amonon··on D&D is Anti-Medieval
I believe you are correct; OD&D is the holmes/moldvay/etc. books that existed before AD&D, but I'm not certain.

What's the value of something like Athlytic/Whoops against just sticking to a routine?
amonon··on Five Geek Social Fallacies (2003)
Here is my perspective: Ultimately, we are creatures with complicated social lives. Friendship is not transitive and there are a variety of reasons why two people won't get along, and the fact that you are friends with both of those people only has a mild impact on the chances that they will get along.

depending on your personality this is a recipe for enlightenment or neuroses
amonon··on Accelerando (2005)
I would not but I think the general public is not against the idea. Most people interact with social media on a daily basis, for example, and it certainly has a strong effect on users thought process.
amonon··on Accelerando (2005)
I should read it again in light of that. I did find that Stross's early work (Accelerando, Singularity Sky, Iron Sunrise, Colder War) heavily influenced my worldview and path in life. I haven't touched Accelerando in over a decade although I go back to the other novels on occasion.
amonon··on Ask HN: How To: Internal Documentation?
How do you handle the discovery/relevance issue in a documentation base that is already several years old?
amonon··on Show HN: I made a site that lets everyone edit the same gradient in real-time
The gradients shown are "pretty". I've done some minor experiments generating gradients before and usually arrive at generated colors approaching a muddy brown or a beige grey. Did you take any steps to avoid this?
amonon··on Show HN: I made a site that lets everyone edit the same gradient in real-time
Love this! Most of the visual code I have come across is geometric so this is a nice change of pace.

The United Stated Digital Service is pushing for more government software to be open source[1]. I have no idea how effective it is, but it made me happy to see

amonon··on Bioceres' GMO Wheat Is Safe for Production, US Says
Tangentially, it's interesting how exposure to different social media streams can substantially alter your gut feeling on topics. I am, and have always been, pro GMO. To my mind, drought tolerant wheat seems like an unequivocally good thing to have.

However, I have been consuming more video content from the "organic food" and "whole food" movements so that I can get better at cooking vegetables. The idea of introducing a new GMO wheat sparks anxiety in me. Not for health reasons, but because those movements involve a strong push against monocropping. What do we lose by adding an even more successful monocrop into the mix? It may be more profitable to improve monocropping successfully but is that the best thing for the strength of our supply chains, the use of our land, or the ecosystems our land supports?

I think the answer is that we're not accepting more risk with drought tolerant wheat than we are without. But it is funny how radically social media content on another topic (cooking and eating vegetables) can change your thoughts on something only marginally related.

amonon··on Nuclear reactors a mile underground promise safe, cheap power
I am uniformed on this, but those industries likely take time to scale up. A large scale desalination plant requires a significant amount of infrastructure.
amonon··on Show HN: D&D meets Siri – Interactive voice adventure
I broadly agree with you. Constraints give rise to creativity.
amonon··on How one ED mobilized his department during a mass casualty incident (2017)
If you are interested in disaster psychology and planning like this, you might also enjoy "The Unthinkable" by Amanda Ripley. It covers several notable disasters and the environment that shaped them. It gives advice on the psychology of victims of a disaster, how to prepare for one as an individual, and how to prepare for one as a community.

It was recommended to me by an EMT giving a TECC class. I found the book fascinating and am open to other recommendations in the same vein.

amonon··on FakeTraveler: Fake where your phone is located (Mock location for Android)
Yes, this is the case. I cannot remember the details, but the OS makes applications aware that location mocking is turned on.
amonon··on Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera Data Set for Academic Use
>Given all the other variables that introduce a bunch of noise to the player movement data, I doubt you could ever determine any useful predictive pattern.

Predicting a winner will be difficult but I would not be surprised if you could loosely predict rank (does Warzone track player rank?) off of movement alone. You may be able to predict more accurately by looking at the associations between two players and their movement. From my prior experience in FPS games, positioning, awareness, and aim are the core pillars of success. Unfortunately as far as I can tell from the data set, only player position is tracked.
