al_ak··on Social media can be a ‘profound risk’ to youth, surgeon general warns
I think you're underestimating the draw of para-social relationships. That's what powers the "social media" part of TikTok. I think it would be disingenous to suggest that TikTok is anything other than social media.

It's literally not the job of consumers to provide for your income. That may be a harsh lesson, but it's true.
al_ak··on Twitter rolls back AMP support, no longer sends users to AMP pages
> the truth is that with AMP the pages load faster, and are slimmer - with no exceptions

I'm not sure this is as universally true as you think it is

al_ak··on Twitter rolls back AMP support, no longer sends users to AMP pages
What happened to all the AMP defenders that used to flood the comment section?

Reddit literally does not care about the usability of their mobile site: https://old.reddit.com/r/mobileweb/comments/o7wo1s/this_subr...
al_ak··on Apple acquires classical music streaming service Primephonic
It'd be great if there was a music service that somehow incorporated the metadata in something like the Allmusic database. Say for example, while listening to an album, you could click on any side member and easily access any other album they'd played on. Same with songwriters, or album producers, recording engineers, etc. You can get all or most of this manually, but tied into a listening interface would be pretty slick.

That said, I don't know how much of a market there'd be for this

al_ak··on The thing standing between procrastination and daily progress is ritual
Procrastination is largely an emotional management issue. Strategies like this can still be helpful for many people, but this doesn't really address the core issue

al_ak··on Burnout can exacerbate work stress, further promoting a vicious circle
I would somewhat disagree. While I don't think the factors you mention can be ignored, putting too much emphasis on them starts to feel like anxiety. It's a lot easier to cede personal time to your employer when you've already convinced yourself that they deserve it. Anxiety just makes it easier to fall into that trap
al_ak··on How to stop procrastinating by using the Fogg Behavior Model
That sounds pretty great actually. I just know what for me, none of this really "clicked" until I had someone to work through these emotions with

I really do hope your page helps some people with their procrastination issues. But I can't help feel like your whole approach suffers from engineers disease. But maybe that's what will resonate with some folks.

A compassionate therapist can also do wonders for procrastination.

al_ak··on Symbian Won
I'm still bitter about their Indiegogo campaign. I did get half a refund, so that's better than most failed crowdsourced projects.

al_ak··on PostgreSQL is the worlds’ best database
This is very typical in an enterprise shop where you have end users connecting directly to the database for reporting purposes. Being able to take advantage of your existing directory structure and security groups is huge.
al_ak··on Things I Believe About Software Engineering
Yet formal correctness is about "getting things 100% correct 100% of the time" to the greatest extent possible (you can mathematically prove the "correctness" of a program using formal methods, but it still has to run on actual hardware and you're assuming there are no bugs in your tooling).
al_ak··on 30-plus years of HyperCard, the missing link to the Web (2012)
I know Alaska used Lotus Domino (a web framework with Lotus Notes as the development stack) in the late '90s to put some of their services online (job postings/electronic applications is the big one I remember). It worked pretty well at the time, but finding Lotus Domino developers isn't easy since it's such a niche product
