algobro··on DOJ filed paperwork to US District Court to force Google to spin off Chrome [pdf]
Weird that a Biden DOJ would do this.

Here's a bet: they are offloading a legal liability. Within 12 months someone reverse engineers the binaries and show that they were siphoning out all keystroke data, or it has an official remote backdoor or something equally horrendous.

algobro··on WebSockets cost us $1M on our AWS bill
Good flex. These days access to capital is attractive for talent.
algobro··on Ask HN: Solopreneurs, how did you come up with your idea?
You guys don’t have a text file full of world changing ideas you would work on if you had some runway?
algobro··on Ask HN: What is one software product that boosted your productivity?
Not yet sorry but maybe in due time. It’s probably half a day of python dev work to reproduce. Maybe more to nail down the analytics and charting.

One day.

algobro··on Ask HN: What is one software product that boosted your productivity?
Custom tooling I wrote:

1. Focus session time tracker with talking clock counting down every n minutes.

2. Activity monitor and alerter. Tracks active window and title every minute and alerts if more than n minutes outside whitelisted websites. Alert immediately if blacklisted website (dns blocking is painful. Sometimes you want to access it for a few minutes).

A bunch of more things but those are the two most effective ones.

algobro··on Ask HN: Former gifted children with hard lives, how did you turn out?
In a logical world, affirmitive action efforts would be redirected to people with ACE score >= 4, regardless of ethnicity or race.
algobro··on Antibiotics damage the colonic mucus barrier in a microbiota-independent manner
Annual vaccines are much more convenient and are preferable to one-off treatments like antibiotics, (which reduce the nations GDP as well because of they "cure" the problem cheaply), and have proven to be safe.

I call for an immediate ban on antibiotics. Only high ranking members of society should have access. And people with good social credit scores.

algobro··on Asynchronous IO: the next billion-dollar mistake?
The 1990s called. They want their threads vs events debates back.

Todays processors are fast enough to serve many useful workloads with a single core. The benefit of the async abstraction outweighs the performance benefit in the majority of the cases.

And debugging multithreaded code is way harder than async code, mainly if its the kind of program that needs stepping into.

algobro··on Bullets for sale in some US grocery stores with ammo vending machines
The military aged illegal immigrants have photo id. Let that sink in.
algobro··on Ask HN: My manager is bad. Should I care?
Welcome to the real world. It’s like this at many places. You have to assume that the director and manager go on family picnics together. At these places you get promoted to manager because the guy above you trusts you and for that reason only. Talent can be hired, trust cannot.

Either learn to adapt or leave and join a firm with top tier culture. Do your homework on that.

algobro··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
Good catch, fixed.
algobro··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
Sir if you live in USA and do not take a dip into the VC money swimming pool, you are stupid, because crazy people with stupid ideas routinely get to $100 Million valuations, like no other place on earth.

Its like going to Disney Land and saying "Oh i'll just sit at the coffee shop". Some people are here for the ride. Some people like the 9 to 5. Like you, obviously. Why dont you go start corporate-drone-news.org, this board is for hackers and founders.

algobro··on Ask HN: How to manage autistic developer?
Avoid verbal communication. Use email always. This gives them time to regulate their response and something to look back and be embarassed about when they are in better shape mentally.

If you have to communicate verbally, any topic can become contentious. When that happens, say something positive and revisit it later.

When a toddler hits you the best way to react is vocal and exaggerated hurt. Same principle. They will have extraordinary empathy if they see it that way.

Ask them how they are doing often and offer to help. Be on their team.

Praise often.

algobro··on Ask HN: Is anyone else bearish on OpenAI?
Can you elaborate on "where it's really hard not to get your salary seized."? How and why?
algobro··on Bing Chat is so hungry for GPUs, Microsoft will rent them from Oracle
The OpenAI dev day product manager had a slide with her calendar. Two slots were marked up in red "Find GPUs" . Sending a message there.
algobro··on Marijuana use linked with increased risk of heart attack, heart failure
This is not covering up the issue of vaccine-caused myocarditis, before anyone starts on that.
algobro··on Gaza experienced its third total communications blackout
Hacker news can't figure out world peace? Propose a practical set of steps to ensure this never happens again (both sides).
algobro··on Turmeric can kill cancer cells and prevent their growth

algobro··on Ask HN: Seeking Advice – Relocating to Canada as a Software Engineer
most of south america and the islands like Belize. some have very low tax rates.
algobro··on Ask HN: Seeking Advice – Relocating to Canada as a Software Engineer
Why not go to a place with some sun and beaches and cheap rent and no carbon tax and work remote.
algobro··on Ask HN: Has anyone (un)successfully staged an intervention?
Coursera has a Hopkins institute course called "Psychological First Aid" which is "aimed at first responders to provide a supportive presence, mitigate acute distress, and assess the need for further mental health care". Useful for dealing with when people are breaking down or having a mental health episode of some kind. More importantly it teaches you what _not_ to say, with nice role played examples.

Is this person on heated tobacco or vapes? I have seen people destroy their mental health with these things because they overload on nicotine without realizing it.
