alephxyz··on Silicon Valley bets on new transport to counter the rise of remote work
The o-train in Ottawa and the greens and orange lines in Montreal too.
alephxyz··on Where to wait for an elevator (2010)
Might also get confusing if the LED indicating the button's been pressed stops working
alephxyz··on Apps and advertisers are coming for your lock screen
Most people own their phone but not the software running on it
alephxyz··on Ask HN: How do you move a business forward that's using old tech?
I'm in a similar situation and what's worked so far is to do things incrementally and to make it as easy as possible for the rest of your team to switch over to the new stack. Don't try to replace everything at once if you're working on it by yourself.
alephxyz··on Ask HN: Has tip economy moved to the digital world?
Especial when I'm asked to tip before the service is even delivered! That's just a surcharge and one of the main reasons I don't use Uber Eats
alephxyz··on Tesla Autopilot Almost Steers Model 3 into Oncoming Train
The train appears on the car's HUD and the distance appears to be calculated properly before it tries to turn in front of it. I don't think object detection is what went wrong in this case (which is scarier imo).
alephxyz··on Tesla Autopilot Almost Steers Model 3 into Oncoming Train
Combing drivers for their skill and their driving routes for how easy it would be for FSD to drive through.
alephxyz··on A huge mass of used wet wipes has changed the course of an English river
Upgrading the plant doesn't fix overflows caused or exacerbated by clogged sewers. There's no easy or cheap solution, especially when your sewers are old and under a big city like London.
alephxyz··on Wasting time in tech interviews
This is why I wish cover letters were more popular. Having a candidate tell you they don't have much experience using X to do Y but that they'd love to learn to / have been working on it on their spare time is better than having them lie on their resume (or miss out on candidates that are too honest for their own good).
alephxyz··on A $2 Trillion Free-Fall Rattles Crypto to the Core
Something that stands out to me is that using market cap to estimate a speculative asset is plain wrong. 3 trillion dollars is the GDP of France and 3 times the market cap of Amazon. For a sector that produces not much besides waste heat and procedurally generated monkey images.
alephxyz··on They Think It's Murder

alephxyz··on YaLM-100B: Pretrained language model with 100B parameters
Those suggestions appear in Google chat too and even if you don't click on them, the simple fact of reading the suggestion makes you much more likely to type it yourself. There's clearly a priming effect to it.
alephxyz··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
Keep in mind the people who will actively post on that subreddit are the people who view loss prevention as something more than just a day job, so I wouldn't view it as representative of the profession. And like every subreddit, it's safe to assume it's 90% fiction and content written to maximize outrage
alephxyz··on I fucking hate Jira
One I found particularly annoying was having too many hierarchical levels for taks. Something like : Client, Contract, Deliverable, Product, Release, Change Request, Requirement, Task, Sub-tasks
alephxyz··on I fucking hate Jira
JIRA configs are usually the visible manifestation of your organisation's processes. It's Conway's law applied to task management workflows.
alephxyz··on Construction is life
No it's not. France and Italy also built a ton of those brutalist commuter towns in the 60s.
alephxyz··on Lidar industry unites to make roadways safer for pedestrians
You don't need autonomous cars for that to happen. Many cities turn some of their downtown streets into pedestrian streets in the summer and it forces cars to wait to cross at intersections.
alephxyz··on Boring Company will build a 34-mile tunnel network underneath Las Vegas
Too many things in the way (building foundations, other metro tunnels, sewers, etc.). It's only possible in lower density neighborhoods.
alephxyz··on Boring Company will build a 34-mile tunnel network underneath Las Vegas
Yup, expropriating land and blocking main roads for months while you dig down and pour concrete for a station is expensive. Although some newer metro lines like Barcelona's line 9 are able to fit most of the stations inside the larger tunnel so that they only need to dig elevators straight down to them which ends up being a lot cheaper.
alephxyz··on Reddit acquires ML startup Spell
It's not just bad it's _unusable_ on any older mobile device. Takes 10 seconds to load a page, greets you with a "Reddit is more fun in the app" popup that takes up half the page, then will display the top 3 comments but if you scroll down it will load a random different post that they think you'll like instead of showing you more comments.
alephxyz··on We will never have enough software developers (2020)
It's hard to blame students when they look at job postings and all that they see advertised is positions for programmers using languages X, Y and Z, or when they see tweets and blog posts by hotshot programmers about frameworks A and B.

The entire industry focuses way too much on 'experience with tool X' as a proxy for 'technical skill Y'. It's a bit like asking a carpenter how many years of experience they have with DeWalt cordless nail guns rather than ask about their house framing skills.

alephxyz··on Tech CEOs Want Every Worker to Have a Permanent, Public Job Performance File
>In the podcast, Youakim provides a seemingly harmless anecdote that illustrates how this works in practice. In response to Hoffman’s question about how he identifies outstanding candidates, Youakim recalled asking one interviewee to meet him for coffee at 7 a.m. on a Saturday as a test for “entitlement.” To decline to meet at such a time would, in Youakim’s mind, illustrate a lack of “going above and beyond.” The person who not only agreed to meet him then but showed up early is now one of Sezzle’s “superstars,” as Youakim put it, apparent confirmation his 7 a.m. coffee test is a good one.

He would definitely get high scores in the psychopathy and entitlement categories.

alephxyz··on Major crypto lender Celsius freezes withdrawals as markets tumble
And now LP : https://www.lapresse.ca/affaires/entreprises/2022-06-13/cryp...
alephxyz··on Temporary pause of Bitcoin withdrawals on Binance
20% interest paid out in a shitcoin whose nominal value will be down 90% by the end of the year
alephxyz··on Rising prices are affecting the ability to meet expenses for most Canadians
Quebec politics are complicated but the 1995 independence referendum was 50k votes away from a Yes/Quebexit majority, and independentist parties regularly win at the provincial level. At the federal level the Bloc Quebecois is independentist and usually gets 20-40% of the Quebec vote.

Currently Quebec has strong momentum relative to the rest of Canada and their prime minister is a soft nationalist populist who likes to stir up trouble with the federal government but public support for independence in Quebec is still around the 40% mark. There's no realistic scenario where Quebec actually becomes independent in the short term.

alephxyz··on Meta reportedly shelves plans for dual-camera smartwatch
>The first would have been a 5-megapixel front-facing camera contained within a small display notch for use with video calls, while a 12-megapixel camera placed underneath would be used to take photos and capture video when the watch was detached from the wrist.

Good lord that is a stupid design.

alephxyz··on Internet Filtering in Canada: Rogers' NHL Blocking Order
That's one way to get rid of Canadians on HN.
alephxyz··on Internet Filtering in Canada: Rogers' NHL Blocking Order
I especially like how transparent they are about their rate increases : https://blogs.teksavvy.com/teksavvy-forced-to-raise-prices-a...

On the other hand, Bell will raise their rates by 10% every year, and if you forget to call them after the 24 months of "reduced rates/credit" (whatever they call it) your monthly rate will double.

alephxyz··on Bringing Google Meet features to Duo for a single, integrated video solution
It helps that they have more servers than users
alephxyz··on Tim Hortons app violated laws in collection of ‘vast amounts’ of location data
It's because it's easy to estimate someone's location from nearby Bluetooth beacons or wifi access points.
