alphabettsy··on OpenAI asks White House for relief from state AI rules
I think those are less of an issue. They want to train on paywalled news articles, magazines and books. In addition to other media that the average person would have to pay for or would otherwise have limitations applied.
alphabettsy··on FTC can't afford to fight Amazon's allegedly deceptive sign-ups after DOGE cuts
The oligarchs will get exactly what they paid for (seemingly even more than usual) with this admin.
alphabettsy··on Columbia Expelled Student Protesters For the First Time in Over 50 Years
Like Jan 6?
alphabettsy··on Ask HN: If you use MongoDB, is there any reason to use Kafka?
I don’t believe this question can be answered without knowing what you intend to use it for. Just because a technology can be used to do something doesn’t mean it’s the best choice.
alphabettsy··on Are electric cars that much cheaper to operate?
Those definitely can be issues, but I can’t remember the last time, if ever, I had any of those other than a starter battery replaced before 100k miles.
alphabettsy··on X users are unable to post “Signal.me” links
You seem to have an incomplete understanding.

Freedom of Speech goes hand in hand with Freedom of Association. You are free to speak and spread your ideas, you are not free to compel others to help you to do so and you are not entitled to an audience.

I don’t have to let you stand on my porch to speak anymore than Instagram has to allow you to post things or Costco has to allow you to hold lectures in the food court.

alphabettsy··on Go's new map implementation in 1.24 is powered by Swiss Tables
Easier to skip the X link and go straight to GitHub imo.

alphabettsy··on Judge tells agencies to restore webpages and data
That’s an interesting way to reframe what happened, no doubt how it will be portrayed on Fox News.

Telling them to restore the information that was already there temporarily is hardly telling the president what to put on an agency site.

It’s a temporary injunction. Extremely common legal procedure pending a real decision in the case.

alphabettsy··on CFPB's 1,700 employees told to "not perform any work"
Where did you get the salary figure and headcount? Neither seem to be correct.
alphabettsy··on Kentucky Cops Raid Wrong Home, Kill Innocent Man over Alleged Stolen Weed Eater
How’s it too weird? Seems to happen at least once a year somewhere in the U.S.
alphabettsy··on Tesla Cybertruck Becomes Extensively Corroded After Exposed to Magnet
Tons? I can’t think of any typical modern car with recessed headlights other than the Jeep Wrangler.
alphabettsy··on Prometheus 3.0
Victoria Metrics is well worth the migration. Much better performance and lower resource utilization in my experience.
alphabettsy··on Mercedes spends $8bn/year on R&D
Mercedes might be bloated, but they also make over a dozen different vehicles including some commercial vehicles. They also, in my opinion, make vehicles at a level of quality and experience that Tesla can’t match especially at the mid to high-end.
alphabettsy··on We Know One Big Loser in This Election: The Mainstream Media
A major part of the conservative brand is pretending to be the downtrodden underdog. Conservative media has massive reach from mainstream like Fox News to social on YouTube and TikTok.
alphabettsy··on M-series MacBook SSD storage upgrade (non-official) [video]
Performance seems quite poor in Efficiency mode and Efficiency seems quite poor in performance mode. https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/s/hgwjlsjXIW

Seems like AMD is closer.

alphabettsy··on Dito – an advanced Layer 7 reverse proxy server written in Go
Completely disagree.

Use something off the shelf that’s mature and tested until you encounter such complexity that it’s no longer feasible or practical.

alphabettsy··on Dito – an advanced Layer 7 reverse proxy server written in Go
Boulevard has to be compiled at some point. Wouldn’t it extremely simple to setup a GitHub Action to build Caddy in the way you desire?
alphabettsy··on AI won't replace human devs anytime soon
How is it different for you than using StackOverflow and GitHub?
alphabettsy··on React on the server is not PHP
It’s still HTML, CSS and something. It’s different but not that different except now you use JS frontend and backend. It’s also not 2002 anymore.
alphabettsy··on Thunderbird for Android Beta has been released
So actually just K9 Mail rebranded as Thunderbird.

Is there an Android email application, Gmail not included, that looks and functions like iOS Mail?

Looking for something not ugly with general polish, combined inbox, etc.

alphabettsy··on Goodbye API. Hello RSQL
GraphQL, but SQL.
alphabettsy··on Eric Adams Staffer Left FBI Interview to Delete Encrypted Chat Apps
That depends.

If you’re working in government and in some cases outside of government you have communications retention requirements.

Then there’s the destroying evidence once you’re aware of an investigation part.

alphabettsy··on LAPD raid goes from bad to farce after gun allegedly sucked onto MRI machine
Maybe crime is actually higher because of low trust and general ineptitude and ineffectiveness. The police in many many places in the US have a local reputation of being useless. That can’t be much of a deterrent.
alphabettsy··on Tesla Full Self Driving requires human intervention every 13 miles
Running red lights and stop signs is unsafe. I’ve experienced it and there are many videos demonstrating it including very recently.

It’s amazing. It’s better than adaptive cruise control, but it has a long way to go because it’s often enough unsafe.

alphabettsy··on Don't ever hand your phone to the cops
Fortunately, though it may not be well known, on iPhone you can press the power and volume up simultaneously to disable Touch ID or Face ID until the passcode or password are entered.
alphabettsy··on Don't ever hand your phone to the cops
The article puts the important part at the bottom.

> There are some minor protections built into Apple and Google’s current systems — you can display an encrypted ID without fully unlocking your phone, and various authorities can scan your ID wirelessly if they have special readers.

Don’t hand over your unlocked phone.

alphabettsy··on Two in three shoppers won't buy products in locked display cases
I have ordered things to be delivered more than one time recently rather than wait for an employee because I didn’t need it urgently, but it was on my grocery list.
alphabettsy··on How the iPhone 16's electrically-released adhesive works
Maybe you’re right. Or maybe people aren’t brainwashed and instead are buying what they want.

We in tech, myself certainly included, often have an idea of what people should want or prioritize rather than what they do.

alphabettsy··on How the iPhone 16's electrically-released adhesive works
> Apple that pushed everyone to the non removable in the first place.

How so? If removable batteries were favored by consumers it would seem the Android devices that offered them far longer would’ve continued to have them.

alphabettsy··on How the iPhone 16's electrically-released adhesive works
This seems very unlikely since the phones have been getting easier to repair rather than harder.
