ambentzen··on YuE2 · Frontier Music with Symbolic Planning
> I think nobody is going to get rich and famous from low-effort promoting.

Hopefully not, but there will be a lot of people trying, which is the problem. That alone will drown out a lot of human made music and muddy the waters.

"Some of you are going to die, but that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make"
ambentzen··on Crypto investors face tax crackdown as 70% non-compliant
Why is that a stupid rule?

If I sell Nvidia stock to buy AMD stock, I need to pay tax on my Nvidia stock gains.

ambentzen··on Minecraft removing obfuscation in Java Edition
A quick search nets this: https://modrinth.com/mod/pause-music-on-pause
ambentzen··on Tell HN: Azure outage
There might have been, but they didn't know because they couldn't access it. Could have been something totally unrelated.

ambentzen··on Show HN: I created a cross-platform GUI for the JJ VCS (Git compatible)
Looks neat, have you considered releasing an AppImage for wider Linux support?
ambentzen··on Show HN: I created a cross-platform GUI for the JJ VCS (Git compatible)
Doesn't that make it "complete" as opposed to "abandoned"?

Everything does not need constant updates and new features.

ambentzen··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Nobody tell my machine that. I have a 5080 paired with an 9800X3D, no blacklisting of kernel modules necessary (for me at least).
ambentzen··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
DHH is on the board of directors at Shopify.
ambentzen··on Use singular nouns for database table names
If you have self-referential columns you are going to have to name them something else, like `parent_id` and tell your model code about the discrepancy.
ambentzen··on OPA maintainers and Styra employees hired by Apple
I was left with the somewhat opposite feeling. I still don’t know what OPA actually is or does. It has a nice paragraph describing it without saying anything at all.
ambentzen··on Denmark's Archaeology Experiment Is Paying Off in Gold and Knowledge
How would law abiding citizen Joe Random from Nowhere even know where to offload that on the black market?

It's a bit like internet piracy, make it easy and convenient to follow the law and most people will do it.

ambentzen··on Ask HN: Is anyone still using Dreamweaver?
> I've noticed recently that the JavaScript debugger in Firefox can "un-Webpack" (and in some cases un-minify, if I've read the inputs and outputs correctly) the code behind many sites. It's certainly not as approachable as declarative HTML, but I suspect to some enterprising person, that route is still open.

That's just sourcemaps I think. Pretty standard stuff, but the site have to provide the maps.

ambentzen··on Winpopup (2001)
I did that in 8th grade across 3 schools that shared a network. Got my laptop privileges revoked for a few months.

It was just a batch script where I had copy/pasted the same line over and over again, no fancy loops.

ambentzen··on Indonesia is trying to block LGBTQIA content from the internet
> Society has to find a way to promote traditional lifestyles Why?

If those lifestyles are so superior why do they need promotion? It's almost like people are not some homogenous blob, but individuals with their own wants and desires.

ambentzen··on When AI helps you code, who owns the finished product?
> I've plastered a copyright notice at the top of the source - as I've always done...

Do people actually still do this?

ambentzen··on Tax consequences of WIN95 team members keeping a piece of software for testing
> Taxable benefit would occur if Microsoft bought software of others and gifted it to employee. Or if Microsoft could not reasonably expect people to actually test the software, or allowed them to resell it.

Isn't that exactly what they did?

ambentzen··on YouTube is loading slower for users with ad blockers yet again
I don't know about GP, but personally I already have a music streaming subscription so I don't want to pay for yet another one.

Come to think of it, I think I have 2 ATM; Apple Music through my Apple One thing, and through my ISP.

ambentzen··on World's most popular painter sent his followers after me because of my review
You forgot the second part of that post: "I think that's what he wants but doesn't know how to go about it". Which is, to me, clearly another jab at the critic, as if Ben is just trying get followers.
ambentzen··on Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner
Hetzner does marketing. A German tech youtuber I follow does in-video spots for them.
ambentzen··on Homebuilt pickups: How underage teens skirt the law to drive in Sweden (2016)
Slow traffic is absolutely fine, if you can actually identify it as slow traffic.

Just by looking at tractors, cyclists and pedestrians you know they are not going very fast, but a car going 20mph where the limit is 50mph is insanely dangerous because your brain instinctually thinks the car is going about as fast as you are and you have to get quite close to pickup the speed difference.

Here in Denmark you can get a fine for going too slow, it's called being an unnecessary nuisance.

ambentzen··on Police destroy Bitcoin miners with steamroller in Malaysia
If it took 12 hours to get pointed out, it's probably not a well known fact.
ambentzen··on Myths in cycling: wider tires are slower
While in absolute terms rim brakes are probably just as good as disc brakes. The difference lies in the feeling and modulation of the forces.

Also, the disc is a consumable on both types. I have worn down rims to the point where I was scared to use the wheels.

The initial setup can be a bit annoying with hydro discs, but it's a tradeoff I'm happy with.

ambentzen··on Jolie, the service-oriented programming language
Looking at the stakeholders section at the bottom, this looks like the typical academia project that is, currently at least, far removed from the real world.
ambentzen··on Unicode Proposal – Textile Care Symbols
For daily clothes, sure. For sports clothing, synthetics all the way. There is no worse pain in the world than sweaty chafing cotton.
ambentzen··on Linus Torvalds on Rust support in kernel
The last half is basically his own opinions stated as truth from God, which, to me, makes him look like a complete tool. Personally I'm not a fan of parens around the conditional in ifs, but I don't go around spouting that it is the only true way.

It basically makes me write off the first half, even if it is correct (I'm not a linux dev, so I don't know).

Added: From the reply on lkml I'm not the only one.

ambentzen··on Left-wing party opposed to rare earth mining project wins Greenland election
We'll just grant them independence, then it's not our problem anymore. They're always bitching about not being a sovereign state anyway.

On a more serious note, why would we need a bigger navy? Is Russia going to invade because Greenland won't let some corporations mine? Or is it the corporations themselves that will? Also; NATO, baby...

ambentzen··on Copyright infringement by German contact tracing app
Here in Denmark fines for drunk driving, driving while influenced by drugs, and driving while your license is suspended is income dependent. The exact fine is also dependent on your blood toxicity levels. And if you are under 18 or have a low income you can get half off the fine.
ambentzen··on State Partitioning
My understanding is that if you use Google SSO from xyz.com Google can track you only there and not abc.com. So the partition is only lifted for a single domain.
