As for using Mastodon, I would highly recommend getting an app like Tusky to have a proper 'all in one' experience.
My middle school required career shadowing at the end of 8th grade.
I agree with the first paragraph.
I won't reveal exactly where this is happening because the software is still in a proof-of-concept stage, but KDE folks are working on a 'unified push service' right now.
The browser doesn't, but you can use an XSLT stylesheet like this to make it look a little bit nicer: https://karmanyaah.malhotra.cc/feed.xml
An XSLT stylesheet allows formatting XML content as HTML/CSS. Of course, I haven't solved linking people to feed readers (maybe just feedly), but it could be done with this.

Wouldn't it be easier to just make distributed servers deal with large 'packets' or large individual tasks on their own?
the owner retains control of distributing their voice without a major platform getting in the way

Projects like Matrix.org are also seeing huge growth. Of course these are nothing on FAANG scale, but still far from shrinking.
> every PID is a service commitment involving at least some sweat equity
> They’d double click on the thing and a dialog box would pop that says, “Can’t connect to database server,” and it wasn’t our fault. We didn’t have any control over the database server, but what do you do if you can’t connect to the server, so we got the blame all the same because we were painting the dialog box.
Additionally, supporting UnifiedPush (code and adoption by app devs) is supporting:
1. Non-google app stores (e.g. F-Droid with it's great selection of FOSS apps)
2. Google-free distributions of Android
3. Linux phones
The above amount to a small but non-trivial community, but imho supporting (or participating in) them ethically is something I like.
The initial sync issue is only a problem for large accounts which have joined many rooms. Cactus comments creates a guest user for non-logged-in commenters, and an empty guest account is pretty much instant to load in my experience.
You can go to my cactus comments instance (running on aforementioned 1gb machine) to test out the speed https://karmanyaah.malhotra.cc/tech/2021/06/website-things/
Scratch is used when coding isn't a focus, and mechanical engineering students just want to 'get the job done'.
C++ is used because it's probably the most 'pro' language. Close to bare metal unlike Python, but object oriented and stuff unlike C. C++ is used pretty much any time complex algorithms, threading, etc. are involved during competition.
Recently Vex has been trialing Python in Vexcode, but it's relatively new so they might not have built courses for it yet, if the even plan to.

> how exactly are you supposed to achieve this level of anonymity when you’ve flung untold reams of identifiable content across the digital world?
Assuming that that applies to every single Gen-Z or Millennial is the most "OK Boomer" stereotype ever
It is implemented using Jitsi at a protocol level but the end-user doesn't usually notice that.
I am a student but I don't want to link my personal Discord account with school things, which they keep recommending, FFS.
