alexrsagen··on Bugs Apple loves
Here's a fun one. Apple Music stops playing (lossless) tracks after 15 seconds.

You'll know it's going to happen before it happens as well, if the lossless icon doesn't appear within 1-2 seconds after playing a track.

I promise I'm not crazy, it's not just me. Just search for "15 seconds" in Apple Community: https://discussions.apple.com/search?q=15+seconds

I'm sure this is likely already fixed in the latest version of iOS and macOS, but I use Apple Music for Windows: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pfhdd62mxs1

I switched from Spotify to Apple Music mainly for lossless audio. The Apple One Family subscription helped sell it. However, now I can't play non-downloaded tracks without waiting 5-30 minutes for the music to start playing.

alexrsagen··on Reading NFC Passport Chips in Linux
I've written some Rust code to do the same thing. Mainly to get a copy of the photo stored on my passport, and because I was curious about how eMRTDs worked. I enjoyed reading through the ICAO 9303 specs, they were very detailed.

It most definitely is:

- in the bottom of the logo

- when you click "About the ICO" (breadcrumb or footer link)

alexrsagen··on Attention VeraCrypt version 1.26.1 is not safe
I agree with wendig0x here. Specifically, I find the following quite suspicious:

1. One of the PR submitters have two[1][2] GitHub users, both used in commits in the PR.

2. The PR is made up of commits from 3 different GitHub users[1][2][3].

3. The PR contains many changes and does not describe them well enough

4. It does not seem that any meaningful amount of code review by maintainers went into the PR

Floatplane? Linus and Luke at Linus Tech Tips (some of the people behind the service) always say it was made for creators.
alexrsagen··on Show HN: DontBeEvil.rip: Search, for developers (API, expressions, CLI)
This function should work for you:

$ rip() { curl -G -H "Accept: text/plain" --url https://dontbeevil.rip/search --data-urlencode "q=$*"; }

$ rip Heartbleed bug

edit: alangibson's solution in this thread is better :)

alexrsagen··on Show HN: 100 LOC Ruby forward proxy using only standard libraries
I made a similar proxy using Go in 2019: https://github.com/alexrsagen/alexproxy

It's got a couple more features than OP, check out the README.

alexrsagen··on Pi-Hole: Why You Need a Network-Wide Ad-Blocker
The page is very self-contradicting...

It says in verbatim "However, I do have a problem with: Pop-up and pop-under ads that hi-jack my internet browsing experience".

However, the site itself has a "subscribe" overlay that has to be removed with developer tools or manually blocked if uBlock Origin is enabled with annoyances filters.
