alvarosevilla95··on Launch HN: Type (YC W23) – AI-powered document editor
GPT-4 is way too expensive atm for anyone to offer it in their products, unless they're charging _a lot_, or are delegating to the user's API key. It's also very slow and unreliable for any production app.
alvarosevilla95··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
I'd argue none of the above apply to Diem actually. I'm definitely referring to traditional, actual blockchains
alvarosevilla95··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
That still counts as using the key to open it :)
alvarosevilla95··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
No, but only if your suitcase will only open if unlocked by a cryptographically secure key and no one can open it through other methods. They can't steal the suitcase itself either. And you can instantly teleport the contents of your suitcase to an equivalent suitcase held by any other individual on the planet. And third parties can't arbitrarily devalue the contents of your suitcase by printing more of it.
alvarosevilla95··on Why I teach vim
You should read about the language server protocol. As it continues to become the standard vim will match most IDE-specific features while keeping all the benefits of using vim, which if you can't see I won't bother listing here. I'm already working on java 100% from vim and I don't miss a thing from intellij
alvarosevilla95··on Dolphin Progress May and June 2020
Yes. This is a custom implementation, not CGPO itself, but the concept is the same.
alvarosevilla95··on Dolphin Progress May and June 2020
Melee came out in 2001. Neither the game nor it's original console have any networking support.

If you're referring to my comparison, I'm talking about current gen titles. In fact, with this you can now play play cross-country with less input lag than Smash Ultimate offline

alvarosevilla95··on Dolphin Progress May and June 2020
It's not obvious on the website but everything is on Github[0] with different repos for the forked Dolphin build, the desktop app, melee assembly...

As to dev blogs, they have a medium[1] with some interesting posts, but nothing too recent, I hope they'll do one in time with all the new stuff.

On top of the rollback, something very notable they did was realising melee has 3 frames of input lag when running on native hardware, so they managed to remove them from Dolphin when running on 120hz screens. This allowed them to keep those frames as a delay buffer without actually having a real effect on gameplay.[2]

Fizzi actually left his job at smash.gg on November to focus solely on the rollback project. He has a Patreon [0], and the community has shown quite the support: he gained 1k patreons in the 24h following the release. Another main contributor, UnclePunch, who's written most of the ASM to directly interact with the game, also has some Patreon support. There's also other contributors working on their free time AFAIK.

[0]: I'm not affiliated with Fizzi but I'm not sure if sharing his patreon would be spam, so I'll say you can find it in the project website from my previous comment.

alvarosevilla95··on Dolphin Progress May and June 2020
Slightly related, a couple of weeks ago a guy named Fizzi released a dolphin build with rollback netcode support for Super Smash Bros Melee, making it a game with better netcode than most current big name fighters.

The way he implemented it is insane, he had to reverse engineer a way to generate arbitrary game states in game, as using dolphin savestates was not performant enough.

He's also added other amazing features, like in game matchmaking, or my favorite, being able to stream a game state through the Wiis ethernet port, so two players can be competing on original hardware while a stream setup upscales that footage in realtime to 16:9 4k through Dolphin, and also generates real time match stats, saves replays... Incredible stuff.

Here's the project page: https://slippi.gg/ and a video from a top melee player showcasing the matchmaking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erbZV8u6-hA

alvarosevilla95··on Ask HN: What were the things you did that made the biggest impact at your work?
Awareness may not be sufficient, but it's most definitely necessary. You at least recognized a problem, and want to find a solution, even if you haven't found one yet or even tried.

Probably Spanish. It's a horrible layout for developers, curly braces involve alt-gr for instance...
alvarosevilla95··on Hack – A typeface designed for source code
I'm not sure about the origin, but I believe they are some glyphs originally introduced for vim's powerline (https://github.com/powerline/powerline you can see some pics there with the glyphs in use) that allow for cool looking status bars etc on the terminal.
alvarosevilla95··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
Since we're on HN, I'll assume 'his crowd' is software development.

How has apple stopped catering this crowd? Let me give you my opinion.

The new macbook pro's main feature is one that is totally useless to professionals. The touch bar is an interesting idea for the casual user, but for anyone who uses any software professionally, it provides no value as it is much slower than keyboard shortcuts. Not to mention that the lack of tactile feedback means you need to look away from the monitor to use it.

The new design has force a redesign in the keyboard, giving it much lower travel, and it is now a lot more uncomfortable to use (this one in particular is quite subjective)

16GB is just not enough in the era of containers.

The price. It's just absurd and some of the most expensive features (TB) are just useless as I stated above.

alvarosevilla95··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I am not familiar with this visa, but if I understand correctly it's aimed at students who require US entrance to complete their education, is intended for 'short' periods and you must return to your home country for two years before being able to apply for an inmigration visa.

This raises two issues: as a graduate, it would be hard to justify this visa unless I went to the US for a graduate degree, and it would not allow me to start long term career.

I would love to hear your thoughts about this, and thank you for your reply!

alvarosevilla95··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi, I'm a software developer with 9 months experience in a big company with a b.s. In computer science from a top European school.

It seems impossible to get into the US at the moment, and my few attempts have failed. What should my expectations be in terms of getting a good company to accept to sponsor a visa in the current circumstances? Thank you very much for your AMA.

alvarosevilla95··on “Mom, I always told you I'd come back and get my degree” – Zuckerberg
Sorry just saw your reply. Going back to get the degree is just a nice closing for a very impressive trajectory.
alvarosevilla95··on Why do so few people major in computer science?
I agree with you. Computer Science at the appropriate school is a really challenging and gratifying experience.

I would also add that university in general, is more about approaching new and hard topics, and finding a good way to learn and digest them. In computer science you also get to do it facing fascinating topics like lambda calculus or the mathematics behind cryptography.

alvarosevilla95··on “Mom, I always told you I'd come back and get my degree” – Zuckerberg
Really? That's more impressive to you than going to harvard, founding a multibillion company and coming back for the degree?

alvarosevilla95··on Let them paste passwords
Please correct me if I'm wrong, as this is all conjecture.

I feel passwords used to be thought of as a combination of characters that you keep in your head, and should only leave your head when being entered in a password field. Preventing paste discourages storing your password in a file called passwords.txt, and accidentally pasting it somewhere else as well.

Of course, we now understand passwords should have some qualities (larger alphabet, avoid common words/phrases as your passwords) which go against ease of remembering, so we now use passwords managers and other tools.

So this behaviour is probably and old common practice that most people used without knowing why and that's why we still see it even if its outdated and harms security in the end

alvarosevilla95··on An artificial womb successfully grew baby sheep
I wonder what the implications of functioning artificial wombs would be to abortion. Would it make sense to allow people to abort if we could take the fetus from the mother and let it become a baby?
alvarosevilla95··on Introducing Token
Well that depends in what's truly different for you. A quick example, because I'm on my phone, is [1], which is enabling donating to specific people around the world with total transparency through smart contracts

[1] http://www.giveth.io/

alvarosevilla95··on Introducing Token
That's not true at all though. Smart Contracts are being used in a wide variety of great projects.

In my opinion what's really missing is a fiat currency token, that can be legally recognised as actual money for a lot of business to be able to go massive.
