I am as impressed as I am horrified.

Shh.
alexdunmow··on Amazon employees are 'rage applying' for new jobs after RTO mandate
I just don't buy this. It might be why the media is pushing an "end work from home" narrative but I don't believe the majority of execs are making the decision due to this reason. I think WFH just exposes that without the ability to physically harass and micro-manage people they don't provide much day to day value.

alexdunmow··on Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Mistake
It's the same in Australia. I've seen little kids who are into a particular sport parrot off the odds for the game. It's crazy.

alexdunmow··on Amon Tobin – Foley Room site (2007)
I've got no sound either. :(

Works in Firefox though.

alexdunmow··on Google search is losing the fight with SEO spam, study says
I don't disagree with you. But I've been slashing all of my subscriptions. At least to test whether I truly need said product. For instance I cancelled Intellij and used VS Code for 1.5 months. Went back after proving it was worth the sub.

It's hard to justify adding a new subscription when I'm getting by just fine without it.

alexdunmow··on Google search is losing the fight with SEO spam, study says
I have definitely noticed that the search results are often old now. I constantly have to set "past year". Something that was otherwise rare not even a year or two ago.

I would like to pay for Kagi. But with this economy I'm belt tightening and adding another subscription seems crazy. Even if the experience is 100x better than Google's.

alexdunmow··on A Theory of Grift
I think this is almost a "not even wrong"* situation.

alexdunmow··on Why Prince Changed His Name to an Symbol 30 Years Ago, and What Happened Next
I often wonder how many artists ended up making explicit music simply to get that sticker. There's no doubt that it became a marketing ploy for artists. As an edgy teenager I was put off by albums that didn't have said sticker. What a time to be alive.

alexdunmow··on Show HN: Deploying subdomain-based routing like github.io
This would be pretty easy in Go, too.
alexdunmow··on Play deprivation is a major cause of the teen mental health crisis
The low-key judgement you get from people and especially other parents for not putting your children into day orphanage as soon as they're born is absolutely bizarre! People act like like your kids are going to grow up antisocial psychopaths because they're not surrounded by 15 other sad abandoned kids every day.

Much to the chagrin of people named Alexa, Siri and the handful of people named Bixby.
alexdunmow··on GPT-4 is getting worse over time, not better
Name a single subscription service that never changes over time? If your product is based on another company's service then you are beholden to them.
alexdunmow··on Apple plans a slow, appointment-only rollout of Vision Pro
I only have normal subpar vision but I too have never been able to walk out of an optometry appointment with a pair of glasses. That's a thing? Optometrists keep prescription lens stock on hand?
alexdunmow··on Show HN: CodePerfect, a fast, lightweight IDE for Go
IntelliJ has this too.
alexdunmow··on Why Britain doesn’t build
We even have preferential voting. The problem is nearly two-thirds of MPs - out of 144 of them - own more than one property. Which is more than three times the national average: less than 20 per cent of Australians own more than one property.

Even the so-called "left leaning" party are landlords.

We are run by the landed gentry. They'll continue looking out for their own. Houses are the safest asset as they're practically 100% Government backed.

alexdunmow··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
There's nothing just about this world, and if iPhones are your biggest concern in this regard then you're profiting from that injustice.
alexdunmow··on US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles
A good point. Although it could just be a probe. It could have been programmed to crash land on Earth. Much like we send probes to planets in our solar system.

That this is a possibility doesn't make it a likely one, however. But just pointing out that there's possible explanations that counter this thinking.

There's definitely a wire somewhere in the mix. Probably more than one!
alexdunmow··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
At least they were greenlighting interesting things as well back then. Now I think the main metric that gets you greenlit is being cheap to produce.
alexdunmow··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
Interesting you say that the content doesn't appeal to you anymore. I feel the same way. My observation is that, for the most part, most of Netflix's original content is reality TV and comedy specials.

They don't even seem to be bothering to create great content like Stranger Things anymore. We are at the enshittification of Netflix stage.
