al_james··on JQuery Quicksand plugin
Oh is it? Whoops!
al_james··on Homemade CPU – from scratch
Sure... If you want to learn about that you could practice writing code for a low level emulator (loads are available). No need to actually build your own CPU.

It is pretty cool though.

al_james··on JQuery Quicksand plugin
Hmmmm... does require the addition of a non-standard attribute ("data-id") to the HTML/XHTML... so it will be invalid... Shame that cant be done with class names. E.g. class="data-id-macos".
al_james··on Homemade CPU – from scratch
These guys are like vintage car nuts. Its like they are reliving the glory days of simple and understandable CPUs. Those days have gone! Building your own CPU is cool, but its a bit of a waste of talent; it does nothing to advance technology is you see what I mean.

Give me a Tesla Roadster.

al_james··on Daring Fireball: "Facebook login"
"All this argument over whether the iPad is too simple — if anything it’s probably still too complex." -- perfect summation off all that nonsense a couple of weeks ago.
al_james··on The iPhone obsession
When you spend money developing a mobile app, you have to future proof it so that keeps up with the apps/sites of similar functionality, otherwise people will end going to your competitors (obviously that statement depends on your service, but its certainly the case in my sector). People with smartphones wont want to use a site that is so stripped down it would work well on a crappy handset.

We are sitting on the edge of a large explosion of smartphone devices and (potentially) users (with lots of Android handsets coming out this year). In the UK you can now get a Android powered device for £20 / month with a free handset. If you want a smartphone (and therefore probably interested in using the web), you will be able to afford one this year (at least in Europe!). This is going to be huge.

The iPhone is the standard they all will judge themselves against, and therefore the iPhone is the benchmark device.

I would suspect that the 50% smartphone / 50% other phone traffic statistic will be way higher towards smartphones in 12 months time.

Yes but only geeks know how to download that...
al_james··on Dear HN: I wrote an SVG charting library. What do you think?
Ummm... I think you can make that argument for ANY chart type. I can't differentiate between 25% and 24% in a bar graph either.

In fact, IMO, bar charts (normally) have the far worse problem of being relative to the largest value. In a percentage situation, you want the size of the bars to be relative to the whole, otherwise its misleading to say the least...

So the take away fact is that all visualisations have weaknesses under certain conditions.

But to offer graphing library that does not offer pie charts is, well, a bit silly in my opinion.

al_james··on Dear HN: I wrote an SVG charting library. What do you think?
What's wrong with pie charts? For certain datasets and views they are perfect. What's more, people understand them.
al_james··on Firebug website just got a super gorgeous facelift
Yes, thats the only reason Firefox is installed on my machine.
al_james··on [dead]
Geesh! I think someone needs to get laid...
al_james··on Nokia: Sorry Apple we beat you by a mile
Exactly. Its about _trajectory_. Nokia is loosing the mind war. More and more teenagers (ok, just one market segments, but others show similar trends) are holding out for a 'cool phone' which less and less carry Nokia logos. Ask people who work in phone shops (at least in the UK), people come in excited about LGs / Samsungs / iPhones NOT Nokias any more.
al_james··on Facebook speeds up PHP
JIT native code compilers do make quite a bit of difference over byte code execution is some situations. E.g. loops over many elements (say loops that concatenate large HTML fragments, ok the string operation are already native, but other bits of the loop will not be (e.g. array access)).

So, I agree that the main 'bottleneck' in most PHP apps is probably not-PHP itself, there is still scope for improvement.

al_james··on Google launches realtime search
Arg... It seems we can't escape twitter anywhere. More pointless drivel compressed into 140 characters for no apparent reason.
al_james··on Ordnance Survey postcode datasets available for free reuse from April 2010
Yes... I would like to think that no politician would dare back track after a strong statement like that, but you never know!
al_james··on Redis implementation in node.js
A nice toy.... Shows that node.js and javascript is actually a nice coding environment for server software. However, I am not confident of its stability or performance yet.

A Redius client library for node.js would be interesting.

al_james··on Lithium - another (new) PHP framework
There seems to be more about the typeface used for the logo rather than the framework. Nice.
al_james··on [dead]
Well thats official, 10.7 will be called 'Panzer'.
al_james··on IPhone 3D Texture Mapped City: Paris [video]
Yes amazing! Why on earth can't we do that level of graphics on the desktop web yet.... Its crazy.
