altero··on Motorola Makes The Moto G Official, A “Premium” Phone Starting At $179 Unlocked
>highly prized in countries outside of North America

not in some european countries, FM radio means you have to pay ~20 euro/year per device for radio receiving license in some countries. Stupid, but it means this phone is useless for us as a corporate phone.

altero··on Why I’ll Never Return to Singapore
Should woman go to jail for avoiding children?

It actually makes situation for woman with children much worse, since she is alone while her partner is in military.

Gay couple with children, where both parents would have to go illustrates it well.

altero··on Czech bitcoin exchange Bitcash.cz hacked, up to 4,000 user wallets emptied
If all BTC are on single place, it could be possible to recover them. Seems like well documented case, both parties are in civilized countries and court could take it.

Soom.cz is not very reliable source. Also Czech Linux community does not mention anything.

But according to some users it did not even used SSL!!!

altero··on Low-end laptops:The rise of the Chromebook
No, I usually have 3 batteries. Plug-in is not always possible (airplane, train) or convenient (client office, restaurant). Sometimes I do not carry an adapter.
altero··on Low-end laptops:The rise of the Chromebook
Task which use CPU a lot eats battery much faster.
altero··on I quit my job, and I'm excited about a more independent life
I did this and it was great way to fuck myself. My wife was sick, so I have no other option but to quit and bootstrapped my consultancy business from home.

- most of my friends were in work, so I lost those

- zero unemployment support + paying health insurance from your own pocket. If you are bootstrapping and need some decent runway, this matters (especially in EU)

- Big hole in your CV

- if you stay in metropolitan expensive area, your savings will run out fast...

- traveling while bootstrapping? you can pick only one

- if you never worked from home, your productivity and working habits will sink like a rock

I think better way is to gradually prepare yourself while working. Start some open-source stuff. Learn new language at your work. Do standup comedy over evenings, whatever.

Also try to bargain with (or blackmail) your boss. Workers who are actually qualified, are rare and generally underpaid. Retention is HUGE problem. You could start side project at work, with silent agreement from your boss. You could get work from home (and build working habits for your startup). You could even get location independence for reduced salary.

altero··on Low-end laptops:The rise of the Chromebook
Yet another "PC is dying" article. Booooooring!!!

The reality is that market is saturated, and there was practically zero innovation for the past 5 years (except ultrabooks and SSDs). But as a working tool PCs are not going anywhere.

I want laptop with 4:3 high resolution PVA screen and replaceable battery.

altero··on Qatar: Abolish Exit Visas for Migrant Workers
Happened to my friend in Alaska fifteen years ago. Luckily for him my country allows two passports.
altero··on Qatar: Abolish Exit Visas for Migrant Workers
>The onus is on the expatriate either to find another exit sponsor, who must be a Qatari national, or to provide a certificate that there are no outstanding legal claims against the person trying to leave 15 days after publishing a notice in two daily newspapers.

This seems to be doable workaround. This could be possibly even automated, perhaps start-up idea?

I do not think this could be changed politically, US and those states are best buddies and any serious political pressure would be vetoed.

altero··on They Loved Your G.P.A., Then They Saw Your Tweets
There is spam, scam, phishing...

And it is just question of time before 'personality nuke' will appear. Give us list of your competitors and negative traits they should be associated with. In just three days we will make sure none of them will pass.

There is only solution: send ling to facebook and twitter profile together with your application (in email signature). Personal PGP certificate should be also norm.

altero··on Does Microsoft need a turnaround expert?
My grandmother learned to use Links browser in terminal. I sometimes use telnet to send emails via SMTP. But most people would probably call it 'unusable garbage'.

Usability == productivity.

altero··on Inputs.io hacked – 4100 BTC stolen
I have better question:

If all transactions are public, in theory you could trace user, who has your bitcoin now. Than you could sue him to get your stolen stuff back.

altero··on Do “Shitty” Work
Visit toilet after dinner.
altero··on Outsourcing your chores is a good thing
Outsourcing meals and cleaning is pretty common. Yet another economical article which discovers america.

BTW: when we had first baby, we hired doula for several weeks. Very good investment.

altero··on Mental State of the Poor
Some geek is without heating, misses a few deadlines and gets depression from not heaving regular healthy snack.

So lets start:

1) there is nothing wrong with sleeping long periods of time. Just a century ago most of the Europe hibernated over winter. Awake time could be as little 6 hours, but in that time you could do normal work. My great-great grandfather carved wonderful sculptures during winter time.

2) healthy food is bullshit. Only valid number under that conditions is energy content. The more fat the better. Leafs are for rabbits.

3) I think author skipped a few meals, and got depression out of that. With some practice and reasonable body fat, 3 days without food is not a big problem.

4) Dining out (in McDonnalds) or ordering stuff online is not luxury, but necessity. It might be cheaper to buy stuff this way. How are you going to cook at home if you are homeless?

5) I do not agree with connection poor = depressed. For example some really poor people can still save money for cheap holiday. By putting down this equality, you will be only helping people who are "miserable enough". This creates whole industry with really nasty side effects.

Also Social state is not the solution. I live in state with "good social system". However it has number of conditions, for example if your grandfather has a pension, you are not entitled for any social benefits. Want to marry? Forget it, your family would loose significant part of income.

Lovely part is taxation. If I would send invoice for webdesign for 1000 euro, I would only make 280 euro profit. VAT, income tax, and compulsory social and health insurance would eat most of it.

And the absolute worst part is that everyone has to pay social and health insurance (60euro per month). So if homeless guy (or prisoner after release) gets a job, their first have to pay hundreds euro to cleanup their Social Security number.

altero··on Did a murderer and a sex offender just save Oklahoma $20 million?
Perhaps he had anal sex with his wife.
altero··on Did a murderer and a sex offender just save Oklahoma $20 million?
It is a question how author law is set. But prisoner does not lose rights to own things.
altero··on Did a murderer and a sex offender just save Oklahoma $20 million?
I wonder if Oklahoma purchased license to use this software.
altero··on New Dell UltraSharp Monitors
This is Full HD!!! Your monitor is not even HD! (or at least it does not have sticker)
altero··on Startups Like Berlin Because Visa Rules Are Nothing Like the U.S.
I find it ironic that Germany emigration policy is considered friendly. I live in Czech Republic, but it was easier to move to Ireland than to neighboring Germany.

Germany is very nationalistic state, it had number of exceptions from EU open space. Even now German Police searches vehicles with foreign registration plates (search is nearly disassembly).

German law is VERY unfriendly to startups, and the taxes for companies and workers are very high. I would choose Ireland, Czech Rep or Poland over Germany any time

altero··on Being alone
I am European, but to me that sounds racist "I am white and heterosexual, I have the privilege". Like other people are worth less because they do not have privilege?

I understand there are bonus points for this in America. But it also means that rest of the article is very likely going to be a political rant

altero··on China’s bystander problem: Another death after crowd ignores woman in peril
But this is problem in western cities as well. There was study in London on busy bus station in rush hour, where man was laying on street in agony asking for help. Homeless guy got help in 15 minutes, man in suit in 30 seconds and well dressed woman immediately. It is few years since I read this, so no link.

I also remember woman who swallowed chicken bone and was choking to death for 10 minutes on busy train station, she looked drunk.

altero··on Norwegian Town's Bright Idea Is A Shining Example Of Ingenuity
More mirrors would be needed for mosque, 1000 should do.
altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
BS. You do not need "raw undiluted talent" to create stuff like Instagram. Most successful games today are light years behind 20 years old counterparts.
altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
> I hope and kinda suspect that what you really mean is that if someone doesn't say something that indicates their orientation, it's no one else's business. That's certainly a necessary attitude.

Yes, I think we can leave at here.

altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
Computer is for 'elite' is getting old. I learned programming on XT for $20, my current laptop is worth $120. Cheap programmable calculators are available over 35 years.
altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
> my wife really likes that show, but I haven't gotten in to it

It is not a question.

In many countries it is illegal to ask question about sexual orientation, religion, marital status, age or even race. Assumption is that such information could be only used for discrimination. If someone would be compiling list of gays at my old workplace, I would probably call the police.

Disclosing sexual orientation to close colleagues after couple of weeks is fine. Scarfs and other sings are also fine. Proactive disclosure at inappropriate moment (job interview) would be probably interpreted as harassment (hitting on someone), same way as saying to woman "I am straight". People who organize gay parades etc.. are perceived as extremists who milk public budget.

I hope I explained it well without sounding homophobic.

altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
Hilarious, this stuff comes from some manifesto? Nobody wrote '...in solitude'.
altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
I am arguing that places like "I do not hire woman because they would not go rock climbing with me" are just tiny fragment of huge industry.
altero··on You don't need millions of dollars
My cofounder is women, no employees yet. My last team had 40% woman, some developers, one manager, two sysops. Team was distributed so most people in Europe, some in Southern America, about 30% in India. Questions about sexual orientation are not appropriated at my workplace.

Any more questions?
