ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Well based on how I spend my weekends where I'm fully recharged and energetic to get shit done, I assume it's the lack physical energy. Cause when I have the energy and mental power I do the things that I want to do.

One difference is that if I actually had a real deadline I would deliver no matter how tired/exhausted I am, but I'm not sure that's sustainable.

Thank you for your suggestions. Yeah, as soon as our offices were open I started going in. I'm a huge fan of having that separation, getting out of my apartment, and in general seeing other people in the office. Not deliberately planning your time is a great idea.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
That's a good suggestion, I'm gonna take a shower and force myself to just lay on the couch or bed without any devices.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
In the US coffee shops close around 5-6 PM ish. Also do you get a good night sleep drinking coffee that late in the evenings?
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Good point, I do try to eat a carb heavy meal the night before my workout days to have the glycogen stored in my muscles.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
I'm actually going for my yearly physical and will ask for a blood work. I typically do that once every two years but doesn't hurt to check them again.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Thank you for that, I actually do most of those things and they have been helpful.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
A couple of years ago I switched my workout routine to the first thing in the morning. While I don't like to be tired from that during the day, it's the only thing that has worked for me.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Do you think the workouts have a positive effect on your sleep quality?
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Yeah, I broke my wrist as a kid rollerblading. I do think cycling is a much better activity in terms of minimizing injuries while building cardio.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Yeah, I've limited my caffeine consumption to only in the morning. I really envy friends who have the same type of demanding jobs and still have energy left for other things. They're probably genetically blissed and have more stamina.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Amen. I'm in my late 20s and I feel that. In college I used to be a bulldozer, and now I really feel the consequences of not eating healthy, sleeping well, drinking too much, etc right away. Have you found anything to make your sleep more restorative? It seems like as we age getting a good night sleep becomes harder.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Same, I did switch my workouts to early in the morning. Not ideal since I'm kinda tired all day but that's the only time that I have the energy to workout.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
I'm just too mentally tired to even do that
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
That's nice, unfortunately not an option for me.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
Honestly I didn't think showering to be so effective. Question for you, do you also shower in the morning? and if so do you shampoo/body wash in the evening? I already take a shower in the morning and kinda have dry skin, so I don't typically wash myself in the evening and just enjoy the water time.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: What do you do to recharge after a day of work?
This is not a bad idea, but instead of mindless spending time online I should find a relaxing activity

ali92hm··on Ask HN: Do you also alternate between super productive and slow days?
Hey sorry I just looked back at this thread and I think you took your email off of your profile. You can email me at my username @gmail.com

So this is one thing I'm trying to tease out. Do I feel motivated because I'm well rested and have energy? Or is it the motivation that causes the energy?

From this morning I can say it's the former. I do feel super excited to work on my stuff, but just cant get myself to do them or start. Getting out of the bed this morning was tough

ali92hm··on Ask HN: Do you also alternate between super productive and slow days?
Yeah I've kinda come to the same conclusion. Seeing how I can get done in one day if I'm well rested.
ali92hm··on Ask HN: Do you also alternate between super productive and slow days?
Yeah, I've been meaning to instrument my time to see how it's being spent on a more granular level. I do keep logs and notes from my daily work and tasks currently though. So I know when I started on what and when it was finished.

But to answer your question, I don't think it's just the feeling of finishing a task. Yesterday, I woke up and felt well rested. I stretched, made breakfast and had some introspection time, started grabbing tasks one at a time from my side project and finishing them. Then I picked up a book that I've been reading and read for 2 hours and I also finished some random chores.

This morning, I woke up and I cant get out of the bed (this is not just Monday effect, I've felted on other days). I don't know if this exhaustion is because of being too excited last night from all I've done and not being able to have a good night sleep, or just I've exhausted myself yesterday and don't feel like doing anything today. Or I would have felt this way anyways.

I do think though the ground work is done on the less productive days in terms of restoration. My girlfriend got a dog about 10 months ago, and I can see the same behavior in the dog. She runs around and exhausts herself on a hike one day and then just sunbathes and chills the next day. It seems like our hunter gatherer ancestors behaved the same way.

ali92hm··on Ask HN: Do you also alternate between super productive and slow days?
Right, so I think I should just take advantage of those days and rest or do low intensity work on other days. Kinda like strength training
ali92hm··on Big gap between Pfizer, Moderna vaccines for preventing Covid hospitalizations
I got the J&J back in early April which was all I could get my hands on back then(no side effects aside from a sore arm). After seeing its efficacy (specially against the delta variant) I went and got a Pfizer shot in early July which hit me like a truck. Since I was already "fully vaccinated" I delayed the second dose of my Pfizer shot till now (~10 weeks) to maximize the induced immunity. I gotta say the second dose of Pfizer only give me mild side effects for half a day.
ali92hm··on The Matrix Resurrections – Official Trailer
I had the same feeling when I was watching the trailer. I'm hoping the story is interesting and continues to fill in some of the open questions of the trilogy. I have a feeling that I will be disappointed though!

ali92hm··on I’m Not Scared to Reenter Society. I’m Just Not Sure I Want To
Add people with allergies to that list as well. I've realized how much my allergies are better in the spring (both last year and this year) as a result of wearing a mask when I'm outside.
ali92hm··on The Typical Unicorn Founder Started Their Business at 34
I think the narrative of the young dropout founder is just more palatable and headline worthy. That's why people believe or want to believe that and eat those type of stories. Twenty year olds think that they can build the next FB from their dorm room. Not to say that's impossible and they shouldn't try. I got invaluable experience from doing those things in college, but I'm glad I didn't drop out or continued to work on those projects full time after graduation.
ali92hm··on How to Start a Starup
> Google understands a few other things most Web companies still don't. The most important is that you should put users before advertisers, even though the advertisers are paying and users aren't. One of my favorite bumper stickers reads "if the people lead, the leaders will follow." Paraphrased for the Web, this becomes "get all the users, and the advertisers will follow." More generally, design your product to please users first, and then think about how to make money from it. If you don't put users first, you leave a gap for competitors who do.

That aged well! Reading these timeless stuff many years after their original writing shows you how the disruptors are starting to become the disruptee.

ali92hm··on An Uncommon Cold
I'm glad that covid has made wearing masks acceptable. Now if I feel a little sick or suspect that I may be coming down with a cold I will wear a mask in public without people thinking that I have the plague. I think others will do the same which should reduce the rate of common cold in the winter months.
