alephxyz··on I ran the length of every street in Pittsburgh [video]

alephxyz··on Study finds AI assistants help developers produce code likely to be buggy
That's my experience as well. I've tried Tabnine and Copilot and they're both useful as fancy line autocompleters when you know what you want to type. However they're unreliable to write code directly from business logic. They'll usually write code that _seems_ to be doing the right thing but with very subtle bugs because they don't understand the intent of the function and just try to mimic what's already there.
alephxyz··on Show HN: I built a free Chrome extension that writes entire emails using ChatGPT
I've been doing this manually for a while and it works surprisingly well even without the initial email. I usually start with a prompt like "Write an email apologizing for not being able to make it to a meeting due to a prior engagement". You can then ask the model to edit it by adding details, making it shorter or less professional and even translate it to another language.
alephxyz··on UK food price inflation hit 16.2% in October – cost of food basics surging
Most of the mining industry in Mali is owned by Barrick, Allied Gold and Anglogold Ashanti, none of them are French. The French intervention in northern Mali was to avoid a spillover into western Niger (where France sources most of the uranium it uses for its power production).

The article does mention that 56% of Washington residents use electric heading

I'm curious as to why you label yourself a "crap" employee
alephxyz··on Live vote counting for Brazilian presidential election
Still a 2 million vote gap
alephxyz··on Jim Cramer cried on CNBC for advising people to invest in Meta
Their "Reality Labs" (AR and VR) ran an operating loss of 3.7 billions this quarter. By comparison their total revenue for the same quarter was 27.7 billions.
alephxyz··on Google AI just released Flan-T5 models
I've ran the following prompt on all the models to compare them: > Q: ( False or not False or False ) is? A: Let's think step by step

Small: > False

Base: > False or False is a satire of the term False

Large: > False or not False or False is a verb. The verb

XL: > The correct answer is False or not False or False.

XXL: Model loads forever

alephxyz··on Hans Niemann Suing Magnus Carlsen, Chess.com, and Hikaru Nakamura
I think this whole drama is on chess.com for allowing cheaters back on their platform and not having a public wall of shame. They've known that Hans had cheated online and never disclosed it. Now they are trying to fool us into thinking they're on the public's side. If you don't penalize cheaters early on then every kid that's promising at chess will start to cheat online to boost their stream views and to have enough income to focus fully on chess.
alephxyz··on Documents detail plans to gut Twitter’s workforce
Why would employees need to reaffirm their commitment to what the US Congress can or can't do?
alephxyz··on CT scans of batteries
Looks like a basic CT scan but using the Plasma colormap from matplotlib (or a similar one).
alephxyz··on Poll: Which Chat Solution Does Your Company Use
Fyi ctrl+shift+v will paste without formatting and work with code blocks
alephxyz··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
If you think it's only boomers who like car-centric infrastructure, I have bad news for you.
alephxyz··on The Moorish invention that tamed Spain's mountains
Different time scales. Aqueducts are (mainly) used for transporting water. These things are used to store springwater in aquifers so that it slowly trickles out or can be pumped during the dry season.
alephxyz··on The Full Chess Cheating Report of Hans Neiman
Niemann himself admitted he cheated online on an interview.
alephxyz··on 3D Printed mini Homelab with 4 drives, and 24 hour battery backup
OP claims that the power draw is only 20 watts and that they're planning to replace the 3D printed panels for laser cut metal ones anyway
alephxyz··on After chess, cheating rows rock poker and fishing
Painkillers and anti-inflammatories are usually taken to shorten recovery time. It's usually a sign that an athlete can't keep up due to old age/injury or, if many athletes are using them, because the sport has an unrealisticly busy calendar.
alephxyz··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
And the ones who aren't educated often choose to become nurses, auxiliaries or beneficiary attendants. The training is 2-3 years, you get a yearly stipend and nearly guaranteed a job offer.
alephxyz··on Montreal is what North America could be
The previous mayors allowed areas to be rezoned to dense residential without investing in public infrastructure so you end up with neighborhoods full of condo towers with no schools or hospitals and very little public transit.
alephxyz··on Montreal is what North America could be
I think you mean little burgundy, north Verdun is full of older triplexes. You're right though, the previous two mayors really screwed up the new developments around Griffintown, Lachine's first avenue and the Children's Square. I'm also not very hopeful about the future RoyalMount project even though that's technically not part of the city of Montreal.
alephxyz··on Amazon’s Kindle Scribe is an E Ink tablet for reading and writing
I've had 3 kobos and never encountered touch screen issues. Just make sure not to drop it down a staircase.
alephxyz··on CD Projekt says Cyberpunk 2077 copy sales reach 20M

alephxyz··on Biogen agrees to pay $900M to settle drug kickbacks allegations
> The United States agrees that Relator shall be awarded a share of $250,000,000 ofthe Federal Settlement Amount paid by Biogen.
alephxyz··on Dear Chess World
It's even less than 5% since Magnus had whites.
alephxyz··on Layoffs at Canadian tech startups
At least a few of them found a niche and are doing okay, but it was almost funny to see the number of AI startups 3-4 years ago whose business model was essentially "hope businesses pay us to apply ML libraries to their data".
alephxyz··on How to use Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone 14
Or some random bug doesn't let you use the feature because Microsoft Teams is installed on your phone.
alephxyz··on iPhone 14 Pro comes with dual-frequency GPS
Does the Android OS and apps like Google maps actually use multiple frequencies to get a position fix? I have friends with Samsung phones supporting dual frequency gps yet the GPS accuracy doesn't seem any better than single frequency devices.
