Software stuff while floating on this rock through space soaking up sunbeams. (Ex-Heroku, Ex-Salesforce, Ex-AT&T Cloud, Ex-LivingSocial)
submissionscomments
amerine··on Microsoft uses Bitcoin as part of MSVC validation test suite
Seems like the kind of testing I’d expect from Microsoft. Nice.
amerine··on Retrowin32: Async, DLL loading, tracing execution, and Zig
I really love how the author shares their thoughts as the flow through the problems in the post. Great read.
amerine··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
Big Same feels from me as you. I watched countless good things at Heroku get locked behind enormously expensive “enterprise” contracts.
amerine··on Ask HN: People with “prompt engineer” in their title, what do you do?
Write internet satire?
amerine··on Tailscale Enterprise
agree. (Also, hello old friend!!)
amerine··on Heroku has been running a second copy of my scheduler instance
Please pay attention to this comment OP. The zombie dynos were likely not “closed”. Look at your bill closely.
amerine··on Tailscale Enterprise
Tailscale is really nailing service connectivity for the way people are looking at building systems these days.

Excellent collection of enterprise features.

amerine··on Quicker serverless Postgres connections
Excellent. That work’s wonderfully for us too ;-)
amerine··on Quicker serverless Postgres connections
Is your geo-distributed read replicas going to lean on WAL replication?
amerine··on Ask HN: Which tech podcasts would you recommend to a friend?
Came to suggest the same! Was nice to be able to upvote another users suggestion instead!
amerine··on How to build a super-slim smart mirror
It's not that expensive to buy a mirror that covers your TV. I'm not suggesting I have any clue what your friends setup is and if they used a dielectric mirror it was probably pretty spendy compared to the price of TVs today: https://www.twowaymirrors.com/tvmirror/
amerine··on Ask HN: US address for non-American who founded US company but resides in Mexico
I am a US citizen, but have two separate businesses that use virtual business addresses provided by two small mailbox businesses in Oregon that have been painless for all addressing/mail needs. The key point is to make sure your businesses registered agents contact info works and that legal correspondence can get to you through them.
amerine··on GitHub is aggressively caching raw.github, breaking many use cases
Not asking this to distract from the problem but can you link to the raw version of a specific commit/ref?
amerine··on Ask HN: Share Your YouTube Channel
Small World! I’ve been following ya for ages over on YouTube.
amerine··on Ask HN: Share Your YouTube Channel
Nice to find you here! Long time subscriber here! Haha small world
amerine··on Clowns Without Borders
I enjoyed this chuckle… and I agree!
amerine··on How many AMD RX 7900 XTX's are defective?
They recently changed their agreements with card makers and forced very high pricing. They are charging more because they can, it’s the definition of price gouging.
amerine··on It’s not just what you eat, but the time of day you eat it
Any chance you’ve read any books or articles on your theory?
amerine··on Ask HN: Who else is working/on call over Christmas?
I love carrying the pager during holidays. Nobody breaks anything ;-)
amerine··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2022?
Dungeons and Daddies and Corecuraive are a tie for me.
amerine··on Ask HN: What's your proudest hack?
I once realized it was trivial to dynamically load a ruby class & module on a request-by-request basis in a rack app, which invented an easy way for a group of non-programmers to modify a rails apps views by overloading methods in a file called FooBarCom.rb where FooBarCom could be any domain the app was hosting. :-)
amerine··on Automatically generate commit messages using ChatGPT
Just found this, played with it for a second and thought y’all would enjoy!
amerine··on Lastpass Security Incident
Can you elaborate more? Which? Why do you think this? I also agree with you and I think it’s one that rhymes with shome paus werd. But I think it happened early in their “cloud” journey
amerine··on Ask HN: Any good black Friday deals?
Adding a GPU to a Mac, or anything with TB3 really.
amerine··on How to Make a CubeSat
Price.
amerine··on The Calvine UFO photograph
I also saw what you described once in southern Oregon right along the California border, but it was in 1996 and I was a kid. None of the adults around believed I saw an object moving like that and were convinced I had noticed a satellite.

Satellites don’t turn at acute angles without losing momentum. They didn’t believe me.

amerine··on NetBSD 9.3
I know of a few small ISPs that run NetBSD on SOKRIS(sp?) machines to do routing at edge pops.
amerine··on Ask HN: Any solo game developers here?
FWIW, the programming section on twitch often has solo devs working away on projects. You should check that out too.
amerine··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
Brandur will know what I mean when I say, it’s always worked out in our favor at Heroku to soft-delete logicals, but hard-delete physicals. It’s not hard to remember to append a “where deleted_at is null” to some sql, or build into higher order UI’s.

However, GDPR/customer data demands across regimes makes me agree with him and would suggests folks listen. <3

amerine··on My Poor Experience With Azure (or why I'm sticking with AWS)
100% this. Excellent, salient, description of the problem.
