alanbernstein··on Meta launches Hyperscape, technology to turn real-world spaces into VR
There was a demo app showing artists' studios in very high detail. It was really neat.

I imagine if you ever want to "hang out in VR", it would be nice to do it in your own virtual living room, instead of the imaginary virtual spaces.

The technology is neat. I don't know that either of those justifies the R&D effort. So just try to enjoy that neat technology exists for its own sake.

alanbernstein··on Without data centers, GDP growth was 0.1% in the first half of 2025
They are hoping to invest in the companies that will be the (next) electronic equivalent of rent-seeking land owners, as faang are now. It's better since land is physically necessary to live, but only marginally so.
alanbernstein··on Hosting a website on a disposable vape
This is amazing, it reminds me of a biology article about a new life form that is not quite virus, not quite bacteria, but something that manages to blur the line between them.

Resource extraction eventually fills all niches, for better or for worse.

alanbernstein··on Hosting a website on a disposable vape
This is backwards, it's not about eliminating the landfill, it's about recovering the materials which were previously not scarce but now are or will be soon.
alanbernstein··on 3D modeling with paper
They mentioned it, seem to prefer pepakura.
alanbernstein··on AI might yet follow the path of previous technological revolutions
I think I misinterpreted your comment as not understanding the AI effect, but actually you're just summarizing it kind of concisely and sarcastically?

LLMs are one of the first technologies that makes me think the term "AI effect" needs to be updated to "AGI effect". The effect is still there, but it's undeniable that LLMs are capable of things that seem impossible with classical CS methods, so they get to retain the designation of AI.

alanbernstein··on I Don't Have Spotify
The behavior I'm imagining is: someone sends me a link to a song, provided by their music service of choice, which I can't use. I click the link, then my OS tries to open that resource in my preferred music player. I haven't thought about what happens if that doesn't work (not available on the service for example).

You're probably right that it would end up being more clunky and broken.

But I think a song is much closer to a resource (like a hyperlink to a website), than to a contact address (like a mailto link).

This is actually a regular problem for me, and I solved it by backing up my messages, then using a script to scan them for music URLs, and create a playlist on my music service of choice. It felt like a pretty silly thing to create.

alanbernstein··on I Don't Have Spotify
Couldn't we have a music:// protocol or something, to be opened by the OS's preferred music app? Anything like that already exist?
alanbernstein··on John Carmack's arguments against building a custom XR OS at Meta
Carmack's swim lane was exceptionally wide. My understanding was that this sort of criticism was actually his main job duty.
alanbernstein··on Strange CW Keys
Video games?
alanbernstein··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
I completely relate - but I listened to this one, alone, in full. Technology has produced many things you might call a miracle, but this one stands out.
alanbernstein··on Model intelligence is no longer the constraint for automation
I have never understood "post scarcity" to mean the end of ALL scarcity, which is essentially impossible by definition.

Relative to 500 years ago, we have already nearly achieved post-scarcity for a few types of items, like basic clothing.

It seems this is yet another concept for which we need to adjust our understanding from binary to a spectrum, as we find our society advancing along the spectrum, in at least some aspects.

alanbernstein··on It is time to 'Correct the Map'
This site's claim is that it is important to Africa for other regions to normalize using projections other than Mercator.
alanbernstein··on It is time to 'Correct the Map'
The colors and the sliders are both a bit extraneous to the point of the visualization, they're supposed to help but they kind of obscure the point.

For the northern landmasses, Greenland for example, the smaller outline is the equal-earth-projection, and the larger outline is the conventional Mercator projection. That's all there is to it.

alanbernstein··on Open hardware desktop 3D printing is dead?
The claim is about open hardware, not 3d printing in general. And the claimed problem is that the clever cost reduction is Chinese state subsidies.
alanbernstein··on My DIY modular charging station
So you have a charging shed?
alanbernstein··on My DIY modular charging station
Generally I'm all for this, but newcomers to this stuff should be aware that DIYing 120v outlet or switch hardware can be a fire risk.
alanbernstein··on A candidate giant planet imaged in the habitable zone of α Cen A
For that range of mass values, the surface gravity would be relatively close to that of earth, even lower at 90x.
alanbernstein··on Project Hyperion: Interstellar ship design competition
What "current and neat future technologies" do you suggest using for this approach?
alanbernstein··on It's a DE9, not a DB9 (but we know what you mean)
I hypothesize that the car cigarette lighter port is the only truly standard, widely-used connector remaining. Wall outlets, just for 120V in the US, have at least three variants. 3.5mm audio plugs have at least four variants.
alanbernstein··on Comparing the Glove80 and Maltron Keyboards
Have you tried the moonlander, or similar style thumb pads with articulated or more exaggerated angle? Seems to me that the thumb action should be at about 90 degrees to the finger action. I have a fancy keyboard to help with wrist issues, and I think thumb issues will arise next.
alanbernstein··on Peep Show is the most realistic portrayal of evil I have seen (2020)
Yes, as requested by the comment I replied to. Acknowledging the existence of a thing is not equivalent to condoning it.
alanbernstein··on TODOs aren't for doing
Whatever theme/packages I use in Emacs have been highlighting NOTE, TODO, FIXME in comments for at least the last 10 years, so that's what I use.
alanbernstein··on My favorite use-case for AI is writing logs
Never heard of it before this, but it looks nice. Some tools are better ergonomic than sharp?
alanbernstein··on Fighting Brandolini's Law with Sampling
The "falsiness distribution" by itself is not capable of answering this kind of question. Imagine a politician who speaks just one statement, a "pants on fire" lie. They immediately reach the top liar spot.

The distribution also leaves out the significance and the reach of the statements.

Your statement is about as meaningful as the "fastest growing <whatever>" trick. E.g. growing from 0->1 user is infinite growth, so wins fastest growing immediately.

alanbernstein··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
Details you found using a tester? I label some USB cables, but without a tester there is a limit to how much I know about them.
alanbernstein··on LLM Inevitabilism
Just try to imagine what you would have thought about this technology if you saw it with no warning, 10 years ago. Would "a few tens of thousands of lines of code" still seem small?
alanbernstein··on Vibe-Coding a PCB – surprisingly good
It seems that "vibe X" just means "using LLMs" now, regardless of what the original intent of the term was.
alanbernstein··on Jank Programming Language
The "one letter danger" section is hilarious, but did you try to find any examples with a one-vowel difference?
alanbernstein··on Show HN: I built a tool to solve window management
Cool, but how does it work if you have multiple windows in one app?

I used hammerspoon for something similar, but it worked on the window title. So, I could add custom titles to my chrome/iterm/code windows, and switch by pressing a shortcut and then typing 1-4 letters to match the title. It was my favorite window management UI for my work laptop with an absurd amount of tabs open.
