alistproducer2··on Dialog 50¢ SoC Targets Disposable Bluetooth Market
Considering there's a finite punt of resources on this planet, disposable things really rub me the wrong way. I love the price point but the irresponsibility of marketing things like this as disposable irks me.
alistproducer2··on WeWork’s Implosion Shows How SoftBank Is Breaking the World
Also, Adam Neumann walks away with $1.2 billion for selling $1 for $0.50 while a third of the workforce gets pink slips. I mean, they were obviously way over-staffed so this day was coming no matter what but it just sucks to see Neumann walk away with untold amounts of power for the skill of lighting free money on fire.
alistproducer2··on Think young people are hostile to capitalism now? Wait for the next recession
What is your definition of a free market? I see this so often but few people seem to understand the inherent contradiction. If a market is truly free it will naturally tend toward monopoly thereby extinguishing itself. If it is regulated to prevent it's own destruction, it ceases to be truly free. In either case it is a transient condition. A brief glorious moment in time that cannot, by its own definition, be anything more than ephemeral.
alistproducer2··on The voice from our Nest camera threatened to steal our baby
Use the official desktop client for windows. The Linux version has to be run using wine, but there's a snap that makes the install a one-clicker. Use keepass2android for mobile.

Use a keyfile and password just in case your password is compromised, the attacker would still need access to your machine to open the dB.

alistproducer2··on The voice from our Nest camera threatened to steal our baby
Use keepass. It's an encrypted db with great mobile and desktop clients. Problem solved.
alistproducer2··on When Medical Debt Collectors Decide Who Gets Arrested
Im sorry to hear about your situation. I asked the question because I have a family member who was in a similar situation to you and rather than make prudent choices, he made decisions based on pride and not wanting hand outs. Years later if cost him dearly. Not saying this js you, but I know there are people who pay debts because it's. "the right thing to do" without realizing it may be the worst thing to do for them in their situation.
alistproducer2··on When Medical Debt Collectors Decide Who Gets Arrested
Can someone cc the Sanders or Warren campaign. This is ripe for national debate. Hard to imagine this isnt a good wedge issue.
alistproducer2··on When Medical Debt Collectors Decide Who Gets Arrested
Im confused as to why you don't just walk away. After 7 years it will fall off your credit report and u can start over.
alistproducer2··on Four kinds of documentation
I have to agree. Php is probably the easiest and moat productive languages I ever learned. The docs were great and the error messages always pointed me im the right direction very quickly. It's no surprise that the language caught on as it did. Ruby, by contrast seemed so hard to learn and I could never see what the advantage was over php so I never had the motivation to push past the difficulties of learning it.
alistproducer2··on I Survived the “Destroying Angel” (2006)
Unless im in a cow field and looking for a certain easily identifiable party mushroom, I leave the mushroom foraging to the experts.
alistproducer2··on A uBlock Origin update was rejected from the Chrome Web Store
Can we just say it? Reddit's redesigne has made it measurably less performant and harder to us. Nothing happens when u press a link for about half a second. They clearly switched to some kind of spa but I don't understand why.
alistproducer2··on A uBlock Origin update was rejected from the Chrome Web Store
I switched (back) to firefox after the quantum update and havent looked back. I haven't used chrome in years so im not able to compare performance but I've had nice issues in that department with ff. I use brave for mobile.
alistproducer2··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I should've been more clear. I don't host the clients; rather, I host the databases. That's why I prefer keepass - it's just an encrypted db which is lightweight and the clients tend to be lightweight as well.
alistproducer2··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
Given the requirements of self hosting, ill just stick with keepass. The desktop and mobile clients are great and I can host them on my nextcloud and grab them over WebDAV.
alistproducer2··on Tesla Delivers Record 97,000 Vehicles in Q3
Good old zerohedge never misses an opportunity to shit on Tesla [0]. Question for Tesla owners: how is the reliability? I'd love to get unto an electric if only to never have to change my oil again but im curious as to what kind of maintenance requirements these cars have.

alistproducer2··on Iraq blocks Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram, shuts down internet
Not to be too cute but by relying on corporations you're trading one dictatorship for another. Im not saying an oppressive government is the same as Comcast. Im just making the point that neither entity is accountabile to the people they 'serve.'
alistproducer2··on 51% of young voters believe humanity could be wiped out within 15 years
But here's the thing: the reality of current power in western countries is that it has been completely captured by large corporations and capital. Anything that causes disruption to the flow if money and growth will not be considered. Any real action will only come as a result of revolution. Revolutions are never fought with middle of the road ideologies as the catalyst and they aren't fought by populations as comfortable as those of successful western societies.

However you're kidding yourself if you the primary danger if climate change is the climate itself, at least to western societies. Look no further than the most existential threat to thd EU posed by a mere million migrants. Fascism js suddenly back in fashion all over the continent and the Brits want to self immolate and leave the EU. The failing of major crops due to seasons becoming unstable has already happened and will only accelerate in the coming years. The American corn crop was dangerojsly close to failing this year. Are these young people being hyperbolic in believing extinction is right around the corner? A bit, but their sentiment is correct. The civilization that they are accustomed to could very well be completely distroyed or in a state of disintegration in 15 years.

alistproducer2··on Anxious tech workers are going to therapy
>What got me off Facebook (>3y ago, not a passing whim) was the realisation that I found no value in keeping in touch with people I was only 'in touch with' via Facebook.

This. If you're only interested in keeping in touch with people as long as it takes zero effort on your part that means that you don't really want to stay in touch with said person. Once I realized that, being done with social media was easy. I run a nextcloud instance that allows me to share photos and large files with family, and anyone for that matter.

alistproducer2··on Best Smartphones That Still Have a Headphone Jack
Sorry but this list is trash. Every smartphone on that list was overpriced and runs some horrid vendor customized version of Android that's sure to become obsolete because the vendors will stop updating it with a year or two. the one that was around $200 (Motorola) had specs way worse than the phone I'm using (Nokia 2.2) to type this message, which is $70 cheaper than the Motorola and has a headphone jack btw.
alistproducer2··on Why Is the Amazon Rain Forest Disappearing?
Where in the article does it link the confession to the trial in question? I read it and don't see a connection.
alistproducer2··on Why Is the Amazon Rain Forest Disappearing?
I find it hard to take news outlets seriously on this subject when they keep the kid gloves on concerning the current president of Brazil. The reticence to call his "victory" what it really was: a coup. The intercept [0] laid out the fact that his opponent, who was slated to win in a landslide, was jailed and convicted by a judge who was working in concert with the prosecutor to ensure a conviction. If the aim was to do real journalism and speak truth to power, then outlets would call if like it is and convey zero legitimacy to the current administration.

alistproducer2··on Khashoggi children have received houses in Saudi Arabia and monthly payments
You're not wrong in that both things can be true at the same time.

I think the wording that more accurately describes my thoughts would be "... legitimately surprised."

alistproducer2··on Khashoggi children have received houses in Saudi Arabia and monthly payments
"point to one incident" so I pointed out two things and clearly allude that if one does the research, you'll find many more than two things (Iranian revolution is an easy one).

"telling people to hate a country" the word hate never appears once in my comment. Again, you seem to be "responding" to some generalization of a viewpoint you don't like instead of what is actually on your screen. No disrespect but I don't really see any reason to continue to respond to you when you are making no effort to respond to what I'm actually writing.

alistproducer2··on Khashoggi children have received houses in Saudi Arabia and monthly payments
What part of instigated coups on behalf of a fruit company and illegally killing people I'm Venezuela is unclear? Cause I literally typed those things in my parent comment. Those seem to me to be valid reasons for having issues with a government. It's ironic that a comment trying to persuade others to "get creative" is the comment that seems suspiciously like copypasta.
alistproducer2··on Khashoggi children have received houses in Saudi Arabia and monthly payments
In order to be legitimately upset with our government having"shitty allies", you first need to believe in the fiction that our government isn't shitty itself. A quick browse through history should relieve of such a fantasy. In fact you don't need to look at history. The policy of illegal sanctions begun under the last administration, and now the illegal blockade of Venezuela (which is resulting in the deaths of many civilians) should have you nice and clear-eyed about your government.

Once you understand that our government's primary function is to protect and expand markets for the capital class, you cease to be surprised or confused by it's actions. Google the coup instigated in behalf of United fruit. That was over 100 years ago, so none of this is new. Stop reading the New York times or any other mainstream publication for foreign policy opinion or news. Try alternative sites like greyzoneproject or truthdig if you want decent news.

alistproducer2··on WeWork Bonds Drop Below Par for First Time Since IPO Filing
I think it's important to not gloss over what the markets are looking for in companies they want to grow as fast as possible: monopoly.

IMO, the shift to "show me profits" could be as much about the growing societal and regulatory backlash to monopolistic tech, which, if materialized, drastically reduces the probability of achieving or maintaining monopoly.

alistproducer2··on Troubles Mount for the We Company as Softbank Reportedly Calls for Shelving IPO
I've been reading zerohedge since 2008. I've not really liked the turn it took around 2015-2016 but it seems to have come back around and become a bit more balanced than it was in those early days of flirting with being a full on MAGA blog. It's, IMO, the best financial blog out there.
alistproducer2··on Swedish scientist advocates eating humans to combat climate change
I put stuff like this up there with the "debate" over plastic straw bans: just fodder for industries to use in muddying the waters until the last minute.

With climate change, it's clear we're past the point of no return, but we would still do well to ignore stuff like this which is self-indulgently provocative to no end. Just because disaster is baked in doesn't mean stuff like this needs to be pumped up - allowing for further procrastination and denial, when we could be trying to prepare for the fallout.

alistproducer2··on CDC says stop vaping as mystery lung condition spreads
This was bound to happen. For the life of me, I cannot understand how things have gone this long without even a whiff of regulation. This is what you're going to get when u let a market be the wild west for a decade.
alistproducer2··on Ask HN: Why do we allow Google's abuse?
I've cut Google out in all areas except where the product is, IMO, best-in-class: search, Android, YouTube, and g-board. I think most people believe they don't have anything to hide, which is why, even when confronted with the extent of information Google and others have on them, they shrug their shoulders.
