It's just amazing

amir734jj··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
I am a Spotify user for a long time. I don't understand this layoff. They spend millions on podcasts deals ... I just want a music app with good discovery option and offline listening mode. Am I asking too much?
amir734jj··on I've procrastinated working on my thesis for more than a year
The problem is your advisor sent you on an unknown journey. A Ph.D. thesis isn't a postdoc project. You needed guidance on the journey and course correction but didn't receive any.

I also went on an unknown journey but the difference was I had a weekly meeting with my advisor and we talked and tried to find a solution. I wrote a few pages in my thesis explaining all our failed approaches. But the difference was my advisor helped me. He saw me working on a dead-end solution and he said it doesn't work to find a different solution. After 5 or 6 attempts, we found a solution.

PhD advisor is not necessary someone who knows the topic. It's someone who teaches you the research and guides you.

Don't give up.

amir734jj··on Mapping Python to LLVM

amir734jj··on Ask HN: Birthday present for a soon to graduate CS student?
Art of programming by Knuth. Best gift ever.
amir734jj··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
It's a good thing people are choosing to be alone instead of in unmerited relationships and dates that don't get anywhere. I have already spent too much time on dating websites and awkward social events trying to get to know people and none of them worked out. Society has changed and old norms don't apply anymore. People are more career-focused and would rather spend time with themselves than with someone with who they don't have anything in common.

The ratio of women compared to men on dating websites says a lot. Hence, women are choosing to be picky and men have no option but to be accepting of everything. This didn't work out in the long run and we are seeing its effects.

Welcome to reality.

amir734jj··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
I have been using YouTube for entertainment, educational, news for the past 10 years and I am seeing it's try to slowly become TikTok. It's sad.
amir734jj··on How did NPR’s pre-election poll get things so so so wrong?
Yes. Thank you. I'm not very up to date with politics and what I wrote above is just my observation as a voter.
amir734jj··on How did NPR’s pre-election poll get things so so so wrong?
Agreed. It's sad that we are even talking about this and it's even a possibility.
amir734jj··on How did NPR’s pre-election poll get things so so so wrong?
You are right. Wrong choice of words. Thank you.
amir734jj··on How did NPR’s pre-election poll get things so so so wrong?
You are playing with semantics. Please look into Dobbs decision.

amir734jj··on How did NPR’s pre-election poll get things so so so wrong?
I would say they underestimated the impact of federal abortion ban had on women. I live in Wisconsin and seen it first hand. Women who are struggling financially wanting to vote Republican but they don't and they vote democrat because they have young girls at home and worried about their future and having options. It was a mistake on Republicans part to ban abortion at the federal level. Personally, I'm against abortion and I find it immoral but I also think government shouldn't interfere with women's healthcare.
amir734jj··on Tell HN: A hacker's life is in danger, your awareness may be life saving
Wrong! the regime in Iran is terrorist. They have no mercy. Negotiating/bribing will not work. The only thing they understand is international pressure and money.

amir734jj··on Ask HN: Ways to run container inside container for development purpose?
dind: https://hub.docker.com/_/docker

Example: https://gitlab.com/hesamian/milwaukee-internationals-dotnet/...

Run docker insider docker. I use this in gitlab.ci to build docker image and push the build docker image to docker hub/heroku docker image hub.

amir734jj··on Beginning May 3, 2023, U.S. travelers flying within US will need 'RealID'
State issued ID card is not enough anymore for domestic flights because it's pretty easy to clone/copy (just google it ...). Not sure why you are trying to tie it to racism.
amir734jj··on How Iran can track and control protesters’ phones: hacked documents
I'm an Iranian and the current situation in Iran is not good. No internet. Businesses have stopped because of uncertainty and constant protests and crackdowns. I don't know what will happen next. I think it will get uglier.
amir734jj··on ImageSharp leaving the .NET Foundation due to licensing change
I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know
amir734jj··on ImageSharp leaving the .NET Foundation due to licensing change
It's possible to use system drawing in Linux but some people want to use blazor so system drawing wouldn't work, image sharp however works in blazor web assembly.
amir734jj··on 5 Years of Pop _OS
I love Pop OS and have been using it for the past 4 years now. But I am not a fan of the System76 laptop build quality. The shipping was fast, the OS and hardware haven't had any problems and the packaging is awesome. But the build quality comparing to my 2015 mac book pro is lacking. But I will probably buy system 76 again because I am so used to linux.
amir734jj··on Ask HN: What not-profit-seeking project are you tinkering with this week?
I like lexer/parsers, would you mind sharing the repo?
amir734jj··on Microsoft has started layoffs today
Microsoft employee here. Haven't heard anything. There has been hiring slow down recently, but revenue/customer acquisition is going strong. It's a large company, so probably nothing in my division (azure / backups and disaster recovery).
amir734jj··on GitHub Copilot, with “public code” blocked, emits my copyrighted code
tldr Don't use autopilot for anything work related.
amir734jj··on Show HN: I have built a library of screenplays for movies and TV shows
I am a movie enthusiast and I love it. Thank you.
amir734jj··on Ask HN: In C, how to map void* to int propertly
`v` is just a pointer a struct.
amir734jj··on Show HN: Bloomberg Terminal for Individuals
I used to work in a large investment firm with billions in assets. We used Bloomberg API and Bloomberg terminals. It's near impossible to get rid of Bloomberg monopoly in this sector. It's not just data, it's access to data and chat early before something happens to the market. I remember there was a fire in California and before anyone (including major news networks) know who caused the fire they (Bloomberg chat) knew California energy company caused the fire. The companies that pay for Bloomberg terminals are making billions, paying $20k for one Bloomberg terminals is nothing for them.
amir734jj··on Tinyphysicsengine: Minimalist 3D C99 single-header physics engine
impress girls by showing them 3D physics running on embedded devices
amir734jj··on Iranian official admits student protesters are taken to psychiatric institutions
That's because the government doesn't believe these demonstrations (4 weeks now) are legitimate and they will do everything they can to minimize it and/or suppress it. Not surprising.
