being significantly non-European, homophobia is on the rise. Also, it's pure luck we didn't have terrorist attacks like Belgium, Germany or France.

Naturally, these people have Dutch citizenship, so it's not easy to kick them out. Not that the Dutch are interested - I was legally considered a victim of yet another shooting so I got updates on the legal case, and it was dismissed due to lack of evidence. That's Dutch justice system for you.

The Japanese understand this. A generation of tough times is something a society can easily recover from. Meanwhile you can undo a failed immigration program only with ethnic cleansing, and nobody wants that.

1. That's not true. More and more segments of technology are being dominated by China. China sells lots and lots of everyday objects that are wholly desgined in China, with quality beating western products. They're just small improvements over existing designs of relatively simple things, so nothing makes the headlines.

2. Lots of Chinese technology never leaves China for political reasons, rather than economic/technology ones.

3. If you want to buy a semi-professional machine as an advanced hobbyist, often your only option is China.

4. Apple is wildly known for taking existing designs and improving on them. Why is it good for Apple to do that, but bad for China to do that?

I remember that once my flight was cancelled and I figured out that if I buy a bus ticket "right now" I'd be able to reach my destination in a sensible time. I quickly bought the ticket... for the wrong day.

I called the bus company, a native speaker of my language immediately picked up, rescheduled the ticket, and told me to pay €2 extra to the bus driver.

I was shocked that customer support could be so simple.

BTW I spent 6 hours total spread along 12 months calling an Indian customer service before I got my money back for the cancelled flight.

Motorola is planning to release phones with GrapheneOS. So far only expensive models have been confirmed, but I assume cheapos should follow.

Of course they're not doing this out of good heart. My theory is that China wants to have a popular smartphone that is completely independent from US companies. But hey, once upon a time Google were "the good guys" too, so enjoy the party while it lasts.

An interesting point is that it's important to have powerful China around because they're a capitalist competition to the US.
