allcentury··on US beef prices have soared but farmers aren't making more money
There’s research now that high density rotational grazing does the opposite.
allcentury··on Astrophysicists Puzzle over Webb’s New Universe
Such a fun read, looking forward to more
allcentury··on Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work
Manual testing as the first step… not very productive imo.

Outside in testing is great but I typically do automated outside in testing and only manual at the end. The loop process of testing needs to be repeatable and fast, manual is too slow

allcentury··on Countrywide natural experiment links built environment to physical activity
I’d like to see a study like this for young kids. Anecdotally, I ran through the woods until I went to college and stress about the urban life I’m providing for my kids
allcentury··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
You should add Claude code to your setup and be amazed. Tmux with vim, Claude code and git work trees is amazing - now the choke point is… me.
allcentury··on Apple files emergency motion to become defendant in US vs. Google [pdf]
> Plaintiffs proposed a remedial term unique to Apple that would forbid any “contract between Google and Apple in which there would be anything exchanged of value.”

Wow

allcentury··on Brood War Korean Translations
I loved this article, thanks for writing it.

I attempted playing a few world cyber game US regional matches and I was always amazed how much faster everyone else was. Then I remember when they live streamed it from Korea and I saw how fast they played and I was blown away. From a strategy point of view, something so basic about the game that I missed was when a blog introduced me to some math for a protoss zealot power up that defeated a zergling in 2 hits rather than 3. That's when I realized this is a chess game and I got hooked.

allcentury··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2023)
Such a beautiful part of Cape Cod!
allcentury··on What good cash-strapped hiring looks like
Not in today's high fuel costs world but those flights are very cheap, it be like going from LA to Vegas on Southwest. It be $100
allcentury··on What good cash-strapped hiring looks like
Optimizing for money is a guaranteed flight risk for any employer. High attrition is something to avoid at smaller companies as it greatly effects morale
allcentury··on Why Does the US make it so hard to be a doctor?
The limit of residency slots is in the article.

> A much more sensible system would to make medical school free so that the salaries don’t have to start off so high.

That's not how any labor market works. Your salary isn't determined by how much debt you rack up. Doctor's salary's are high because the supply of doctor's is so low (especially primary care).

The article covers all the points you're debating (much better than I).

allcentury··on Google staff squirm as remote workers face pay cuts
It took me a long time to realize that these weren't CoL adjustments.

Companies want to be competitive in your local market so they can retain you and so they can "hire the best".

Where this gets murky is now everyone is remote so is there really a local market?

allcentury··on WhatsApp scaled to 1B users with only 50 engineers
Absolutely. This is also when bigger and more pervasive bugs enter the conversation. Decisions that kicked the can 2 years ago are now a big problem and no one team can fix it.
allcentury··on What Is the Data Lakehouse Pattern?
You got me
allcentury··on Ask HN: 30 years old with no career
Are you in a technical role? I'm a business major, been an backend engineer and now manager and debating between a MS in CS and an MBA.
allcentury··on Cities with the Best Work-Life Balance 2021
Site looks great, congrats on the launch!
allcentury··on In January, there were more real-estate agents than homes for sale in the U.S.
Averages are not a good metric for this field. NAR itself uses median to make it look more balanced than it is [1], but in reality - 80% of the transactions goes to 20% of the agents.

allcentury··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
Depends - Boston can be cheaper if you don't have a big commute and the public transportation can help. Source: I've lived in both.
allcentury··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
This is not an antagonistic comment but do you have any sources to share about this? I've lived in both cities and feel like I should know more about this.
allcentury··on Beyond the Code: Mining Self-Admitted Technical Debt in Issue Tracker Systems
It's so hard to prioritize tech debt and usually those cards only come back to the conversation when it blocks a new feature or causes a big bug.

Now as a manager, when new work comes in I ask my team if any solution for the new feature would allow us to also pick away at any of the tech debt cards. There is usually always a few and we plan it into the deliverable timeline.

allcentury··on 3.28M file for U.S. jobless benefits
Also worth noting the population then was 231 million, of which 110 million was in the labor force.

So today: 3 mil / 160 mil - 1.9%

1982: 670k / 110 mil - 0.6%

allcentury··on A Man Who’s Spending $1B to Own Every Pop Song
I think he's buying the publishing (mechanical royalties).
allcentury··on When good ideas make bad business
I had the same thought:

Sell this product to insurance companies so they can recommend cheaper/safer drugs to their customers, or show the more expensive one and if it truly had better outcomes. Everyone benefits from that.

That said, the medical establishment is a tough tough domain to move.

allcentury··on Kids Who Get Driven Everywhere Don't Know Where They're Going (2012)
In my neighborhood, on a dead end street we would make cars wait while a hockey play was in flight. One more second please Mrs. Stevenson!

That same street is a ghost town not really because of cars but two things. 1. Empty nesters didn't move out and 2. The kids that are there would rather be in front of a screen then wonder outside.

If you saw a kid outside you would jump out the door and play. That doesn't happen like it use to.

allcentury··on A Gentle Introduction to Bayes’ Theorem for Machine Learning
I've used Bayes for classification before, is it still the go to for that?
