alexcroox··on Upspin – Another option for file sharing
> Our target audience is personal users, families, or groups of friends. Although Upspin might have application in enterprise environments, we think that focusing on the consumer case enables easy-to-understand and easy-to-use sharing.

This definitely does not look "easy to use" unless the target audience of families only includes families where all have technical backgrounds. If I gave anyone in my family that list of instructions they would stare at me blankly. There is a reason Dropbox does so well, its simple and doesn't require you do any manual fiddling.

alexcroox··on German parents told to destroy Cayla dolls over hacking fears
AFAIK there is no mic in the doll, you cannot get responses from the internet without the smart device app, you technically talk into your phone/tablet, not the doll
alexcroox··on German parents told to destroy Cayla dolls over hacking fears
What's interesting about this, is Cayla is just a bluetooth speaker. The accompanying Android app is what people have been modifying, not remotely but locally. I think the entire thing has been blown out of proportion. Give anyone physical access to your device and they can do a lot worse than make a bluetooth speaker say some offensive words...
alexcroox··on Show HN: A 3D-printed turret so you can shoot aliens for Halloween
They certainly are!
alexcroox··on Show HN: A 3D-printed turret so you can shoot aliens for Halloween
There's one at the bottom, we'll do a write up afterwards I'm sure (like we did for Sid https://sidigital.co/blog/lab-sid)

It uses flash for the video streaming, it should detect a lack of, but sometimes if the browser interrupts the loading of it it might never trigger as not being enabled.
alexcroox··on Flash and Chrome
It's the new "material design". You can disable it in chrome://flags to get the non Windows 95 style back. I too hate it. Not sure what the recent design trend of sucking all colour from UIs is hoping to achieve.

alexcroox··on Start multi-tasking with your virtual reality headset
The constant rocking from head movement would make most feel sick before they got any real work done I imagine. Seen in the demo video here: https://youtu.be/B4JqN0uxnzw?t=28 I know I'd struggle to focus on lines of code or paragraphs of text with it constantly moving around.
alexcroox··on Scalable Live Video Streaming Using NGINX and MPEG-DASH/HLS
Not using browsers, those experiments were done using the MP4Client as a client

alexcroox··on Scalable Live Video Streaming Using NGINX and MPEG-DASH/HLS
Yer I've looked into WebRTC before but the browser support isn't good enough yet :(
alexcroox··on Scalable Live Video Streaming Using NGINX and MPEG-DASH/HLS
I wish there was a decent HTML5 low latency (< 2s) solution. Nothing comes close to RTMP + Flash still.
alexcroox··on Show HN: Host your status page on GitHub
Nice, thank you!
alexcroox··on Show HN: Host your status page on GitHub
Are there any decent open source status page systems that do the monitoring for you? I'm just looking for a basic ping or JSON response to automatically update the page for me. I'd like for the page to show there's a problem before I manually work it out for myself!

alexcroox··on SpaceX cleared for US military launches
I see it more as using some of that outrageous budget on space tech advances, relevant (old) image: http://f.cl.ly/items/1x2y2m1Q421H0B0g0Y1P/Screen%20Shot%2020...
alexcroox··on Show HN: App recommending free Wifi based on hotspot heuristics and crowd-input
So your phone can't connect to the internet at all without wifi? You should get that checked out.
alexcroox··on Lily – Drone camera
This is the big reason people don't buy these types of drones (this one certainly isn't the first of it's kind).

It doesn't have obstacle avoidance or it will make a massive deal of it.

alexcroox··on Agar.io
XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://m.agar.io/?_=1430388662333. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://agar.io' is therefore not allowed access. The response had HTTP status code 520.
alexcroox··on A fast, offline reverse geocoder in Python
This is great, does anyone know of a js version? I'm currently using http://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/reverse in my Node app but I'd rather not rely on a 3rd party, especially under heavy load.

alexcroox··on Introducing the Photon
Exactly this, I've been messing about with CC3300s and Ardiuno's in the past and it's a pain in the arse compared to this. Instant internet connectivity for a fraction of the price! alexcroox··on You cannot upload files to a server using mobile Safari 8.0
Confirmed on one my sites. Apple needs to give iOS Safari some serious attention, so much has been broken since 7.0 release, especially homepage web apps.
