alexhjones··on Deepseek R1 Distill 8B Q40 on 4 x Raspberry Pi 5
Never heard that claim before, only that a certain subset of re-enforced learning may have used ChatGPT to grade responses. Is there more detail about it being allegedly a distilled OpenAI model?
alexhjones··on Introducing Operator
This seems more like a catch-up to other similar tools - still cool though. The half a trillion is openai agreeing to raise funds and contribute to the half trillion, not them getting it all.
alexhjones··on How a four-day workweek works, from the companies pulling it off
Same here - love my Tuesdays off and going for long bike rides before collecting the kids from school to play. Costco never seems to have quiet times near me any more though! I get the Friday Feeling on a Monday afternoon, get the out of office ready and switch off mentally. Every Public holiday that falls on a Monday gives an automatic 4 day weekend. I try to avoid squeezing in too many odd-jobs like a weekly food shop. Like you, I would also only look for a new job that could be flexible on 4 days.
alexhjones··on Google warns its own employees: Do not use code generated by Bard
The equivalent would be GitHub’s policy on employees using Bing for code generation, not copilot.
alexhjones··on Google warns its own employees: Do not use code generated by Bard
This isn’t referring to Google’s code generation tool DuetAI / Codey though, it is referring to their general chatbot which is not marketed as a code generation tool. If they issued this for DuetAI it would be a bigger deal.

alexhjones··on LastPass user vaults stolen in recent hack
I might be misunderstanding, but if the url was adobe.com, then it would be possible to find the corresponding password from that adobe breach for the same email address (not trivial, but if someone moves in the right circles I assume they could get a whole host of the big breaches in a searchable format).

A subset of users might have reused the breached password(s) for their lastpass master password.

Not sure if you could also feed the breached passwords into the brute force tool to give it a headstart, in case they did a slight variation on a breached password for the lastpass master password.

alexhjones··on LastPass user vaults stolen in recent hack
No need to brute force - if users re-used their master password, it will potentially cross-reference with the correct email and password combo from any number of previous data breaches and pwnage across the net.
alexhjones··on Amazon shipped fake product, refuses refund until 'correct' item returned
A few months back I ordered an Xbox Series X from Amazon but a large box arrived with nothing but some plastic picnic forks in it. Luckily I managed to get the driver to pose for a selfie with the box showing there was no Xbox. In this case I think they had sold out and decided to ship "something" instead of cancel the order as they didn't even ask for photo proof that the box was empty.
alexhjones··on The Matrix Awakens: Unreal Engine 5 Techdemo [video]
I think until it has the Xbox/PS5 logo at the bottom it looks filmed as an intro to the actual demo.

Excellent! Thanks
alexhjones··on Show HN: the iPhone version of News/YC, a Hacker News reader
Does it allow for collapsing comment threads?

Edit: Just installed it and it's very nice, but a great feature to add would be... collapsible comments :-) Please?

alexhjones··on Salary Negotiations: What is Possible When There's no More Money
This made me sad :-( I was dissapointed with my recent pay rise (+3%, 18months after the last rise). Maybe I didn't negotiate well but I was open and honest. I don't care if I'm paid more than my peers, or that there's no more money in the pot, it's still a shitty deal with no sweeteners. I guess that is what you get for being someone else's employee.

alexhjones··on Ask HN: Decent HN iOS app that allows collapsing of comment threads?
Thanks. I like the way the 'Alien Blue' iPhone app does it but it doesn't seem like there's a HN app which does the same.

This is probably the way things are going but I find the current screen-lock eye watching feature creepy. Maybe it was the eyes icon popping up on the screen...
