alophawen··on Marc Benioff: “I don’t work well in an office”
> Only if you live in a country with decent public transportation

So only in every country in the world except USA?

alophawen··on Are any words the same in all languages?
IIRC family relations and counting is most shared across cultures. Also a few words related to farming.

For example "mouse" is the same in ancient Babylon, even with the double meaning of a lady's private parts.

alophawen··on Baresip – An Open Source modular SIP User-Agent with audio and video support
I managed to get video working between 3G and SIP, so I expect so.

I developed 3G video phone dating in 2010.

I recall bambuser also used to have a live video streaming over 3G app around that time.

alophawen··on Baresip – An Open Source modular SIP User-Agent with audio and video support
Last I worked with telephony (around 2010), IIRC we recieved calls over 3G network as SS7/H323 using Dialogic hardware and converted them on the fly to SIP as they entered our systems.

The whole PBX was running on SIP using Asterisk.

alophawen··on PHP-Tokio – Use any async Rust library from PHP
Not every PHP dev is a junior.
alophawen··on Why SQLite does not use Git (2018)
Not really.

alophawen··on Kunga: Ancient Mesopotamians created the world’s first hybrid animal
> Earliest that is known, that is.

Of course. the article being discussed is about this new found insight about this being the earliest known example.

> Among archeologists, the kunga is known as one of humanity’s first beasts of burden. Now, DNA research suggests that this striking equid may have also been the earliest human-made hybrid animal.

alophawen··on Homebrew's analytics have moved to the EU and away from Google
> I find moving away from GA to be really cringe.

GA was found to not comply with GDPR, so unless you want EU ban you have to leave GA

A Swedish company just got a huge fine: https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/03/google-analytics-sweden-gd...

alophawen··on Zink brings conformant OpenGL on Imagination GPUs
Yes, everything is a conspiracy
alophawen··on WinLinux 2000
IIRC early versions of Ubuntu allowed to be installed in C:\Ubuntu
alophawen··on Liberating the MacBook Air 2013 with Linux
ARM has been a mainstream target for Linux years before Asahi linux. See Raspberry Pi for example.
alophawen··on Ask HN: Was tech always so scammy?
Your company can only pull the rug like this because the public is not very picky it seems.

A real human transcriber still outperforms any automated system in existence.

alophawen··on Ask HN: Was tech always so scammy?
Thanks, I mean speech2text, the youtube auto-caption feature specifically. Perhaps you have enjoyed it. I regularry use it due to bad hearing, and it is hilariously often mistranslating stuff that a human never would, simply because it does not understand context. It is a dumb system.
alophawen··on ChatGPT outperforms crowd-workers for text-annotation tasks
Why would I need to prove anything. The unproved claim is in the paper.
alophawen··on ChatGPT outperforms crowd-workers for text-annotation tasks
No. ChatGPT or any other LLM model requires to be trained on curated input in order to demonstrate anything useful. If you would train it on a stream of hallucinations, you would end up no better than hallucinatory noise. Already fooling some, though.
alophawen··on Ask HN: Was tech always so scammy?
> Is this true or is there just a massive gulf in application at the moment?

It is only true if you drink the cool aid.

Speech recognition - Siri still have major issues undestanding me. Youtube text2speech routinely mistranscribes because it simply have no understanding of the language.

Machine translation is hilarious at best and dangerously wrong at worst.

Machine vision still could not spot the difference between pastry and furry animals last time I checked.

All of these are examples of non-working over hyped tech. It is not a list of "basically" solved problems.

alophawen··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
> How can audiophiles continue to exist with knowledge being so easily available?

I think having a look at the current political climate answers this by itself.

Knowledge has lost much value, and anecdotal reasoning is at pre-education system levels.

Intelligence are declining in all ages [1]. And now top that with hallucinating AI:s that people without contextual knowledge can't even spot when they are making things up.

We're in for a good ride.

alophawen··on ChatGPT is now finding bugs in databases
Can confirm. Was banned from /r/golang for speaking well of Rust. I use both.
alophawen··on Sweet Shell: With Oh-My-Zsh, SpaceVim, Starship, True Color, and Demo Mode
Since author is showcasing cross-os setups,

I think it is appropriate to mention WezTerm.

The cross-os terminal emulator with multiplexing and is instant startup on windows as compared to seconds for Windows Terminal or iTerm2.

It allows for a consistent terminal setup across Windows, macOS and Linux.

alophawen··on Tiniest x86-64-Linux emulator
Petty remark, comex.

Their pitch is "tiniest".

alophawen··on Wickr Me is shutting down December 31, 2023
So AWS bought Wickr in 2021, and now they shut it down.

Let's hope they buy capitalism next.

alophawen··on How does Windows decide whether your computer has full Internet access?
Yep, that's how viruses spread kids. Better install some McAffee.
alophawen··on How does Windows decide whether your computer has full Internet access?
Yes Twisell, opinions not yours is a rogue AI.
alophawen··on AI found a bug in my code
Who cares, really?

There are people who believe in god, too.

alophawen··on AI found a bug in my code
> Why is this so contentious?

Please follow the discussion revolving copilot if you really have no clue.

alophawen··on AI found a bug in my code
TLDR; AI found logic issue that would have been trivially found by classic TDD.
alophawen··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
Windows is trolling versioning in 4D.

This is "WSL 2, 1.0".

The software that was released as WSL2 some years ago, is some other version apparently.

alophawen··on Chrome Responds "No" to JPEG XL
Neither of your links support your claim that Firefox avoided adding Webp support because it wasn't technically superiour.

Instead, what happened was that WebP started to be used on the web and this broke websites for Firefox users.

Since Firefox is by no means dominant on the web, we had to follow suit or lose more users.

alophawen··on Ask HN: How do you focus on work for long periods of time?
For now.

Give it some time.

alophawen··on Windows 11 runs on fewer than 1 in 6 PCs
Your absurd quote usage does not give words a new meaning, you know?
