alightsoul··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
In only a few countries in LATAM and Europe, in LATAM they are only present largely for sales but no development. I would guess the same is the case in Europe
alightsoul··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
What if the bribes are still cheaper than paying a US citizen? It would still be cheaper than hiring a Us citizen I think
alightsoul··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
I entirely agree. They are looking at many countries like those in Latin America, to hire cheaper labor there either vis local subsidiaries or local outsourcing/consulting firms
alightsoul··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Not weird, just cheaper labor.
alightsoul··on Visa, Mastercard, major banks facing new litigation over 'anticompetitive' fees
How is it impossible to use? Apparently everyone in India is using it? Apparently only tourists face issues with it?

With visa and Mastercard you pay transaction fees and rent for a card terminal aka card reader, which are lower or non existent with these homegrown or local P2P payment systems. Outside western developed countries aka the US and the richest European countries like France, Germany, that's enough to stop using visa and Mastercard.

alightsoul··on Visa, Mastercard, major banks facing new litigation over 'anticompetitive' fees
It's not different, many countries already have their own version of it, you just don't hear about them. India's UPI has more users but you don't hear about it.

Maybe we hear about it because, it's right in the US' backyard and the biggest country there is Brazil from which pix comes from. All these payment systems threaten visa and Mastercard but pix is the largest in the US' backyard because the country it comes from, Brazil, is the largest there.

And it's also government run, dun dun dun. The us hates anything that is government run. That's why they hate china and communists and socialism so much.

alightsoul··on Tell HN: GitHub refuses to remove cracked copies of my software after a month
How is this enforceable with llms if they train on generalist material, which is already the case?

I don't think it's enforceable or even applicable here. "The 3rd Circuit distinguished Thomson Reuters' case from other AI training cases. Unlike the technology in those cases, Ross' search engine did not feature generative AI — AI that creates new content "

this comment is misleading.

alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
Which clone? Photon? It's not open source, why are creative apps often not open source, unlike other kinds of apps?
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
The author has said this is very early stage and from what I can see this has only existed for a week
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
I haven't had a chance to use it, how are you lost?
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
Affinity is not open source so there's that. There should be an OSS Photoshop drop in alternative like affinity tries to be
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
Those dated workflows are what people seem to want, they say any creative app that doesn't behave like adobe is not worth considering
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
LibreOffice could see some UI and compatibility work, the compatibility work is mostly done
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
Huh? If ai can ingest books and that is judged as fair use, why is it not the same for code?
alightsoul··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
I am sure adobe has known about this, so they pivoted to web aka cloud Saas for businesses a few years ago
alightsoul··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
Oh this wouldn't work in many countries like those in the global south. Everything would just go into the garbage bin because it's less of an inconvenience. It's best to force people into rigid unambiguous categories like plastic, paper, food etc. Without giving them an ambiguous option like recyclables, like no one knows what is recyclable.
alightsoul··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Because of NDAs
alightsoul··on On social reality in China
Maybe it's country dependent. I have seen what you describe in countries where christianity is the dominant religion and most people in those countries something like 70 to 80 percent identify with it. And religion in those places is most prevalent among the poor, so much so there is a direct relationship between poverty and religion, the more religious, the poorer.
alightsoul··on Researchers can reconstruct what you're looking at from a brain scan
Yet another double edged sword like LLMs. It would make a great brain computer interface and would let you communicate telepathically, and also be used by people who don't trust you like toxic workplaces and court proceedings

Yes I know this is not exactly the subject of the article but brain scanning which is how this was done could be used for those things too.

alightsoul··on Clef: Open-weight decision models, and new RL fine-tuning platform
Yeah that's a decision tree, random Forest or some other machine learning classifier. They have existed for a long time
alightsoul··on Context Language Models
Yeah maybe a second model can do the actual management
alightsoul··on Context Language Models
Maybe have A second model do the management?
alightsoul··on OpenDLSS: A Vulkan Reimplementation of Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Network
Please please please publish those things somewhere, so that no one has to reinvent the wheel even with an llm
alightsoul··on Gemini 4 Argon
That is not normal. Were you able to use the arch wiki? Omarchy is a version of arch Linux. Omarchy should direct users to the arch wiki for any issues they face
alightsoul··on Gemini 4 Argon
Please tell me you published your findings even as an issue on the llama.cpp GitHub
alightsoul··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
Yeah, but I think they just sell convenience and there are projects on GitHub like openbb that piece together something very similar for much less.
alightsoul··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
It used to be built with qt, now I'm guessing the answer is vanilla JS and CSS. You'd be surprised how fast they are without frameworks like react
alightsoul··on NRC issues first U.S. construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor
The reactor vessel is technically always factory made, and the containment building (pit?) structures are built as separate prefabricated modules that are just lowered into the containment building, like a prefabricated building is assembled on site
alightsoul··on America.gov
Yeah, same thing happens when you ask a Chinese model what happened at Tiananmen square
alightsoul··on PSSA: A non-transformer language model written from scratch in Rust
Apparently op cares a lot about speed, which is fine, but ML researchers care about correctness first, speed second. And it makes sense, because they are not as resource constrained as OP.
