alden5··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
It'll be very interesting what they'll cut though, I have a feeling that any future version will be very similar. There's not much they can cut without making it feel cheep and comparable to a cheeper meta product
alden5··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I fear they'll position it just like they have the ipad, primarily focused towards entertainment with a super locked down environment that's noticeably worse than a mac, if it ends up that way it'll be a deal breaker for me although we'll have to see, they did convince me to buy an ipad for nothing but procreate lol
alden5··on The unsung hero of the Apple Watch is its hidden buttons
There is a 7$ watch link remover on amazon with prime one-day shipping where i'm at, apple's no-tool bands cost $350+. there isn't some sorta collusion between watchmakers and jewelers when bands are designed with a simple pin link mechanism.
alden5··on Hacking Around ChatGPT’s Character Limits with the Code Interpreter
The token limit is 100% an artificial limitation. When ChatGPT first released last november I took the opportunity to try pasting 3k-line codebases into it to get it to walk me through them and it worked perfectly fine, putting that same code in the OpenAI tokenizer tells me it's ~33k tokens, way above the limits today. The reason they do this is because every token takes up ~1mb of video memory and that adds up real quick. If you had infinite video memory there would be no "fundamental limit" to how long a LLM can output.

OpenAI then has two limits on inputs. The first artificial one ensures that people don't get overzealous inputing too much, otherwise they'll hit the second hard limit of how much vram their cards have. To the LLM itself there is no difference between characters from the chatbot and human, the only hard limiter is the total number of tokens. I tried this out by inputing a 4k-token string into ChatGPT as many times as I could and it failed on the 20th input, meaning that the hard limit is >80k tokens. Converting this to vram gives us >80gb which is the exact amount of ram the Nvidia a100 card has.

alden5··on Apple previews Live Speech, Personal Voice, and more new accessibility features
Same thought here! it really sucks that 3g networks shut down making most flip phones functionality useless. there really aren't any modern smart phones designed for people who want something easy to use which makes this announcement so exciting
alden5··on More hospitals create police forces
The increased violence at the hospital I worked at for a bit was because by law anyone who police find to be overdosing need to be brought to nearest emergency room. This meant alot of the people there weren't mentally sound and definitely didn't want to be there. There were often a half-dozen cops in the ER trying to get someone being aggressive to calm down. It was quite an experience working there hearing "code gray in the emergency department" about twice a day.
alden5··on Case study: fake hardware cryptowallet
the problem is the sorta person to buy a wallet from a classifieds website isn't willing to spend $30 on a scale to weigh it, because if they had that money they'd just buy it from the official store instead
alden5··on Bot or Human? Detecting ChatGPT Imposters with a Single Question
Most of these questions are completely impractical

Use m to substitute p, a to substitute e, n to substitute a, g to substitute c, o to substitute h, how to spell peach under this rule?
For years people have complained about how inaccessible regular image classification captchas can be and now we want to move to confusing riddles?? the average person i know would see this problem and immediately shut their computer.

and it's not like llm's cant be made logical either, using chatgpt (gpt-3.5) i appended each of the 4 logic puzzles presented in the paper with:

"write a python script to solve this problem, ensure the script only prints the answer:"
and each of the scripts it generated solved the problem perfectly first try, originally i just made a script that used an llm to classify the variables in one type of problem and a normal function to solve it and then i just though "why don't i have the llm write the script" and sure enough it did, insanity
alden5··on He wrote a book on a rare subject. Then a ChatGPT replica appeared on Amazon
The amount of value that ChatGPT has given me is enough where I don't care at all if my own tutorials and documentation has been scraped to expand the model's knowledge. I'm not profiting off my work either way, and if helps people understand things it's honestly a plus. Although I definitely understand the frustration from people having their copyrighted material used to compete against them, the pushback from artists against image generation from copyrighted data sets is 100% warranted.
alden5··on You can now buy physical products in games and apps with Amazon Anywhere
I really like the idea of being able to customize every part of the shopping experience, modern online shopping feels really generic nowadays when everyone uses stripe and every checkout looks the same. Really interesting how amazon will handle orders on an interface they don't have complete control over, not that amazon doesn't have their own dark patterns but they could be potentially be liable if an app started tricking people into ordering things.
alden5··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
nope, there's a $4.99/month option and a 49.99/year option
alden5··on Airbnb will now tell you about any annoying checkout chores before you book

alden5··on Ask HN: Besides Legos, what’s the best kit for prototyping mechanical devices?
gobilda has a great library of parts for building solid mechanical devices

https://www.gobilda.com

alden5··on Heathkit
I'd say between that healthkit and arduino's it was snap-circuits which allowed kids like me to get into electronics, the manual was detailed and looking back it's fairly technical although it unfortunately it always assumed you knew what they meant, the manual would tell you to never short circuit the battery but 7-y/old me was so confused as to why you shouldn't because it never got into things like electron flow.
alden5··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
mr. fancypants here with the silent tmc2209 driver lol
alden5··on Nuke-launching AI would be illegal under proposed US law
basically a law preventing the equivalent of a US dead hand. Its really interesting how the average person thinks that AI has just been “discovered”. With the advent of LLMs being able to emulate intelligence it’s made people alot more cautious of automated systems that have already existed for 20+ years. now that computers can talk they’re suddenly going to take over the world.

alden5··on The Disappointment of 5G
At least for me individually 5G has been a worse experience vs LTE because of how quickly it drains the tiny 2,227mah battery in my iphone 12 mini, turning off 5G doesn't noticeably affect my cell performance while at the same time increases my battery life by 1-2 hours. I can't imagine how bad it'd be if i had a ultra-wideband plan, that radio requires a giant cutout in the metal frame which is also only present on u.s. region iphones. 5g ultra-wideband has always seemed like just a party trick to me (who would ever need gigabyte speeds on a phone??)
alden5··on iOS 16 has hidden system to restrict specific feature based on user location
If it ends up that side-loading is region specific locked by gps i'm trowing a rock at one of the giant panes of glass at my local apple store.
alden5··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
Yea I found android better at preventing ads, when I switched to an iPhone I noted that policy and was relieved that I wouldn't be bothered with ads again; only to find that most apps for retail stores still send me coupons and deals with zero way to turn them off, android has granular notification settings so I could turn "promotions" off but keep "order notifications" on, meanwhile that isn't there on ios and most apps don't have settings for that inside them either.

I will also note that whenever an app would't provide the option to turn off promotions on my android i'd just make buzzkill filter to only allow notifications with the word "order" meanwhile any functionality like that wouldn't be possible on ios, i cant even change the notification noise for most apps!

alden5··on iOS 17 will reportedly set the stage for sideloading apps on iPhone
Im fairly certain it will be just like macos, sure you can make apps people can download, but if you don't want your users to face scary popups when starting up your app for the first time you gotta cough up $99/year for a developer subscription
alden5··on iOS 17 will reportedly set the stage for sideloading apps on iPhone
Apple already lets you sign your own apps, but i will admit the 1 week expiration is very quick and a $99/year developer subscription for 1 year signing is way too expensive for most hobbyists.

It'll be great to see all the neat little apps that macos has come over to ios

alden5··on This website is solar powered and running on a Raspberry Pi-like computer
There’s something charming about a website being tied to something physical like how this one requires sunny weather, reminds me of the blog post “I wish my web server were in the corner of my room” https://interconnected.org/home/2022/10/10/servers

although if this site is truly meant to be environmentally friendly I feel like that’s completely negated by the fact it uses lithium ion batteries, switching to lithium for such a low power project just moves the environmental damage somewhere else

alden5··on Apple will use 100 percent recycled cobalt in batteries by 2025
iPhone batteries are user replaceable though! Apple will sell you the battery for $91 (only $45 if you send your old battery back) and will rent you all the equipment you need packed in two pelican cases for $49/week, shipping included!

alden5··on The Coming of Local LLMs
What makes it so much better than normal text classification for me is it doesn't require tons of training data to accurately classify text. using it to parse craigslist posts which i might find interesting showed very promising results although it's fairly slow on my base m1 machine.
alden5··on Thieves cut hole in a bathroom wall, steal $500k worth of items from Apple Store
yea i'm fairly certain activation lock would prevent the phones from working, one interesting fact is that they can disable accessories based off the serial number, iphones won't connect to an accessory if apple identifies it as banned which is the meaning behind those "accessory not compatible" messages. this happened a while back when apple bricked all those 2-in-1 lightning passthrough + headphone jack adapters overnight with a software update, but even if they could i doubt they'd do it to their own cables.
alden5··on Ford to drop AM radio in new models, except commercial vehicles
especially considering a backup camera and an accompanying display became a requirement in the states, AM radio would be nothing
alden5··on There's something off about LED bulbs
one application where led's won't work at all is oven lights. Nobody makes an led oven light because they're required to withstand really high temperatures, glass enclosed incandescents can handle the heat just fine while led's just melt.
alden5··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
They're still beholden to shareholders, anything that'll get them more money they'll do, and I'm sure showing ads on 1.4 billion active devices isn't just chump change to them.
alden5··on Apple’s Best Hope for New Headset: a Smartwatch-Like Trajectory
apple glass would be my guess
alden5··on OpenAI’s policies hinder reproducible research on language models
the project for training i found required a nvidia gpu with 16gb of vram, it also would take about 6 hours
