akulbe··on Claude Opus 5.5
I think it is an intentional crisis for PR purposes. They're (Anthropic and OpenAI) trying to absolve themselves of all responsibility for what happens. Big bad scary model did this terrible thing... OH NO!!

They made the models. They're responsible for what happens with them. Own it, all of it.

More government involvement is not the answer. Police your own stuff. Own it when things go sideways. Fix it.

I'm not trying to say safety isn't an issue. It sure is. But THEY need to own it, and do it themselves, and own all the consequences when bad things happen.

"Rogue agents"... yeah, sure. Owned and controlled by the companies in question.

The companies are responsible for what their agents do. Full stop. More government regulation is NOT the solution. The government doesn't even know how this stuff works, like the individual companies do.

The agents hacking other companies? those are crimes. If you did it, you'd be in jail. Why should/do the companies escape accountability?

It's a manufactured crisis, the whole "pace the frontier" call.
akulbe··on Day 13. Three production applications on AWS down
My experience when I didn't have business support was that it could take multiple days to get a response to support cases I'd put in.

When I was working on a customer account that had business support, I'd get a response (and often, a resolution) the same day. YMMV.

akulbe··on Day 13. Three production applications on AWS down
If you're going to be deploying a production-grade application to AWS, are you paying for business support? That's where I'd start.

Are you wholly dependent on AWS tech for your app, or can it be deployed to a different cloud provider?

akulbe··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
More VMware - winning friends and influencing people, like usual.
akulbe··on .name Termination
I don't get the concept of 3LD. We own kulbe.name - does this news mean it's going to go away entirely?

akulbe··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Like some other folks, I wonder whether this will be a good thing, or a bad thing.

I feel like if Nvidia ends up turning into a bad actor, in terms of restricting/censoring models... another HF will spring up.

akulbe··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Truer words were never spoken. This is painfully true.
akulbe··on Claude Code May–August 2026 weekly limits promotion
I posted on LinkedIn that I thought the future of AI will be local. I'm surprised I didn't get tarred and feathered, but it's been crickets.

I do believe it though. While the subsidies of the frontier providers are nice, they can't continue forever.

With the DeepMind guy leaving the building... isn't Gemini going to get old and crusty, and fall into disrepair?

I'm mostly serious here. Aside from Gmail and search, it feels Google doesn't have a good track record for maintaining things.

It really makes me wonder... if key people are leaving, what's going to happen? The Google graveyard is pretty big.

akulbe··on How to Install Python3.14 from source on Ubuntu 26.04
Hey, I've done this before. It wasn't until after I went through that process that I learned about the Deadsnakes PPA.

You can add this PPA (personal package archive) to your Ubuntu install. Then you can use apt to do the install of the newer version.

https://launchpad.net/~deadsnakes/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Just another alternative method, and potentially easier/faster.

akulbe··on Desktop Linux just cracked 10% market share – and Windows 11 is mostly to blame
I read another comment somewhere this morning that said this was false... that the numbers are inflated. I wonder if it's true, or not.

akulbe··on Why We're Dropping Basecamp
This is from 2023.
akulbe··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
I bought a full spec M5 Max MBP. Yesterday.

I'm relieved.

akulbe··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
$7349, and as of today, it'd be $10149
akulbe··on Apple increases MacBook and iPad prices by 20%
That's why I updated, as well.
akulbe··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
No, M5 Max MBP with all the options.

I wanted a Studio, but if I was going to get a Studio, I'd get something older because they crippled the current models.

I have an M2 Max, as well, and I wonder what I could get for it on resale... or maybe I should just keep it.

akulbe··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
WOW. I'm glad I bought the beast yesterday.

The same spec machine I got yesterday is now $2800 more.

akulbe··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
I have an M2 Max MBP with 96GB of RAM. What models and setup would you use for this kind of configuration?
akulbe··on SoftBank's Masayoshi Son: AI revolution is '50x bigger' than the dot-com boom
Which means that the bubble pop will be that much worse too.
akulbe··on Meta launches Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp subscriptions
Do subscriptions make the ads go away? If not, it's hard to see much value proposition in them.
akulbe··on Ask HN: Laptops with good Linux support and good build quality?
Framework.
akulbe··on Ask HN: Mac users – has Mac-to-Android texting broke for you, since macOS 26.5?
Checked that. It's not off.
akulbe··on Ask HN: Mac users – has Mac-to-Android texting broke for you, since macOS 26.5?
Mac-to-Android texting with the Messages app is broken for me, as of macOS and iOS 26.5

I'm just curious to know if other users have experienced this, before I go to extreme troubleshooting steps.

I can send direct from the iPhone, but the forwarding from the Mac feature is broken for messages destined for Android devices.

I spent a couple hours on the phone with Apple Support and did extensive troubleshooting, and they finally told me I should reinstall macOS. Seems pretty extreme, to me.

How is that machine for local inference? It's a serious consideration for me, but getting to hear more from folks that already have it would be helpful.
akulbe··on Gemini 3.5 Flash
One of the things I'm wondering about is what I'm missing for $LLM to create files on the local FS like Claude and Codex do. What I see instead is stuff just printing to stdout, rather than files on the filesystem.

What am I missing?

akulbe··on Gemini 3.5 Flash
Any chance you'd be willing to talk further about your setup? I have 2 x 3090s in a local machine, and I'm still left with questions about how best to use stuff locally.
