The difference to older tech like mechanical slot machines is that the game records everything the player does, and can then drop a "discounted" special offer at the right time to maximize the likelihood of keeping the player hooked.
The thing with PARA is that information falls into different buckets according to their use, not their topic. You're in a completely different mindset when you're looking up old stuff for reference (archives), remembering that bash command you use once a month (resources), etc.
On a first impression / hunch, your decimal system seems to have the failure mode that your old finances live right next to your current finances. Thus, the size of your context / working window just grows and grows without bounds, becoming unwieldy over time. With PARA, the idea is that a project folder contains data if and only if you need it to work on that project.
A very low-cost way of trying it out is to just implement the 2nd A (archives). That's by far the most important.
There's a reason they're reusable: these are quite sturdy boxes built out of high quality materials (steel frame, corrugated steel walls, thick hardwood floors), otherwise you couldn't stack them 10 high with 28 tons of goods in each of them.
>>> a = [1,2,3]
>>> b = [4,5,6]
>>> id(a), id(b)

However, you're wrong about ship size being a problem. A suez canal pilot is guaranteed to be very familiar with container ships of the suezmax size, specially considering that to become a pilot, you have to have been a captain yourself.
Nobody actually claims that, specially not economists. In fact, economics study exactly how and when markets don't produce the most favorable outcome.
The captain is also the one responsible for upholding the laws of whatever flag the vessel flies under.
It reminds me of Newton fractals, which basically compute a color for each pixel that depends on the sequence of points visited by the newton root finding algorithm.
This is basically the same thing: tracing the orbit of a function that's very chaotic but has enough local coherence to get a smooth image.
But I can also tell you that you eventually get used to it, and it just becomes a part of life. Feel free to drop me a line if you want to talk about it sometime (my username over at the big email provider with a G)
In Europe (or at least in my country), health authorities have been saying for several weeks that we need to stop people from needing ventilators, rather than get more ventilators. I think most people here get it, and overall the population has been compliant even with the quite drastic measures that have been taken in most places.
