And if you just can't conjure up the skill required to hear the whole song, the main menu fortunately links to its soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/dutoncmusic/du-tonc-surging-memories

I think you're referring to the "tyranny of the rocket equation". Learned about it on an XKCD what-if: http://what-if.xkcd.com/38/
alainbryden··on What it looks like when Google links to your website
Congrats! I love alternativeTo. It's my way to train parents and friends to find the best free alternatives to whatever ad-bloated software SEO'd their way to the top of Google last time they decided they needed to convert a movie or download music.

This simple piece of advice (and a bookmark in their favorite browser) has greatly reduced the amount of PC rebuilding I've had to do for them over the years!

alainbryden··on A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game
Agreed. A minute of dodging, ship goes zoom, and then a game reset. It'd be nice to at least see a summary of my resources, or a score, or anything.
alainbryden··on Battery Swap [video]
I wonder if anyone has considered buying a Tesla (free recharges for life), driving home every day and finding a way to discharge the battery back into the grid through their meter to negate their home electricity bill.
alainbryden··on Poll: long-term contractors, what is your hourly rate?
I've been billing daily but yeah, in my limited consulting experience hourly is way more stressful and it isn't practical to have to account for your work at that level of granularity. Especially since this is a question specifically about long term work.

That being said, this question is more useful as an hourly rate since some people set their daily/weekly rate different because they work more or less than an 8 hour day / 40 hour week.

I see what you did there

alainbryden··on 2013 Nissan Leaf Review
The stat sheet (http://autos.nydailynews.com/compare/1525-1606-1613-3976/201...) suggests that the Tesla S has none of the features of the other cars (including some obviously false claims like that it has no driver and passenger seat airbags). All of Tesla's features can be found here http://www.teslamotors.com/models/features Almost every one of those red 'x's placed in the Tesla column is a bold faced lie.

The stat sheet states outright that Tesla has no backup assist, video display, usb audio connections, bluetooth, climate control, navigation, on and on, and every single one of those is included as a feature on this section of the Tesla page: http://www.teslamotors.com/models/features#/interior

alainbryden··on 2013 Nissan Leaf Review
After the third paragraph sits this comparison with the Tesla Model S. http://autos.nydailynews.com/compare/1525-1606-1613-3976/201...

The word 'disingenuous' comes to mind, as you can see they've deliberately started off with a Tesla Model S column containing nothing but red "x" marks suggesting it lacks every feature of every other car. Looks like a disguised smear campaign to me.

alainbryden··on Show HN: Remove backgrounds from images online
Miraculous. Took me 15 seconds to remove this picture of my lovebird from a pretty busy background: http://clippingmagic.com/images/10765/f5ddd90ec956d482174e7e...

I thought it'd have trouble since the bird is constantly changing colors but with just a scribble and a circle it figured it out.

alainbryden··on Hummingbird – A fresh take on music notation
As someone who is currently unable to read music, but wants to learn, this doesn't seem any more inviting than traditional notation. I'm further discouraged by the fact that even if I were able to somehow learn this notation faster, I wouldn't be able to read anything that hasn't been translated into this notation, which would really limit the practicality of going to all that trouble in the first place. My first impression is that learning this notation would be duping me into becoming dependent on a single source for all my sheet music.

Maybe it would be helpful if instead of the front page demoing the most complicated excerpt you can conjure up, it demonstrated some simpler (well known?) music in both your notation and traditional notation.

Yep. When I got not result after carefully considering my first answer, I quit.
alainbryden··on Analysis of Stack Overflow's Survey of 10K developers
This is disappointing for me, C# developers tend to make less. Then again, young people tend to make less (definitely causation) and C# developers tend to be young, so maybe there's no causation there. Or maybe there is and that's why older people get out of C# development!
alainbryden··on If Only I Knew This Shit in College
"Github got me kicked out of the bar"

These headline is super intriguing. Too bad this is only a set of topic title slides with no context or elaboration.

Nice slideshow I guess?

I hope these people are carefully considering the many sources of input lag[1], especially display lag, before giving the controller a bad rap.

alainbryden··on Blocked Sites is discontinued
I don't remember using this feature much, but when I downloaded my block list this is what I found:

  www.teachexcel.com
  craftkeys.com
  softwaretopic.informer.com
  www.telerik.com
  eggheadcafe.com
  www.kaboodle.com
  bigresource.com
Damn those aggregator sites are annoying.

Worked for me too. Felt a bit laggy, like steering a boat going real slow, still amazing.
alainbryden··on Beware of the Tricks Used By Clients To Manipulate Freelancers
Intriguing title, but without anecdotes the whole article feels hollow.
alainbryden··on The best programmers are the quickest to Google
Microsoft recruiters are doing their rounds for Seattle, and I was just asked over the phone how I would implement a quick sort. The answer I wanted to give would have been something like this blog post. As a developer I would never waste valuable time trying to roll my own version of an algorithm that's probably available on Wikipedia and optimized for every programming language imaginable. I guess what they were looking for was some buzz words like "divide and conquer" and "big oh n log n time". I understand interviewing community college graduates with no experience like this, but young adults with 6 years of SE behind them? Ridiculous.
alainbryden··on Some problems are so hard they need to be solved piece by piece
I was always afraid that by putting my profile on StackOverflow Careers, prospective employers would see us as individuals liable to spend company time solving other peoples' problems online and therefore be less likely to hire us.
alainbryden··on Buy Nothing Day
That is irrelevant to the point at hand - asking everyone to not buy things on one day, even if successful, merely postpones the retailers' revenues by a day or so.

A more poignant campaign would revolve around convincing people not to buy certain unnecessary things at all, ever.

alainbryden··on Buy Nothing Day
I shop for groceries about once per month, to buy food in bulk then freeze bread, meat and veggies. I grow some veggies in the backyard during the summer. I'm not the healthiest eater, mostly I just hate shopping. This gives me 6 misc days to buy gifts for birthdays and things.

I guess this doesn't count jumping on the odd humble indie bundle.

alainbryden··on Desktop game controlled with your Smartphone/Tablet
Even worse. I opened it in Chrome on my computer, then in Chrome on my Nexus 7, and on the latter it said "Sorry! This is a Chrome experiment".

alainbryden··on Buy Nothing Day
I buy nothing about 95% of the days in a year. I don't get why this is supposed to make such a difference?
alainbryden··on Trotify: make your bicycle sound like a horse [video]
Any chance of making the DXF file available for cheap to people with access to their own CNC machines?

Unfortunately, while I am both a geek and a horse-person, I'm not much of a biker. The target audience is small, but hopefully with only 1000 takers needed, you'll meet your goal.

alainbryden··on Trotify: make your bicycle sound like a horse [video]
Agreed. The prototype video got me far more excited about the product than the meme filled promo. It should be featured more prominently.
alainbryden··on Thank You HN: From 30 people whose lives you saved
Voted for Watsi. They're currently ahead by less than 3%, so they could use a little push!
alainbryden··on Show HN: my weekend project, Quotably
This is great. I hope you get some sort of referral payment for linking back to books for purchase on Amazon. A site like this could inspire a lot of people to buy a lot of new books.

I recommend allowing users to pick from a set of categories to filter quotes from genres they want to highlight/ignore. For instance, I would be interested in seeing highlighted passages from fiction novels without running into a bunch of self-help or religious passages.

As a further step, this would be a perfect implementation of social media advertisements. The most popular passages serve as a good advertisement for books. If you have a little widget that shows a random book and favourited passage, with the ability to cycle through to others, any website could host this interactive advertisement and see a portion of revenues from the amazon kindle purchases.

Keep it up, you're on to something here.

alainbryden··on Do the police give more tickets at the end of the month to meet quotas?
Well it's not necessarily anecdotal evidence. It's anecdotal in that it proves that only some forces in some countries have a quota system, but that is enough to answer the question: Some definitely do. It certainly doesn't answer the question for all known police forces in all countries, but I don't think that's a reasonable expectation.
alainbryden··on The New Grooveshark
I'm a frequent user, and I am really liking this design. Change is always a little difficult to get used to, but I'm finding it snappier.

The "Playlists" screen doesn't seem to be working. I tried visiting it and the spinner's been going for a long time. I only have about 20. I also right clicked a song and clicked 'Add to Playlist' > 'New Playlist' and it said it was created, but when I right clicked another song, the new playlist wasn't available in the list of my playlists. I said 'New Playlist' again and typed in the same thing, and it created it again. I clicked the button to view the new playlist and it only had the one song in it, so it must have overwritten what I'd just created. Dragging songs into the playlist is working fine, but I have no idea if it's getting saved, since I can't view the "My Playlists" page, and it's not showing up in the context menu listing my playlists. Anyways, hope this helps you do some debugging in the area.
