alistproducer2··on Google Glass is getting a second life in the manufacturing industry
I tried the halolens at united this year. Wearing it for 5 minutes was unbearable. I quit the demo early because the apparatus was uncomfortable. The field of vision was really small and the illusion was broken really easily. Obviously the tech should get better, but it was no where near prime time.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: 27 year old with a MSc degree in CS. No job experience. Am I screwed?
With no experience you need to apply for entry level positions. You won't, or shouldn't, get positions above that with no experience.
alistproducer2··on Google won’t be able to resist listening in on your conversations
I do. I have been working with raspberry Pis to experiment on " plug and play" services. My first use was a box that used webdriver to perform final transactions on your behalf, like Mint, but on your own server.
alistproducer2··on Anthony Bourdain on not having debt
Nope. 2 income, low 6 figures. There are pretty significant shelters for us middle class folks. $36k available in 401k contributions alone.another $6.5 k for HSA. $5k for childcare spending along with credits and deductions for the same thing. The key is to have a cost of living where u can afford to take advantage of them all.
alistproducer2··on Anthony Bourdain on not having debt
> Nobody likes paying high taxes, but I don’t mind.

It's actually amazing how little most Americans pay in taxes yet we complain. This year my effective tax rate was ~8%. Of course this is by using every legal tax shelter available.

Considering what I get from the Federal government here in the US, I think 8% is actually fair. If it spent more of my money doing thing like taking care of home and quit with the empire building I'd be happy to pay more.

alistproducer2··on Kids in 'Netflix Only' Homes Don't Know What TV Ads Are
We cut the cord a while back and have noticed how strange ads now seem to all of us.
alistproducer2··on Is Facebook a Structural Threat to Free Society?
The events of the last couple of years caused me to evaluate the psychological toll that me self-induced exposure to media, of all forms, was taking. I came to the conclusion that with social media, mankind was participating in the largest social experiment of all time and just hoping that things turned out well. I decided the results, so far, have not been promising and I no longer wanted to participate. I deleted my FB and canceled cable. Now I chose what I'm exposed to. I advise more people to do the same.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: What makes a great API documentation in your opinion?
I like reference APIs mixed with examples. MSDN is great when it does this and pretty horrible when they don't. There's nothing worse than a highly composed API (think Android) without examples.
alistproducer2··on Airbnb raises $1B at $31B valuation, became profitable in 2016
I would think that being well overdue for a recession and being in an objectively overvalued market would be a good reason to not want to get in now lest you be the one to IPO a week before judgement day. I heard on NPR today that one, if not the only, bull market to last longer than the current one ended with the dot com crash.
alistproducer2··on Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified (2014)
I had to convince female I know to apply for a position she wasn't exactly qualified for. She did and got the job. Women are socialized to not be as aggressive here in the US, which is a shame because there are lots of bad people in jobs just because a better woman never thought to apply.
alistproducer2··on World War Meme
I really hate to burn Karma, but I'm going to disagree.None of the polling data bares out your assessment. The majority of his voters were not poor ex-coal miners. The average income was somewhere around $70K/year.
alistproducer2··on Uber’s vice president of product and growth Ed Baker has resigned
That's a great quote that mirrors my thoughts. Even though conspiracies are very real, people that see conspiracies everywhere are really searching for order in a chaotic world.
alistproducer2··on The Other Half
Three years ago Jason was speaking at the vintage computer festival in Atlanta. He gave a talk about emscipten and all the cool things they do with it. I talked with him for a bit. Super cool and knowledgeable guy. I wish him well.
alistproducer2··on YouTube TV
I didn't think of this. Wouldn't that be a matter of purchasing a better, stronger antenna?
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How do you imagine the future of household shopping?
Pre packaged goods will mostly be ordered online: anything people currently buy with feeling the need to physically inspect first.

Some people may buy fruit and vegetables sight unseen. I would suspect there would still be a sizeable market of people that won't and will still go to markets or stores.

I'm not sure if this means a return to smaller, specialty stores or if only big box stores that have everything in one place like Walmart, Will Survive.

alistproducer2··on YouTube TV
Why would I do this when a dtv antenna is a one-time charge of $35? Kodi + prime + dtv = never paying for TV again. Ever.
alistproducer2··on WordPress on .NET
Thanks for sharing this, but what exactly does this provide that WP doesn't to justify the cost?
alistproducer2··on WordPress on .NET
May I ask why?
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
Pivot to a NSFW platform. It already is but most people don't know that side of it. I'm pretty sure porn is the only reason tumblr's still breathing so it might work.
alistproducer2··on Google Goes Public with Unpatched Microsoft Edge and IE Vulnerability
To be fair to MS, a local bank switched their systems and introduced a vuln that leaves the username and password in the form as it opens the account in a new tab. It's still there 3 weeks later.

Edit: This is sarcasm but the bank story is true.

alistproducer2··on WordPress on .NET
We literally spend millions on licensing Share Point to do what WordPress can do much better and easier. I'm not saying we're going to start writing everything in PHP, but being able to experiment with WP could affect the bottom line in a big way.
alistproducer2··on WordPress on .NET
I work at a large company and we are starting to branch out into other languages. the problem is most of our infrastructure in .NET. Something like this would be really cool as it would allow us to utilize PHP while not asking too much of infrastructure team. I might put in an OSS approval request for this.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: What should I tell my cousin who wants to go to a “coding boot camp”?
Why not just apply to a master's program? She can probably get a dev job while enrolled. At least then she'll get a better signaling artifact than a boot camp certificate and probably spend less doing it.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: What is 1 thing that can take a Junior's career to the next level?
Co-signing this. Showing that you understand the business you're in and being able to propose and build solutions that best fit the business is a good way to get noticed.

Also don't deliver buggy code.

alistproducer2··on Two Indian engineers at Garmin in Kansas shot, one killed
Total silence about this in the msm. I wonder why?
alistproducer2··on Federal agents make domestic flight passengers show ID to disembark plane
This administration seems intent on creating problems within what have been relatively stable systems.
alistproducer2··on White House Indicates Potential Crackdown on Recreational Marijuana
This is just the political disaster anti-fascists need. The public will be overwhelmingly opposed to this and will wake a few people up.
alistproducer2··on Show HN: The Grid Vision – The Internet After the Web
I would like to up vote but your article didn't say what the grid actually is.
alistproducer2··on Why I Don’t Talk to Google Recruiters
one does not need to know how to write an algorithm on a white board to understand it. Seems like it would better to ask what a red-black tree is, what's it's time complexity, and what would be a good situation to use one.

In fact, I would argue that one could know how to write one and have no idea of the practical use of it.

alistproducer2··on Why I Don’t Talk to Google Recruiters
I agree with this post. I've turned down Google interviews twice precisely because I was immersed in personal projects and didn't want to spend the time needed to practice algorithm writing just for a test. I could understand if they ask you practical questions like "when and why would you use a trie?" that seems more appropriate than "write a trie on my whiteboard or you're not smart enough to work here." None of their engineers are writing trees by hand and in fact are actively encouraged not to "reinvent the wheel."
