alibosworth··on Show HN: Set, offline Markdown note-taking app with device-to-device sync
"The desktop app syncs your notes between your devices. There's no server and no account, so your notes are never stored anywhere but on your devices."

Can you tell me more about this? Cross device sync without an account is not intuitive to me. I'm about to download it to try it out, but I think it might be useful to update the docs to help people understand how that might work!

alibosworth··on A lost X-Files song
I haven’t used it for years, but EAC was the gold standard for ripping. This thread mentions a few other options as well:

Interestingly... on looking closer at the "restored" version, he is now sipping his tea with his right hand, as are his daughters, but he is smoking with his left hand.

That's just a quote from the youtube description. My take is that it is a fancy way of saying that they corrected it to match reality.
alibosworth··on The Dial Toner – color dial hex code keypad
This idea is similar to how some MIDI controllers work where the state is indicated by an array of lights around the knob, and the knob is an encoder which rotates endlessly. A popular and cheap example https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=P0B3M

This makes it possible, for instance, to map knobs to adjustment controls in Lightroom and have the knob "change" instantly as you move between photos that have different adjustments applied.

alibosworth··on Vuescan – Software support for 6500 abandoned scanners
The 5400 is a really great scanner. Vuescan is a bit odd to get used to but it opens so much control and the possibility to scan color negatives using the “advanced workflow” where you lock the orange mask film base compensation values across a roll (or a batch of rolls). I much prefer to use Vuescan over the original software which assesses every exposure on its own and doesn’t let you control very much.

Vuescan also supports creating and using custom input profiles if you have an IT8 target as either a slide or a reflective object that you photograph (documentation claims that this won’t work but I found it to be an improvement - essentially profiling the combo of the unique characteristics of the sensor and a certain film type and some variability from lab conditions)

The hardware on the 5400 is about as good as it gets for scanning 35mm unless you get into Imacon territory. Doing comparisons between the 5400 and an Imacon 848, I’ve never been very convinced the 5400 is missing out on much. The one weak spot with the 5400 in my opinion is the film holder’s inability to perfectly keep a curly negative flat at the ends of the strip, a problem that the Imacon gracefully and completely solves with its curved film path. On the 5400 back-rolling stubborn negatives before scanning at full resolution usually does the trick.

Vuescan will also let you save raw versions with an optional separate layer for the IR channel which can be used to handle motivation. I like the idea of capturing as much data as possible with the ability to process as you wish later.

Ed Hamrick has always been responsive and helpful if I have contacted him about something. A few years ago I realized I had been using Vuescan happily and consistently for 15 years for only a single payment of less than $100 and bought a second for the heck of it.

I have some old notes about then 5400 posted here http://alibosworth.com/technical/#scanning

alibosworth··on OneBag: The Art and Science of Travelling Light
An entertaining (if not extreme) take on this general topic is the “Vagrant Holiday” series of videos.

I appreciate his dedication to ultra minimalist travelling without any of the hype that is usually involved. Nothing about expensive gear, just actually not needing much.

Middleman will probably do most of what you want although not exactly how you describe: http://middlemanapp.com/
alibosworth··on Square Register
It seems trivial to connect the reader via a TRRS [1] extension cable

Any cable that maintains mic capability with stock Apple headphones should be fine.

alibosworth··on Sparrow - The New Mail for Mac
BEWARE: it appears as though it was auto sending (and then deleting) my replies every time it autosaved.

I see this http://cl.ly/2g4u at the bottom of the thread in gmail. If I check my trash in gmail I see multiple versions of my reply in various states, all with a sent time (they don't appear in the sent folder).

At worst it is sending out your email continually as you type it, at best its autosaving feature clutters up your gmail trash with every autosave.

Anyone else see this behaviour?

This is an excellent point, we will fix this.
alibosworth··on We just launched a new invoicing web app for under 10K. Check it out: Ballpark
For the record, this was going to be the title but it didn't fit:

"The small company I work with, Metalab, has just launched a new estimating and invoicing web app for under 10k with no VC. It's called Ballpark, check it out."

Thanks for the comments on the design, all of the credit for that goes to the main Metalab guy, Andrew Wilkinson, see more here http://www.metalabdesign.com

alibosworth··on View your page in multiple versions of IE side-by-side
this is not really the same thing, but it can help: "Install multiple versions of IE on your PC" http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE

It hasn't been updated in a while, I really only use it to be able to run IE6 alongside IE7 (which i have installed in the normal way) for testing purposes.

Kind of neat. Heres an image of the solution, for anyone who doesn't want to try it themselves. http://i43.tinypic.com/mjmi47.jpg the name of the .wav gives it away, and I visualized it using one of foobar2000's default visualizations. A more advanced tool would probably give you a better resulting image. Reminds me of aphex twin putting things in his tracks (http://www.bastwood.com/aphex.php)
