alistproducer2··on Show HN: Need to send something quick?
One other thing: you should really consider making this embeddable or as a wordpress plugin or browser extension. I'd be willing to pitch in and help with that if it something you're interested in. I've done a lot of extension and wordpress dev.
alistproducer2··on Show HN: Need to send something quick?
I LOVE this. I usually email myself for use cases like this but this is much simpler and efficient. Thanks for building this.

One observation: you should clearly label the pin as such. If I hadn't read people's comments here I wouldn't have known what to do.

alistproducer2··on RxNDA.com: Painless Commercial NDAs Online
I used WordPress. I leaned a lot on plugins which helped keep my defense time down to around 10 days.
alistproducer2··on RxNDA.com: Painless Commercial NDAs Online
I created a tool that's very similar. Https://sendnda.online I'd be interested in comparing notes. After I built it I lost interest in marketing it. What's your stack look like?
alistproducer2··on China's New Wave of Internet Censorship: Name Verification for Online Commenting
At least here in the states, social media + anonymity hasn't exactly been a boon for human progress. I will never support the laws being proposed in places like the u.k and China, but I like the fact that we are forced to grapple with these ethical issues when laws like this are proposed.

Humanity is mainlining an experimental drug in social media. What makes it insideous is that most don't realize it. Governments are grappling with how to insulate themselves from the threat this tech represents; when will regular people do the same?

alistproducer2··on Beginners Guide to Vulkan
Can someone give me a non-graphical use-case for learning Vulkan or just GPU-based programming in general? I've heard of hardware acceleration. Is it something like writing your routines in a language like Vulkan and offloading the computation to the GPU?

Are you saying that human-caused global warming is a hoax?

alistproducer2··on As Coding Boot Camps Close, the Field Faces a Reality Check
I've always had a problem with the phrase "learn to code." It assumes just being able to encode a thought in a programming language is good enough. It isn't. Having a thought worth encoding is what separates "super junior" devs from ones who actually know what they're doing. Being able to formulate worthwhile, efficient solution to problems takes more than 12 weeks to learn. There's no substitute for time and experience. One of the reasons traditional college works well is that it forces you to spend a long period (~4 years) immersed in the discipline: thinking and reasoning about computer problems. Do you come away from that with everything you'll need to make production software? No. That still necessitates experience. You will, however, be able to learn from that experience more efficiently because you've got the fundamentals.

I work at a large company that absorbs tons of MIS/CIS grads. The non-CS grads that excel are the ones that are constantly hungry to teach themselves new things but for the most part they suck compared to the CS people. I can only imagine how much worse these bootcamp folks must be.

alistproducer2··on Alaska’s thawing soils are now pouring carbon dioxide into the air
The author addresses this. I suggest you read the book before making assumptions.

I recommend you read "Money: The Unauthorized Biography [0]" You'll never look at money the same way again. Money is not a commodity even though we treat it as such. It certainly is not a finite resource.

Plenty of money gets created everyday for thing far more stupid than trying to save the world. Look at how much money has been created (and will be spent) for no good reason at all in the current cryptocoin bubble. The massive capital gains are going to be cashed out and spent somewhere, creating market distortions, making people who contribute nothing insanely wealthy. Money is not sacred. Better we use it to try and save the world than to treat it as if it (and the market) are some all-wise, ever-perfect allocator of human and natural resources.

The culture change would be huge. I'm curious how the rank and file would respond.
alistproducer2··on Voyager's 'Cosmic Map' of Earth's Location Is Hopelessly Wrong
Good. I'm not sure giving other species a map to our planet was such an awesome idea in the first place. Although, what if we just pissed them off more by giving them wrong directions? They might be like "we were going to come in peace, bu then you wasted so much of our time with those shitty directions that now all you base belong to us."
alistproducer2··on 18-year-old asks man for advice on her startup, he texts back sleazy messages
>people who don't have the urge to hit on people they find attractive are going to be less...

No, I'm listening to women. I'm watching the cat call videos. There are lots of guys out there that have these thoughts. What percentage they are? I don't know and don't really care because it doesn't matter. They exist. Period. Saying as much doesn't harm anyone. Not saying so does.

My original message stands; if you feel like being an asshole to a woman, resist it - be decent.

alistproducer2··on 18-year-old asks man for advice on her startup, he texts back sleazy messages
Its pretty obvious to all that a generalization is just that. By definition it doesn't include the entire population. The urge to hit on a woman you find attractive doesn't make anyone a doucebag - it makes them a straight/bi male. Not all of us, but a pretty good chunk. And to be clear I'm not including egregious things like unsolicited dick pics as "hitting on a woman." But good for you if you've never wanted to let a woman know you were interested while in conversation with her. How saintly of you to never have such a lurid thought.

This is the best explanation I've found:

alistproducer2··on 18-year-old asks man for advice on her startup, he texts back sleazy messages
Here's the thing: for men being decent requires effort - especially online where the risk/reward ration of being a douchebag seems so tantalizingly < 1. That's obviously changing because doing stuff like this outside the confines of dating sites is becoming much riskier. IMO that's a good thing.

I think men will always have to fight the urge to not "go for it" with women they find attractive. In a way, we're kinda hard-wired to do that. That doesn't mean that we can't or shouldn't fight the urge and be decent to women - especially now that women everywhere are speaking up and letting us know how this kind of behavior makes them feel.

Addendum:

The first reactions to my post are pretty negative. I can see why (over-generalization) but on-balance I don't feel like my post is negative. The core message is - be decent. If the volume of women's complaints are a measure, I'd venture to say there are a lot of men out there that struggle to do so. If you're not one of those guys- awesome . But a lot of dudes are and the first step to getting them to treat women well is to vocalize the expectation that they do so and maybe while we're at it, not trying to shame them into decency by pointing out how awesome you are and, by contrast, what horrible human beings they are for having unacceptable feelings.

alistproducer2··on The Rising Return to Non-Cognitive Skill [pdf]
Seconded. Non-cognitive has a pretty clear intuitive meaning so to then define term to mean almost the polar opposite doesn't make any sense to me.

Not to be too snippy but this just seems like a way to light lots of VC money on fire. Maybe they've already got assurances of the value of the data from customers? Sign me up. I'll gladly blow through some of that sweet, sweet VC dough (just like Uber and Lyft).
alistproducer2··on I’m an Ex-Google Woman Tech Leader and I’m Sick of Our Approach to Diversity
At this point, I find these discussions tiresome. Enough with the politics on HN. Everyone has picked a side and the last place a mind will be changed is the context free world of Internet arguments. The fact that these post get so many votes doesn't mean they're valuable discussion. It just means that even among the supposedly enlightened, we are attracted to drama just like everyone else. I wish the mods would do more to kill these garbage posts.
alistproducer2··on Neo-Nazi site moves to Google after GoDaddy dumps it
IMO if you're going to run a site like that, don't be surprised if you're forced to self-host. I am a little confused by the article. Did the stormer lose it's domain registration at GoDaddy? If so, I really wish someone else had bought it and squatted on it just for the lulz.
alistproducer2··on Airbnb’s ban of Nazis in Charlottesville sets an important standard
This is a slippery slope I'm happy to walk on. Reasonable people can agree that no safe harbor should exist for Nazis.
alistproducer2··on ‘Ready Player One’ is a terrible book and it will be a terrible movie
I was wondering if I was the only person who thought the trailer was terrible. I only watched it because the reviews were so hyperbolic. This article is right: the source material is supremely mediocre.
alistproducer2··on SoundCloud faces do-or-die vote by investors
I honestly don't understand the hate. If you're going to DV me at least take a sec to read the thread or let me know what your issue is. The thread has some good responses from Juan; that's really the only reason I posted it here. I thought of going decentralized because (at the time) I loved soundcloud. I used it as an artist and also as a listener. I've been around long enough to know that their model was not sustainable and eventually all the great content would disappear. Decentralized makes sense for something like SC. Let the people who find it valuable share in the costs of serving it a la bit torrent.
alistproducer2··on SoundCloud faces do-or-die vote by investors
Same here. The EDM catalog was/is? awesome.
alistproducer2··on SoundCloud faces do-or-die vote by investors
I pretty much saw this coming. Posted to a IPFS group last year about using IPFS to make a decentralized soundcloud clone. I was lucky enough to get a response from Juan, the creator of IPFS.

I was thinking about the CFC thing the other day. We'd still have that hole there today if it we're for sane politicians willing to do the right thing. I fear we're doomed this time though.

alistproducer2··on Four Earth-sized planets detected orbiting the nearest sun-like star
I'm going to show my nerd colors here but having a thought like this has almost ruined Star Trek for me. For me I often think about atmospheric pressure. There's no way that beings from so many different planets could exist on a single star ship set at 1 Earth atmosphere.

Maybe someone knowledgeable in this space can tell me, but is a planet's atmospheric pressure reliably proportional to its mass?
