allcentury··on History of AOL Warez
Really great find!
allcentury··on History of AOL Warez
Oh my - of course, how could I forget...
allcentury··on History of AOL Warez
I remember learning how to add intro music to my VB project and made my entire family watch. It used Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' - I cringe and laugh at that memory. I think another prog had that as it's intro music so I was just trying to copy

those were the best!

Thanks for sharing this, just in awe at some of the screenshots and remembering high school all over again. How could I forget about Fate and the awesome artwork they always had! http://justinakapaste.com/fate-x-3-0/

Funny enough I also got banned for "life", whatever that term meant. I got netzero for free for a while and that's actually how I found my replacement for AOL ... IRC. That community really helped me go from tinkerer to full on coder in a short summer.

Same! I used to spend hours picking the right theme song to bundle on the opening splash page to ship with my software that never worked.

I left tech in college and only got back into in my late 20's, happy to be back but with a bit more maturity.

I remember trying to write punters in VB, phishing bots, etc. I thought progs were the funniest things ever and I thought I was so clever because I never had a subscription to AOL, I would just use another '30 days free AOL' CD that I collected every time I went to the mall with my parents.

I am happy I never did anything too stupid but from a CS perspective I learned a lot very quickly.

allcentury··on This Could Be the End of Facebook
I'm not sure I see the causal relationship pointed out by the article. J&J's products, on paper, killed 3 people and no one in their right mind was going to risk being killed just because they had a headache. They recognized immediately that by not solving this issue for the consumer they risked tremendous losses. James Burke took a huge step and not only squashed the potential risk of his products but actually made them even safer.

What lives did FB put at risk here? If there's even an analogy to J&J it's that a few claims on the bottles label weren't true for _some_ of the consumer base.

The article said he felt indifferent about his previous and current careers.
allcentury··on How to avoid picking the wrong technology just because it's cool
Fellow golfer and tinkerer - we are a product of the job markets. Hot employers typically want new and shiny on the resume in addition to fundamentals, seems like everyone is playing the same game...
allcentury··on Dash for iOS: Back on the App Store
it's hard not read that parent comment without a bit of skepticism, especially after what the author of Dash was caught doing.
allcentury··on Malcolm Gladwell rips into Stanford University's request for donations
I'm not a tax expert so I can't answer the question on why universities would do that. As far as Apple goes, I'll assume they'd like to at least beat inflation and holding cash is usually done for regulatory reasons.
allcentury··on Fission: Serverless Functions as a Service for Kubernetes
Your article mentions the reason you chose client code vs docker images, which I understand and can agree with. However, is there any plan to support docker images in place of client code?

What you're suggesting [initially] is very similar to what the folks at iron.io did but I'd really want to ship containers all around, not pieces of code. Iron.io addressed that a little too late in my opinion and their feature set around docker leaves a lot to be desired.

IMO, AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions are going to support docker in the near future, they have to if they want their ecosystem to be adoptable by all.

According to her bio, she works in Stripe's machine learning department so clearly a smart gal and appears to have a great amount of humility - enjoyed her post, was easy to digest and a light read.

allcentury··on Discogs Turns Record Collectors’ Obsessions into Big Business
I've been a heavy user of discogs since 2004. I've always been obsessed with producers and songwriters, ie the people who actually write the music I love. It's allowed me to discover alias of my favorite producers and to me that is invaluable.

allcentury··on C for high level programmers (slides)
As someone who just reread "C Programming Language", in chapter 1 they teach you how to count occurrences of characters so I'm not sure I understand the sarcastic tone of "you're not going to count foo in a file". C can be used for many things, I don't think the author of the slides dod a great job of describing "when" C is the right tool for the job.
