amne··on Tell HN: Help restore the tax deduction for software dev in the US (Section 174)
Cue LLM-driven generation of garbage research to release as "useless" so I can deduct actual research.
amne··on Why I no longer have an old-school cert on my HTTPS site
it's in the name after all: [j]ava[s]cript [o]bject [n]otation
amne··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
Just the other day I went to a website to flash a new firmware on a zigbee dongle. Straight from a chrome tab. wild!

Then it hit me: the only thing keeping a rogue website from sweeping your entire life is a browser's permissions popup.

amne··on Show HN: Memex is a Claude Code alternative built on Rust+Tauri for vibe coding
so "vibe coding" is the term to use? I have to say for a me, as a non-native english user, it sounds .. weird. Can't take it serious. I think of Kai Lentit's videos everytime I see it.
amne··on Attacking My Landlord's Boiler
a bit off-topic: Are you running a single boiler and if so, how are you mixing UFH with radiators given there's a ~20C difference between the recommended temps for the two?

My knowledge is that for UFH you run at temps between 40-50C and radiators run at 60-70*C.

amne··on War story: the hardest bug I ever debugged
With the appropiate butterfly wing flap everything is deterministic.

amne··on Hyperlight WASM: Fast, secure, and OS-free
(looks at laptop running a Node app hosted in minikube running on Podman in WSL2 in Windows) of course. easy peasy
amne··on European Cloud, Global Reach
I click "Create new cluster", I see "Cluster plan -> development" for 0 (zero) euro / month with "Up to 30 worker nodes". When it says "Cluster plan" I don't read control plane, I read cluster.
amne··on European Cloud, Global Reach
I don't get how you can advertise Kubernetes from 0 euro / month and then you have to choose a node that costs 3 euro / month.

I have no idea if it's cheap or not but how is this kind of advertising legal?

amne··on Writing a .NET Garbage Collector in C# – Part 1
This right here is peak Microsoft:

  set DOTNET_GCName=clrgc.dll
  set COMPlus_GCPath=ManagedDotnetGC.dll
Good luck understanding this when you come back 2 months later.
amne··on LeetCode but You Can Force People to Code in Light Mode
I'm just here to praise the "Login as guest". Thank you !!
amne··on Meta claims torrenting pirated books isn't illegal without proof of seeding
Tell me you've never googled lyrics without telling me.....
amne··on Where do those undergraduate divisibility problems come from?
You're the second commenter, so far, to mention exclamation marks. What do they mean to you that would bother you so much to point it out, or anyone for that matter? I haven't even noticed them until I read the comments here on hn.
amne··on Show HN: I built a fair alternative to Product Hunt for indie makers
Isn't producthunt (and similar) aimed at VCs fishing for unicorns? The idea being that they'll know to then market your product where it belongs so they can grow it and make their billion. If that's not it, then vcfish.com is $12/year and available
amne··on Tldraw Computer
tldr: needs email to play with it
amne··on AggiesBCI – brain-controlled wheelchair converts thoughts to real-world movement
I can't shake this feeling that BCI-control-anything is a very bad idea overall.

What will happen if, in a moment of weakness, the user thinks to just "W" into the middle of the street? They weren't actually going to, but with a BCI-controlled wheelchair I feel like it's hard to make this distinction.

amne··on picoCAD – a tiny modeler for tiny models
Looking at the video I was instantly teleported back here: https://playclassic.games/games/racing-driving-dos-games-onl...
amne··on I Stopped Using Kubernetes. Our DevOps Team Is Happier Than Ever
Don't bother reading. This is just another garbage in garbage out kind of article written by something that ends in gpt. Information density approaches zero in this one.
amne··on Amazon S3 Adds Put-If-Match (Compare-and-Swap)
1. SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE S3

2. glue jobs to partition by some columns reporting uses

3. query with athena

4. ???

5. profit (celebrate reduced cost)

This thing costs couple $ a month for ~500gb of data. Snowflake wanted crazy amounts of money for the same thing.

amne··on $8k Suzuki from India received a 5-star crash test rating
Euro NCAP does. The safest car right now if you care about pedestrians/cyclists appears to be the Toyota CH-R.

amne··on LICENSE.TXT [video]
Is it only me that needs to see the text to match the sounds to words? I wouldn't know what the song is about from just listening.
amne··on How is the SSD installed – M4 Mac Mini (2024)
Looking at the price difference between m4 and m4 pro I think they're not that worried about users "upgrading" SSDs. Also, good luck finding SSDs that match the speeds you get with Apple provided ones .. at reasonable prices. If this were a laptop I would worry about power draw as well.
amne··on Wazuh – open-source Security Platform
TIL that SIEM, SCA, XDR (and more?) exist. Now to go and find out what they actually mean (and please don't point out that SIEM is already explained on their page).

Clearly parent could have phrased it more explicitly that he knows nothing about this field. But I also see downvoting him as a form of gatekeeping.

amne··on Cognizant Discriminated Against Non-Indian Workers, US Jury Says
well .. if you offer sub-100k/year salary and no american shows up .. did you make a good faith effort?
amne··on Show HN: One – A new React framework unifying web, native and local-first
I get "programmers are also human" vibes reading this. It is so uncanny.

amne··on You're probably not vulnerable to the CUPS CVE
It doesn't help that people rated a CVE 9.something for a PHP vuln in a barely used method of an extension that can be exploited if you use .. I forgot .. ah yes .. IIS.

Peter says wolf too many times?

Maybe a CVE should have a complex score (severity / spread): 9.9 / 4.

severity 9.9 : easy to exploit if you run this .. you're cooked

spread 4 : you most likely are not running this or it's by default in a way that you're not cooked

amne··on Sony, Ubisoft scandals lead to California ban on deceptive digital goods sales
Like having a button that says "Rent" instead of "Buy"? That would be crazy
amne··on Ask HN: Resources for Learning Graphics Programming
None taken. Yes, it's not as polished as some of the more modern resources but I still see value in learning about the old ways.

Also, in case you missed it, most lessons have contributions for many languages and platforms. Just scroll all the way to the bottom. You can download the Perl variant of the 1st lesson if you want.

amne··on Ask HN: Resources for Learning Graphics Programming
I see it's still up after 20+ years: NeHe at https://nehe.gamedev.net/

In 2005-ish I followed what is now called "legacy tutorials" and I just learned a lot about how rendering pipeline works in OpenGL + some basic 3d math and physics. The rope tutorial (https://nehe.gamedev.net/tutorial/rope_physics/17006/) was my favorite.

Also, my highschool math teacher was in awe when I was so familiar with vector math and matrices and it was so easy to grasp the concepts in class because I could visualize everything. This is a nod to a previous post here on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40983734

amne··on How to Lead Your Team When the House Is on Fire
the obvious follow-up to the obvious solution is you don't need to feed 2 extra horses after you're out and you end up with websites counting how many horses are suddenly starving.
