als0··on Show HN: Created an App for People Who Hate Planning Vacations
"This app is currently not available in your country or region."
als0··on Run VSCode and terminal on any iOS device
$20 a year https://blink.sh/#choose-package
als0··on Using AirPods as a Morse Transmitter
Awesome. This is why I come to Hacker News.
als0··on Ross Anderson has died
This deserves a black bar. He was a pioneer in computer security and was essential in kickstarting the important field of security economics. So sad to hear about this.
als0··on Apple M3 Ultra chip will be redesigned as its own standalone chip
My question is why Apple would spend sweat and blood trying to make an “extreme” large chip for a very small handful of customers. To me, the economics don’t add up. The Ultra was already going beyond what they need and that at least was sensibly reusing multiple Max dies. Someone describe the effort:reward ratio to me.
als0··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
I didn't think Apple copied anyone. Pretty much all their subscriptions have had plus like iCloud+ and Fitness+.
als0··on VirtualBox KVM Public Release
How do containers have better security isolation than UML?
als0··on Ask HN: 9-yo son wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?
That 3D game is pretty good, to be fair.
als0··on ARM's "Blackhawk" CPU Is a Plan to Have the Best Smartphone CPU Core
CPU would, but I think GPU will remain a blob
als0··on M3 CPU cores have become more versatile
Battery life must be hard to compare because presumably the battery life on the M1 Pro must have degraded by about 10% by now, which is quite a significant difference in capacity compared to a brand new 16" MacBook.
als0··on Maestro: A Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
I think it's possible to run Genode[1] as a desktop on top of seL4 (Genode supports different kernels). However, I'm struggling to find a tutorial to get that up and running.

als0··on Show HN: Beautiful iOS Habit Tracker
How did you open the on-screen keyboard?
als0··on Show HN: Beautiful iOS Habit Tracker
Can’t get past the first screen on iPhone 13 mini. There is presumably a button that’s off screen. I think this has only been tested on large iPhones.
als0··on The value of canonicity (2020)
Quite a few websites don't accept my Revolut or Monzo cards at all, despite being VISA/Mastercard. So there is clearly some way for them to detect these neobank cards.
als0··on Why are Apple Silicon VMs so different?
You can soon run Linux on Hyper-V without Windows: https://www.theregister.com/2021/02/17/linux_as_root_partiti...
als0··on Show HN: Anytype – local-first, P2P knowledge management
Love the design on this site and very much welcome the return of serif fonts.
als0··on Intel, Samsung, and TSMC Demo 3D-Stacked Transistors
What about if you use register windows or special renaming of architectural registers to internal ones? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Register_window
als0··on Whisky: Wine supercharged with the power of Apple's game porting toolkit
All of those today, about an hour ago. As I said, they work fine with Wine on Linux but not with Wine/Whisky on the Mac.
als0··on Whisky: Wine supercharged with the power of Apple's game porting toolkit
Steam games are sadly very hit and miss. In my case more misses than hits.
als0··on Whisky: Wine supercharged with the power of Apple's game porting toolkit
Games from over 20 years ago that work well with Wine on other platforms:

- Morrowind doesn't start after the launcher.

- Manhunt runs at 5 FPS. Five!

- Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey doesn't start

- Deus Ex is too slow to be playable

- Jet Set Radio doesn't start

- Half-Life Blue Shift works well

als0··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
There is a saying in marketing, I forget the specific words, but it can take up to 5 repeated views of the same ad for someone to make their mind up about buying a product.
als0··on macOS Sonoma Boot Failures
Well, this also affects the previous major version, macOS Ventura 13.6
als0··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
Before anyone else gets confused...Windows containers are only for Windows applications. If you have a Linux environment in your Docker image, then it's running on a VM. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/windowscont...
als0··on Frasier Fantasy
It's weird how the final season of Picard is the best one, because the first two were so so bad.
als0··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
I hate how Microsoft bribe and bully their way to success, despite all their third rate software.
als0··on We’re opening up access to Gov.uk forms
How can French police enforce things outside of France?
als0··on Adam? ... is there a reason your laptop is in the fridge? (2006)
> till the console died eventually of water damage.

That's so sad!

als0··on Ask HN: Best Ad-Free iOS Apps?
> There must be tons of ad free iOS apps

You say that but they’re actually really hard to find because discoverability in the App Store is terrible. There is no way of filtering for them either.

By the way, that’s a very cool app - thank you for sharing!

als0··on Reorient GitHub pull requests around changesets
Wow, why would they spend so much energy rewriting Rails code into React?
als0··on Arm IPO to kick off today
ARM probably provides 10x world impact/value compared to LinkedIn.
