allisdust··on US aircraft shoots down new airborne object over Canada
Its basically a pressure cooker. It's strong but there are no relief valves (apart from nationalistic saber rattling on various internal social media). When the pressure is sufficiently built up and the valves aren't sufficient they will blow but that is also why they keep taking provocative measures. To keep the valves working.
allisdust··on US aircraft shoots down new airborne object over Canada
Forced labour camps, genocide, authoritarian, cyber warfare against other nations, salami slicing neighbours, purposefully violating air space over other nations. I don't think China needs any demonisation. This is just showing its reality.

If anything both sides of the political spectrum doesn't want to get into showing China as the demon because unlike the previous cold war, they are not sure if they can win it or even force a draw. China is too powerful as it stands and getting more powerful as years pass while the current superpower is busy fighting it self with culture wars.

allisdust··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
There is an enemy balloon flying in your sovereign space and all you could think about is it enables the other side of the politics? Would you say the same thing if its an enemy war plane. And there is no way to to tell which is which just because it looks cute and fluffy floating in the air.

I'm not from the US but at this rate your country doesn't need any external enemies.

allisdust··on Rewrite it in Rust
On the contrary, I feel rust could be a great language for students because the borrow checker will slap sense into them from early on and each error it throws teaches them a little more on memory, data safety.
allisdust··on Google Play Developer Antitrust Litigation
Because they have cornered the market for top 5% incomes while leaving the rest 95% to their competitors. Since their market share is always less, they always get less scrutiny. Outside of developed world, no one uses apple products unless paid by their workplace (for example mac books) or if they are in the top 1% of their country.
allisdust··on FCC threatens to disconnect Twilio for illegal robocalls
What's stopping robo call companies from using regular sim cards once all voip providers close their doors.
allisdust··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
The problem is, the ones valuing it most are the ones getting it the least. My guess is that if they do end up getting it a lot, they might end up with the same conclusion as you.
allisdust··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
The problem with this approach is eventually people who think this way are bred out of gene pool. Monogamy has been successful at continuing human race for quite a long time by providing stable growing environments for kids.
allisdust··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Not just that but also lean heavily towards entitlement of one sex and exploitation of another.
allisdust··on Evidence that Adani Group has engaged in stock manipulation and accounting fraud
It can. Indian Govt protects/can intervene through LIC India which invests in companies like this. In the past during major downturns, LIC with its huge cash pile acted as a backstop.
allisdust··on ChatGPT in an iOS Shortcut: Smart HomeKit Voice Assistant
Does whisper model support real time transcription?
allisdust··on Launch HN: Odigos (YC W23) – Instant distributed tracing for Kubernetes clusters
I'm using Rust (with warp framework if it helps). I can help test if thee is a docker compose :)
allisdust··on Launch HN: Odigos (YC W23) – Instant distributed tracing for Kubernetes clusters
Is it possible to use this for non kubernetes setups (for example, a single docker container or a single server).
allisdust··on Telling your inner critic to chill
Or may be by realising that there is always someone at top and someone below you in everything. And hopefully that will reduce the urge to be at top of everything and that results in compassion towards one's own self.
allisdust··on Boston Dynamics’ bipedal robot Atlas can now grab and toss
But on the bright side, we have cheap smartphones now and can spend time on endless consumption of entertainment. All our bright minds are slaving away at 9-5 jobs thinking hard on how to make people click ads.
allisdust··on Netflix has created a self-fulfilling cancelation loop with its new shows
Thanks for the corrections.
allisdust··on Netflix has created a self-fulfilling cancelation loop with its new shows
It wasn't nearly cancelled. Robert Jordan picked sanderson and passed on his notes, ending. He even wrote the last parts of the book. It's planned as well as it could be.
allisdust··on Netflix has created a self-fulfilling cancelation loop with its new shows
One of the worst book to series adaptations ever created. There was no sensible reason for the drastic changes in plot and characters they have done. Wish they would cancel and retry it with some other creative team.
allisdust··on Quitting the rat race
To put it in another way, if we are trying to paint a canvas white, there is always a more whiter color that we haven't yet achieved. It will continue till we realise there is no perfect white or dark. Just shades of it.
allisdust··on Show HN: Sketch – AI code-writing assistant that understands data content
I don't have any experience with pandas. Can this directly connect to a db and run queries there (video seems to load a csv file).
allisdust··on Reverse engineering a neural network's clever solution to binary addition
Are there any true analog adder circuits? If so are they also less error prone like digital.
allisdust··on Reverse engineering a neural network's clever solution to binary addition
totally off topic: Any pointers to tutorials/articles that teach implementation of common neural network models in javascript/rust (from scratch) ?
allisdust··on Revisiting KDE
This is a common enough problem that Windows power toys used to have a way to open terminal from explorer right click menu. Very useful functionality.
allisdust··on Supporting the use of Rust in the Chromium project
I think its the best of both worlds. Mozilla gets to focus on Firefox while other companies contribute and grow the rust eco system. Having no real sponsor makes companies see Rust as less of a threat and more of an opportunity. Similar to Linux.
allisdust··on Eggs are 60% more expensive than last year in the US
They are also much more ethical compared to the factory farms and caged chickens. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if the eggs are of higher quality.
allisdust··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
While I cannot comment on your long term problem, you can boost your focus temporarily with a combo of L-theanine and caffeine. Works great when you take it after breakfast. Takes an hour to kick in and is effective for around 4 hours. Having a good night's sleep helps a lot when doing this.

For maximum effectiveness, do not try to multi task while doing this. Just think about the problem and let your brain sort it out on its own. Major difference with and without is the lack of tiredness of mind when attacking hard problems. Brain keeps hacking at it till a solution is found.

allisdust··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
By that definition, you shouldn't be using computers or calculators or contacts application on the phone. These tools are augmenting our own computational units we carry around. Sort of like a external storage or a external tpu.
allisdust··on Reintroducing bison on tallgrass prairie doubles plant diversity: research
Better than their current life in pens with same outcome. This actually could be quite humane compared to what we do now.
allisdust··on Five mildly anti-Buddhist essays
>> Intensity and difference need to be encouraged—genuine striving and passion. The courage to love fragile transient things, to form deep attachments and let them sculpt and wound you. Desire for stasis and placation is the default. Desire for something more meaningful is the relatively unsung alternative.

This last part doesn't make much sense because this attachment is the default state of most beings. There is no effort needed to form 'deep attachments' nor is it any special when you why get wounded by these attachments because that's the expected outcome.
