alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: 9-5 burnout?
I'm guessing that you're an introvert and being around everyone in the office is what wears you out. If this is case, try and move your desk to a quieter less crowded part of the office and invest in some good headphones. You can also try going out for a walk in the middle of the day to get away from everyone.

Another thing you can do is focus on having more energy by doing things like working out, eating better, etc. If you are always tired you might want to go see your doctor and check for hypothyroid and / or low testosterone (assuming you are a middle-aged man)

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2017)
I don't want my family and friends to be ashamed of me. If I get the job, will people know I use PHP?
alansmitheebk··on How do remote companies handle psychotherapy for their employees?
I think that any employee, whether remote or not, should see a therapist if they are suffering from depression or any other mental health issue.

Hopefully your employer provides you with a healthcare coverage plans which includes a mental health benefit.

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Should a back end Engineer be able to answer what makes an API RESTful?
Of course they should. Back-end developers usually build APIs. Hell, I'm a front-end developer and I can easily answer that question. The only thing I can think of is that the people you are interviewing do not have web experience. Are they fresh out of university? I've met plenty of CS students who know all the algorithms and everything about C / C++ but nothing about the web.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: What's the most important skill for a developer?
The ability to learn new things quickly. The technology is constantly changing. You are never done learning.
alansmitheebk··on A new way to hire: contributing to open source projects
A week-long technical assessment? Cooking meals as part of the interview process? Jesus H. Christ. Now I've heard it all. We as a community have got to start pushing back on the increasingly obnoxious interviewing process for software development jobs. What other field do you know of that would put up with this sort of thing?
alansmitheebk··on Babel-preset-php: PHP7 to ES7 syntax translator
Why?
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Gmail that are new, cool, etc?
I use protonmail (protonmail.com). It's encrypted email developed by the scientists at CERN. The data is hosted in Switzerland and therefore subject to Swiss privacy laws. There are app for iPhone and Android. They just came out with a VPN product, too.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
I replied earlier, but here are a few more ideas:

* Ask if the company is involved in mentoring, community outreach, or any other type of philanthropic activity. If they do some things like Script Ed for example, they're probably nice people and not sexist d-bags.(Although I wouldn't assume that the inverse is also true).

* Ask if the company participates in any diversity initiatives or conferences.

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
I'm not a woman but I have a few ideas that might help:

* Check glassdoor.com to see what current and former employees have said about the company and how they rate it. While the feedback may not be specific to gender / diversity concerns, you can probably get a good feel for whether or not it's a happy place or a disgruntled place.

* Ask how many women work there in developer roles.

* Try to find a publicly traded company to work at verses a startup. A publicly traded company has a real HR department and potentially a lot to lose if they get sued. In a startup, there typically is no HR department. There might be one person who is in charge of some HR-related things like benefit administration, but that person is not equipped to deal with things like handling sexual harassment allegations. That person is also likely be friends with the founders.

I would imagine that the medical community could learn a lot about what causes this phenomenon by studying the DNA of the parent and child.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Was the U.S. election hacked?
That was a really thoughtful answer. It had almost as much depth as the thought process of the average American voter.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Was the U.S. election hacked?
I am wondering the same thing. Either "all the polls were wrong" or the election was hacked. Polling has been conducted for decades. It seems highly unlikely that all of the institutions involved suddenly forgot how to do it properly this year.
alansmitheebk··on [dead]
I'd go on strike right now just based on the principal that he is totally unacceptable. I would love to see everyone from the blue states go on strike unless he steps down. We have wall street. We have silicon valley. We have the cultural and intellectual capitals. We have the major ports. The red states have dairy and corn. Fuck them. We can live without them. They can't live without us.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Where do you go to read or watch neutral and unbiased news?
Well, it's quite significant. How can we even talk about which news is objective when their is a large portion of the US population that consider rightwing pundits to be "the real news" and everything else to be lies? This is a major problem. We are living in a reality distortion field where George W. Bush has never been criticized for failing to protect us from 9/11 but people want to "lock her up!" [Hillary Clinton] because an embassy in Benghazi was attacked?

I realize I'm going off topic here but sooner or later we have to confront this issue. Reality is not subjective. If our society can't learn how to parse reality we will never be able to unfuck ourselves.

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Where do you go to read or watch neutral and unbiased news?
I'm talking about the kind of Republicans that rail against "The Mainstream Media", which basically means anything that isn't Fox News, Brietbart, Rush Limbaugh, etc. These people literally think that all news is "liberal lies" unless it's coming from a rightwing source.

Am I talking about most Republicans? That I don't know. I haven't conducted a poll to see how many Republicans have that mentality. Certainly anyone who supports trump or watches Fox News on a regular basis has that mentality --and that's a lot of people!

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Where do you go to read or watch neutral and unbiased news?
I agree with coreyp_1; there are no unbiased news sources. Also, people perceive bias based on their world view. For example, a Republican in the US will perceive "liberal bias" in any story that doesn't present Republican politicians in a positive light, regardless of its veracity.

Having said all of that, some news sources have less spin. I like Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/. I think they are more similar to a wire service than a "we cater to your worldview" brand.

As an American, I sadly find that the UK's Guardian have better coverage of what is happening in the US than most US "news" papers and websites. That being said, The Guardian have some of the most maddening identity-politik editorials. One of my "favorite" Guardian editorials was Syreeta McFadden's piece about how film stock is racist because doesn't pick up the details of black faces. (Maybe learn how to use a camera, Syreeta. These are these things called F-stops and shutter speeds). I also "enjoyed" abortion columnist Jessica Valenti's recent piece in which she mentioned that her friends carry tote bags bearing the slogan "Lord, give me confidence of a mediocre white man." ...but I digress...

The intercept is an interesting read. While it certainly has a very strong point of view, you can be sure that they're not working for "The Man".

BTW, someone where mentioned the Washington Post. Have a look at this before you tout WP as unbiased: https://theintercept.com/2016/07/22/oil-lobby-paid-washingto...

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Of Introverts, the Open Office, and ADHD
I think ADHD is actually considered a disability. However, most people probably wouldn't be comfortable telling their boss that they have ADHD. If your ADHD having a negative impact on your performance and you're about to get fired revealing your disability might save you from losing your job. However, I don't imagine being known as the ADHD guy is going to brighten your prospects for future promotions.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Of Introverts, the Open Office, and ADHD
Thank you. I think I needed to hear that.
alansmitheebk··on Long-Secret Stingray Manuals Detail How Police Can Spy on Phones
Are the wireless carriers (ie Verizon, AT&T, etc) complicit in the manufacture of these products? It would seem to me that those companies would regard the use of a "Stingray" to impersonate one of their towers as an unauthorized intrusion into their network.

Is it possible for wireless carriers to modify their towers so as to make them less susceptible to spoofing? If so, why don't they do so?!

I'm not a telecom engineer so this is not my area of expertise.

alansmitheebk··on Stepping down as Nodevember organizer
Since we're keeping score on what speakers make others reluctant to participate, I do not feel comfortable speaking at or attending conferences where Kassandra Perch is a speaker.

And when it comes to the selection of speakers and their topics, I'm more interested in learning about technology than hearing about diversity and having an equal number of male, female, and gender-neutral speakers. After all, these are TECH conferences.

alansmitheebk··on Google to train 2M Indian Android developers
Seems like that would translate into lower salaries and / or less work for Android developers in the US and Europe...
alansmitheebk··on We built voice modulation to mask gender in technical interviews
This is ridiculous. At some point we need to face up to the reality that most women in the US are just not interested in working in technology. There is no evil conspiracy to keep women out of tech. Maybe high school guidance counselors and parents don't encourage women to go into tech. Maybe there is someone to blame, but it's not the tech industry's fault.
alansmitheebk··on Petition for London independence signed by thousands after Brexit vote
What the hell is wrong with you people? Stop behaving like petulant children. This isn't just a protest vote. It has real consequences. Even if you don't care that you are fucking up your own economy can you at least be mindful that your stupidity is fucking up the global economy?

I thought we Americans were the dumb dumbs...

alansmitheebk··on Google Fonts Redesigned
Most of these look like shit in chrome.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: Ranking dev bootcamps when hiring?
I think they are all equally unhirable.
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
Is it sexual harassment B/C he asked her out or B/C he used the term "MILF" or B/C she wasn't interested? Did the whatsapp portion of the conversation occur at work or outside of work? Does your company have a policy that forbids coworkers to date?

My former boss dated an employee who worked in a different department. People at work knew and it was not considered a problem. No one got fired or sued. I guess I'm trying to understand the difference here. It seems to me the major difference is that in this case the woman wasn't interested. So is the takeaway here that if you ask out a woman you work with she will either say yes if she is interested or you will potentially be fired if she is not?

alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: What's your greatest weakness?
...also procrasturbation
alansmitheebk··on Ask HN: What's your greatest weakness?
Asthma
alansmitheebk··on Princeton Agrees to Consider Removing a President’s Name
No one is forcing you to go to Princeton. If you don't feel comfortable there because of the name of a building transfer to another school. Or get a fucking life.
