amcoastal··on Show HN: Sioyek – PDF viewer for reading research papers and textbooks
Goes to show you someone can get a PhD in math, do research at a "world class institution", not know what a middle click is, and still be a dick about your technical writing. Does wonders for y'alls imposter syndrome eh?
amcoastal··on What do you really get from IDE-driven development?
Out of all the world's grievances, people who choose something like hating IDEs to pedestal about will always amaze. Humanity is hilarious sometimes.
amcoastal··on Some argue that synthetic data can make AI systems better
This is simply not true. Synthetic data is a huge research arm of ML work.
amcoastal··on Dell deletes Latitude CPU Throttling issue after link is posted here
Is this a conspiracy? Or is the mod team on Dell's forums just ignoring their job and browsing HN front page all day :D
amcoastal··on Pedestrian deaths spike in U.S. as reckless driving surges
Definitely agree with this sentiment. My perspective on receiving more respect in the South probably has a lot to do with being a redneck looking white guy.
amcoastal··on Pedestrian deaths spike in U.S. as reckless driving surges
It really depends. I took an entire geography class back in college called "The South", and a big part of it was defining what exactly the south is. Some people would consider Texas and Florida to be parts of the south, but most do not. Florida and especially Texas, are part of their own thing. You're also right that its partially an urban versus rural thing, drivers in Atlanta or Charlotte can be very aggressive, but its nothing compared to trying to commute in Boston etc.
amcoastal··on Pedestrian deaths spike in U.S. as reckless driving surges
Its just where you live. Welcome to large cities. You can move to more hospitable parts of the country where people still have basic respect for people. The politics in the South sure have annoyed me, but dealing with the public (i.e. people who you don't know) in everyday life is miles different compared to living in NY, CA, FL, TX etc.
amcoastal··on Anyone else feel the constant urge to leave the field and become a plumber?
Seems like something who has never been a plumber would say. If they love plumbing so much, I bet there's a ton of pipes in their house they could replace, but would rather live in a fantasy world instead where they imagine their job is worse than being a plumber to aid their self victimization.
amcoastal··on Newly declassified documents reveal previously secret CIA bulk collection
The Trump administration delivered a letter to Congress in August 2019 urging them to make permanent three surveillance provisions of the Patriot Act. The provisions included section 215, which enables domestic call-record collection as well as the collection of other types of business records.
amcoastal··on Heart-disease risk soars after Covid, even with a mild case
Is it reasonable that the autoimmune response stimulated by vaccination could do this too?
amcoastal··on The DoD is prioritizing open source software
Out of all the comments in this thread, this one has been the most like my experience.
amcoastal··on This app does not support the App Store’s private and secure payment system
I have to admit this thread is the first time Ive ever heard someone calling planned obsolescence a 'conspiracy theory'. I thought it was pretty well understood. Live and learn I guess, couldn't let the tinfoil hat folks have all the fun!
amcoastal··on This app does not support the App Store’s private and secure payment system
Let me know if your 2011 car lasts 20 years.
amcoastal··on This app does not support the App Store’s private and secure payment system
Planned obsolescence is the entire backbone of the American economy. We could get rid of it in one fell swoop, but then basically every company in the country would go bankrupt and then the world. A sad state of affairs. Perhaps incremental improvements and clawing back of Right-to-Repair etc. can give us some semblence of not being facebooters, but also allow our shit-tier companies to adjust.
amcoastal··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Maybe you found the key. Don't sit back down in front of the screen unless you have to. Fill your day with enriching activities, instead of filling your day with screen and breaking it up with the occasional enriching activity.
amcoastal··on Technocratic domination: when government funds science, it controls science
If you thought that article was a good takedown of "science", then I'm sure you'll also like this one: https://timecube.2enp.com/

Down with science!!

amcoastal··on Technocratic domination: when government funds science, it controls science
>the “science” was so captured that health agencies literally changed the definition of herd immunity to pretend that natural immunity was not a contributor despite overwhelming data not only that it was (as it always has been) but that it was far more effective than vaccines. the failure of vaccines to stop spread has been total. they almost certainly made it worse. it’s not at all clear they even help with severity. it does not look that way in the societal data and the studies are so riddled with methodological slanting to shift outcomes that their output is literal bayseian datacrime.

Both the article and the author are coocoo. But that won't stop a bunch of commenters who haven't read it! Fear the ones who did read this drivel and agree with it.

amcoastal··on It could be years until we see a normal housing market
There are tradeoffs everywhere. You have to assume that when stacking millions of people on top of each other everyone will not own a home. That's not a "policy" issue, it's just physics. If you want to live in city for whatever reasons, you just have to take that into consideration.
amcoastal··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
You can be philosophical about "improving", but in the context of the thread and the post, I think we are talking about technological improvement over the last few years as an example of tangible scientific improvement, even if a lot of papers that are published suck.
amcoastal··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
And in the same way, a lot of science done and published in the last 25 years has shown real technological improvement in the world around us.
amcoastal··on Deep physical neural networks trained with backpropagation
It's more of an inference and practical thing. If you want to equip something with limited energy (e.g. a drone using a small battery) with the ability to use a neural network for inference, their system could use much less energy than the typical computational setup.
amcoastal··on The Pandemic Boom Goes Bust
I appreciate the sentiment and the enthusiam, however I am skeptical. I was born, raised, and went to school in west virginia. Bernie might win the democratic primary against Hillary Clinton or Obama but he stands no chance in the general election. The socialism is a bridge too far. Its why Manchin is acting like he is. Though I'm no fan of Manchin for local and personal reasons that go deeper than current national politics. His uncle was sleazy and so are him and his daughter (who have already survived scandal).

Fun story: One of my friends had a photo with Manchin once when he was governor, he literally picked her up and placed her somewhere else like a child. The dude sucks.

amcoastal··on The Pandemic Boom Goes Bust
While I had hoped Bernie would have been elected, at this point I don't think much would have changed if Bernie had been president. If anything, it probably would've made Joe Manchin dig his heels in even further.

At this point I think they know 2022 is gone, and are aiming for a fighting chance in 2024. The only real difference between a president bernie and a president biden, is that in 2023 and 2024, leading up to the election, when the republican congress refuses to do anything, Bernie would sign EOs that would help people, and Biden just MIGHT sign them (being able to use the excuse that republicans wont work with him to do it).

IMO, the only good thing that was ever going to come from these 4 years was not having Trump as president, and possibly an EO reducing student debt and an EO rescheduling marijuana. Nothing else progressive was going to happen even with a president Bernie. And those two EOS might still happen from Biden, but who really knows.

amcoastal··on Nature Neuroscience offers open access publishing for $11k per article
He means per year. Your estimates are generous. For my graduate studies I was paid 8000 a year.
amcoastal··on Facebook versus The BMJ: when fact checking goes wrong
I will never truly understand the infatuation with Hunter Biden. Oh, the son of a candidate to be president/the president is using their position for personal gain in a corrupt fashion? That's certainly not something that has been happening for the last half decade...
amcoastal··on Health care is turning into a consumer product
Exactly but why not blame the people who can't afford health insurance of committing fraud instead! After all if you're dying and have other choice than die or commit fraud, you're definitely a dirty fraudster!
amcoastal··on How to start a successful freelance business as a software developer (2017)
"Deal with autistic people"? What's the difference between you saying something like that and saying you just prefer working with able bodied adults not having to "Deal with parapalegics". Good luck in your future corporate job, I hope its not sitting next to me.
amcoastal··on Health care is turning into a consumer product
You use an absurd scenario, not sure why, but we both know there are tons of times you go to a medical provider where if you could pay less for a slightly longer car ride, you'd do it. But that information isn't even available now. The only fucking industry that is allowed to sell you stuff without telling you how much it will cost.
amcoastal··on Pentagon and CIA shaped thousands of Hollywood movies into effective propaganda
Sure. But I don't run around daily acting like I have a moral high ground and constantly baiting people. I took your bait, and I'm the bad guy? Okay bud. Maybe try not being so angry about stuff that literally doesn't matter. You're constantly enraged on here. I'm not here often and if I can tie your screen name to rage inducing you're doing something horribly wrong with your life.
amcoastal··on Google fined €150M, Facebook €60M for for non-compliance with French legislation
Your attitude is why we can't have nice things. The solutions is to close the loopholes, not throw out the baby with the bathwater.
