akuji1993··on Show HN: TimeSnapper for Mac is available now
I'm not sure I agree with you, in that the recognition is more important than the new icon here. I think, if you keep the name the same, I'd swap out the icon faster to have some eye caught new customers instead. But that's a hard decision to make, I can completely understand your argument.
akuji1993··on Show HN: TimeSnapper for Mac is available now
One thing about the App. As someone dealing a lot with customers, UX, UI design etc. You definitely need another logo.

This icon says "This is something really old and complicated. This is for the 40-something businessman, not for you tech-savy youth", or something in that direction.

akuji1993··on Show HN: TimeSnapper for Mac is available now
Maybe you can put an article out about that, if one of you guys enjoys doing those :) Sounds like something I'd be interested to read.
akuji1993··on Devilution – A web port of the original Diablo game
MacOS 10.14.3 and Chrome 75.0.3770.142 here. Not sure what's the issue.
akuji1993··on Equifax removed the $125 claim payout option after millions submitted claims
This is absolutely the case for Germany yeah. We only take credits out for cars and houses mostly. Taking out a credit for common or ordinary items is very uncommon and looked down upon. It "shows" that the person can't handle money well or lives above their means.
akuji1993··on Devilution – A web port of the original Diablo game
Only prints "Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token <" in the console on Chrome under MacOS.

Edit: Same in Firefox

akuji1993··on Radioactive ruthenium from an undeclared major nuclear release in 2017
> All major media would be extremely interested and talk about it for months.

I think you meant, talk about it on page 5 of the paper or on some sidebar on the website, be enraged for exactly two days and then immediately drop the topic and don't do any followup?

akuji1993··on Some items from my “reliability list”
Oh no, that wasn't at all what I meant. I just wanted to mention another tool, that can reduce issues with your production code. Rollbacks need to be there in any case.
akuji1993··on Ask HN: Twitter perma-banned my popular bot for a false reason
> Ultimately, the only way to get any support from Twitter is to make big scene on social media, and I really don't want to do this.

Then I'd suggest you look for something new to do, because nothing except that will raise their attention to a level where they might investigate.

akuji1993··on Some items from my “reliability list”
Sure, it's just another net the bug has to fall through though. And one that catches a lot of errors, at least for us.

The biggest impacts for our code health are

- Typescript

- Automated Testing through Gitlab CI

akuji1993··on Some items from my “reliability list”
I think something that's missing in this list is to have a really good and consistent QA cycle. You need to have rollbacks, I agree, but even better is, when bugs can't even make it into your production build. Having automated testing set up, (actually correctly done) code reviews and quality gateways in place can save you a lot of time rolling back your code. Catch the bug before it goes into live.
akuji1993··on Winnti: Hackers attacking the heart of German industry
> Some news websites hesitate to put external links in their articles because they lead readers off the site

For me, this is almost always a sign, that they don't think that high about their own content. If your content is great and you write engaging articles that are interesting to the reader, he will return. Trying to stop the reader from leaving, in a browser tab he can close at any time, is kind of ridiculous to me..

akuji1993··on Some items from my “reliability list”
Depends on your updating architecture.. If you have a central backend service, but scheduled patches or the user has to manually update, that might become a problem. There could also be the case that client and backend can be updated independently and one might not be done before the other. The issue might only exist for a few minutes, or an hour, but would still be a huge impact on the software.
akuji1993··on Winnti: Hackers attacking the heart of German industry
Not really sure what is so obnoxious about this. The whole article is made up like the NYTimes interactive articles are. Quite a high design standard to compare to and they're doing pretty well. No idea what you are talking about.
akuji1993··on Evolutionary gene loss may explain why only humans are prone to heart attack
So people had less time to "wear the heart out", they moved significantly more and their diet probably was better then our average as long as they could eat regularly.
akuji1993··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
Thanks, I'll be sure to check those out.
akuji1993··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
Alright, so there's always a way to get my transaction through, nice.

Would you have any resource that is worth checking out to learn more about blockchain? I don't care about market analysis, economy. I just want to understand the underlying technology to know what's happening there. Book would be fine too.

akuji1993··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
Okay, that makes waaay more sense. Thanks for explaining.

Do I understand correctly, though? If I want to send a small amount of bitcoin, with a minimal fee, there is a possibility that that transaction won't go through, because no miner picks it up?

akuji1993··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
It tells me there are only 30.000 transactions? In the last block? Because that number seems very small compared to the hype that surrounds Bitcoin if that is "All Transactions of all time"
akuji1993··on Pixelfed – Federated Image Sharing
Okay, that might work for smaller groups. I guess my head is too much focused on hyper-scaling, which might actually not be the goal here... Other than scaling / hardware space, I think the idea is great btw. My first post sounded very negative, I actually like the idea a lot.
akuji1993··on Pixelfed – Federated Image Sharing
There is a massive drop in nodes at https://the-federation.info/pixelfed. Seems like a SPOF host deactivated their 50 something nodes?

Other than that I'm skeptical about this. If it doesn't host ads or any other money making scheme, how do you pay for servers to host some many pictures? Being image focused, I imagine the server gets expansive fast when your node becomes big. This might also explain the SPOF deactivating their node.

akuji1993··on Being Bored Is Good
Pink Floyd is also a band using a lot of "whitespace" as I usually call it (design infused I guess). In my opinion few people using silence in solos as good as Gilmour.
akuji1993··on [dead]
Yeah, seems like there is a second beta out since 20th of June: https://www.postgresql.org/about/news/1949/

But no full version released, yet.

akuji1993··on The Popularity of the 4.7″ iPhone
Funnily enough the SE my friends have is the exact reason I always test mobile CSS on the Chrome iPhone SE simulation, since if it fits that screen, it will probably fit the others as well.
akuji1993··on Iceland tire of tourists trashing their nature
Went on a roadtrip through England in 2017 with a friend.

Your second paragraph was the reason we didn't like it at Stonehenge. Busses and busses of people, littering everywhere. They had to prohibit going near the rocks, as people would break off parts of it to take home (who in their right mind would fucking do this), draw on them, damage them otherwise... Huge bummer for me and my friend.

On the other hand, wandering through Dartmoor, meeting 5 people the whole day was absolutely one of the best memories of the trip. Easy access, no effort required is exactly the tourist category that we didn't enjoy in the end.

akuji1993··on Twitter is rejecting posts containing JSFiddle URLs
They didn't get a response from Twitter. Github isn't really part of this.
akuji1993··on Tell HN: Work at a Startup Expo will be at YC on Saturday, June 29
As an improvement of the site, it would be great if I could filter the presenting companies by technologies (React, Angular, NodeJS etc.) to see which ones use technology that I can help with quicker.

Nothing more disappointing then reading the pitch, being excited about them and then reading they use tech that I have no experience with.

akuji1993··on A Rocket Built by Students Reaches Space
> For most of the history of spaceflight, sending a rocket to space required mobilizing resources on a national scale.

From the article. It's not that it is super hard to do nowadays if you have a near endless supply of resources and money, but for students in a science project it is a big deal.

akuji1993··on Show HN: Oya – New projects set up lightning fast
Fair point, thanks for pointing it out.
akuji1993··on Niki Lauda has died
Very good movie by the way. I'm only marginally interested in Formula 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it.
