amazingamazing··on That Viral Photo of San Francisco NIMBYs Shows Why Housing Is Winning
You are silly. Only homeowners get a say? Add renters and they will agree with me, dismantling your silliness. Though I am glad you replied the way you did, at least you’re not shy about classism.
amazingamazing··on That Viral Photo of San Francisco NIMBYs Shows Why Housing Is Winning
Buying a house does not entitle you to a neighborhood, only your house. In any case economics sorts this out. Buy everything around you at market price if it’s a big deal.

It really isn’t reasonable. If they don’t like it they should buy the land to keep it that way. Blocking development in this way is effectively a subsidy to the abutters.

If this logic was applied to everything else people would riot. Imagine if existing local businesses could veto a new competitor opening up because it would create "too much traffic," or if you could veto someone buying a car because it takes up space on your street. We only accept this anti-competitive, anti-growth mindset when it comes to housing.

Zoning only exists because of racism and classism, remember this. After Buchanan v. Warley in 1917, municipalities turned to race-neutral tools like single-family zoning, minimum lot sizes, and setback requirements to indirectly enforce economic and racial segregation. These land-use controls acted as proxies, allowing communities to maintain exclusionary barriers under the guise of local police powers and neighborhood character.

There’s a reason all the people at these things are in the same socioeconomic demographic

amazingamazing··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When AI Bubble Bursts
> that AI models were reaching their upper possible limits in Feburary 2024,

I’m curious, removing coding as a criterion what is more impressive about the current models than say gpt 4o? Give a prompt example. Keep in mind most consumers of AI are likely not using it for coding so this is relevant.

I doubt anyone could give a not coding example where it’s meaningfully better with current frontier than 4o.

Take humaneval. 4o gets 90, gpt 5.6 gets 94%. So what?

https://openai.com/index/hello-gpt-4o/

If an iPhone had a 4o quality model that could run locally frontier models would be finished.

I don’t understand how this works. Suppose someone calls you about some political poll and you hit the button, would it count or not? What about a cold email (there was another such thread about cold emails being praised, i said fundamentally is spam but was downvoted lol).

amazingamazing··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
Strange comment, plenty of parents try and fail to stop their kids to do certain things.
amazingamazing··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
What does this have to do with age verification?
amazingamazing··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
Parental controls don’t solve all of the issues. The same way telling your kids not to do drugs is not a solution to vaping use.
amazingamazing··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
Age checks are inevitable sadly. No one would tolerate “adult” services and goods rendered directly to children without age check.

The main argument is that there is an assumption this data is not stored in the real world, which is only sometimes true. Some places like airports and some concerts, shows, bars, etc. scan identification with digital readers whose data is presumably retained. One reason for this is because fake identification is a thing so defense against this converges to the same solution as digital verification.

Imo best to spend energy thinking of the appropriate solution that minimizes privacy violation than conceptual fighting against the idea.

amazingamazing··on Why the future is local app
Google and apple maps work the same with offline mode.
amazingamazing··on The Cold Email
"Cold email" - I hate this term. Call it what it is. Spam.

And no, personalizing your spam doesn't make it any less spam, especially with AI these days, but this is a hot take for a VC forum whose companies survive on spam.

amazingamazing··on AI's top startups are barely publishing their research
Trade secrets are back, baby!

More to the point, without determining how much work is “worthy” of a paper it is unclear how much this matters.

Most AI companies are either a product and marketing layer over a model or not meaningfully moving any dimension to be worthy of a paper.

Also, formal papers and blogs and “cards” are all being intertwined.

amazingamazing··on Who the welfare state protects shapes a country’s financial openness
Hmm? Outsourcing is the clear counter example. Or do you think it is a coincidence that no outsourced job is more expensive than hiring Americans.
amazingamazing··on Who the welfare state protects shapes a country’s financial openness
Given that you cannot force someone to hire anyone at a given wage what is the solution?

At best all you can say is that if you decide to hire, it cannot be lower than some minimum, but often this results in no job at all.
