amq··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
Android is not sleeping in a PC sense, all processes still run.
amq··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
Not directly relevant, but also for comparison: GitHub Actions with a Mac runner are $0.08 per minute, $4.8 per hour and $42,048 per year.
amq··on Why is Apple's M1 chip so fast?
I see two main reasons:

- 5nm process (1.8x the density of 7nm [1])

- unified memory directly on the SoC

amq··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
Missed opportunities: full-sized HDMI, M.2 storage and a touchpad.
amq··on Background Features in Google Meet, Powered by Web ML
The single biggest missing feature compared to Zoom for my team is background noise cancellation. It's an unfortunate decision to limit it to Enterprise users.
amq··on Packaging Kubernetes for Debian
Running several production clusters on GKE, I can say that it is definitely not a full-time job to keep it up too date and healthy in that setting. I would imagine it's a completely different story on-prem.
amq··on I Think Bluetooth Is Finally OK
Seems like this should be improved with Bluetooth 5.2 and LE Audio.
amq··on OpenWrt Joins Software Freedom Conservancy
Basically, anything with IPQ40xx: https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/tree/master/target/linux/...

Those just work and are reasonably priced (~90 USD).

amq··on Chrome is deploying HTTP/3 and IETF QUIC
I don't think HTTP/3 is even intended as a general-purpose HTTP replacement. Even HTTP/2 is overly complex, so HTTP/1 will most likely stay as a fallback for the foreseeable future.
amq··on Blacklight – A Real-Time Website Privacy Inspector
Next step: server-side tracking. With Firefox and Safari blocking JS tracking by default, many companies feel like they don't have other choice.
amq··on Google proposed Web Bundles could threaten the Web as we know it
Similar thing with their Google Cloud Console: 159 requests, 3.5MB and 13 seconds for the initial page load. Opening any page takes at least 3 further seconds, but usually more like 6 seconds - on a 4-core CPU with 16GB RAM.
amq··on TSMC and Graphcore Prepare for AI Acceleration on 3nm
There are plenty of areas for improvement beyond pure transistor size:

- density

- heat

- resistance

amq··on Firefox Android Build that caused issues is working as intended
I'm using it since the Preview as the daily driver and it has been a day and night change for me in terms of performance compared to the original 68 version.

I just wish Mozilla had done a better job at rolling out the change to existing users.

amq··on Wiki.js
I was looking into open source knowledge / wiki base solutions recently, and I found https://www.getoutline.com/ to be the most usable.
amq··on How we got our AWS bill to around 2% of revenue
Or DigitalOcean, which also offers many of the big-cloud perks like managed db, object storage, load balancers and kubernetes.
amq··on Is WebP really better than JPEG?
There is a way to offer both jpg and webp, letting the browser to choose.
amq··on Apple, ARM, and Intel
I wouldn't call Windows on ARM a niche product, since it supports x86 emulation, enabling, arguably, most of the use cases.
amq··on Russia’s Elbrus 8CB Microarchitecture: 8-Core VLIW on TSMC 28nm
Another benchmark comparison: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https...
amq··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
If there's anyone from Vienna, Austria, we're hiring.
amq··on [dead]
Spoiler: not.
amq··on Ask HN: Is your company sticking to on-premise servers? Why?
Surprised no one mentioned a third option: cheap vps providers like digitalocean or vultr. They've become real contenders to big clouds recently, providing managed databases, storage and k8s. And their bandwidth costs are close to what you'd get in colo.
amq··on Testing Sync at Dropbox
I'm sure Dropbox is first-class behind the scenes, but the desktop app has become simply awful with time, so that I almost feel sorry for them and embarrassed towards other people when I use Dropbox.
amq··on Google Kubernetes Engine is introducing a cluster management fee on June 6
Good point about GKE blocking resources on the nodes. I wish they would at least allow more control over that with the introduction of the master fees.
amq··on OpenWrt 19.07
I'm running 19.07 since the first release candidate on Ubiquiti gear, no issues so far, with uptimes of weeks.
amq··on Httpserver.h: Single header library for writing non-blocking HTTP servers in C
Surprised to see no CI.
amq··on Introducing E2, new cost-optimized general purpose VMs for Google Compute Engine
MySQL 8, for starters.
amq··on Introducing E2, new cost-optimized general purpose VMs for Google Compute Engine
They should be available to GKE as soon as they are available for the usual VM instances. If you can't launch a node pool, I bet you also can't launch a VM.
amq··on Introducing E2, new cost-optimized general purpose VMs for Google Compute Engine
I wish it was simply flat 30% cheaper. It is very misleading that 0.99% of month will be 30% cheaper than a full month, considering that Google Cloud is advertising sustained usage discounts everywhere.
amq··on Introducing E2, new cost-optimized general purpose VMs for Google Compute Engine
Strangely, the E2 type seems to be available when checked with "gcloud beta compute machine-types list", but not with "gcloud beta compute machine-types list --zones". Launching also doesn't work.
amq··on The next generation of wall chargers
Still waiting for the next generation of USB-C hubs. Currently, almost all cause Wi-Fi issues, most will have Windows complain about "limited display connection".
