akshatrathi··on India Is Electrifying Faster Than China Using Cheap Green Tech
None yet. The EU doesn't have much fiscal capacity. But there are signs that the EU is being forced to get creative and speed things up. The Mercosur deal is a good sign (despite some pending issues).

akshatrathi··on Primary energy vs final energy: why replacing fossil fuels may not be so hard
Totally right that what matters is greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Tackling them, however, is going to take all our muscles. Many climate deniers have used the 80% of primary energy from fossil fuel figure as a way to claim it's too hard to do anything about the problem or to say there's been little progress. That's misleading and I wrote the article to explain to correct that narrative.
akshatrathi··on Primary energy vs final energy: why replacing fossil fuels may not be so hard
I wrote the story. The efficiency here isn't breaking the first law of thermodynamics. It's just the industry's way of measuring how much work gets done for a certain amount of input. If the work is heating or cooling, then shifting heat from in one direction or another can be done using heat pumps, which move three units of thermal energy for every unit of electrical energy consumed. Might that explain the conundrum?
akshatrathi··on Europe is beating the US in the battery race–with China’s help
Maybe. The chances are entirely dependent on Tesla's success. Europe has many more carmakers making the bet. I'd wager Europe has better odds.

akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
It also happens to be my favorite thing about writing Qz articles. :)
akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
Good point. Didn't realize that was possible now. But makes sense given how long some electric cars have been now. Next time I write about LSEVs, I'll make a note to mention second-hand electric cars.
akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
They will be in the US, because there's supposed to be NHTSA-approved version. Given regulations in Europe, I assume that would be the case too.

That means this version has some more safety features than the the base model in China, which could explain why it costs more than 3x outside China.

akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
I don't for certain. In my trip to China, I couldn't meet makers of LSEVs. What I do know is that there are no subsidies in that market, which means carmakers won't survive if they don't make a profit. But it's a good question whether they are making that profit at the cost of human lives (no crash protection) or the environment (lead-acid batteries).

Got lost in the edit. Doh. Added now. Thanks!
akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
Yeah, I'd like to buy them at the price they sell it in China: $2,500.
akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
With a 450 kg load capacity, but yes.
akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
There will be an NHTSA approved road legal version, per Fox News https://www.foxnews.com/auto/new-half-ton-electric-pickup-co...
akshatrathi··on Cheap Chinese electric cars are coming to the US and Europe
I didn't say there's no crash protection on the Pickman. It's the $1000 cars sold in China that don't have them. Pretty sure that to qualify in the US and Europe, the Kaiyun car need to a minimum level of safety features.

akshatrathi··on Carbon Removal Technologies
I wrote a series on carbon capture technologies: https://qz.com/re/the-race-to-zero-emissions/

What I took away most was that carbon removal is now firmly a part of mitigating climate change. It's part of "Plan A" but also there is so much from the previous "Plan A" that will still need to work on. There are a number of carbon-capture technologies on current emissions that need to be deployed from power plants to cement factories.

I think you can do both. If anybody has the resources to do that, BEV does.

We've tried in some ways. What do you think no-discrimination policy is at work is about?
akshatrathi··on Bill Gates-led $1B energy fund expands startup portfolio fighting climate change
It's ludicrous to think good ideas only come from North America and white males. Carmichael Roberts agreed with me. His words were that my question felt "piercing" because he was not at liberty to tell me about some of the companies outside the US with diverse leadership, but he said he will soon say more. Rodi Guidero agreed and said to look at the BEV team. It's very diverse: http://www.b-t.energy/ventures/team/

We've tried being gender and race blind. But it's not helped us much, because systemic biases can't simply be overcome that way. There are good ideas in all corners, but if you want to elevate those that don't come from privileged backgrounds you have to work harder.

So the tech inside Zero Mass Water is not the same as dehumidifier. Instead, they use a sophisticated absorbent to selectively capture water, heat it to release the water, then sterilize and add minerals.

But you're right. It's the company that I was most surprised to see in the list. The economics don't yet make sense to me.

I pushed Carmichael Roberts (BEV's head of investing) to explain. He said he has studied water startups for years, and he really likes the tech. But more importantly, he is very impressed by Cody's skill to sell this unit and far wide. It's already in 16 countries.

akshatrathi··on It’s probably a myth that we’re sleeping less than we used to
Yes, other stages are important. But during polyphasic sleeping, which is when you sleep more than once in a day, your sleep stages can get split too. We even have some scientific evidence for it. Though we still don't understand it well. More within links here: http://qz.com/430415.
akshatrathi··on It’s probably a myth that we’re sleeping less than we used to
Thanks for your $0.02. I'm the author of the piece, and I know what you are talking about. I tried to cheat sleep for a year by sleeping approx 4.5 hours per day. More here: http://qz.com/430415 (slept 3.5 hours at night and took 3-4 naps of 20 mins in the day)

My experience was the same. I used to fall in REM very quickly, many times in the 20 min naps. Here I say REM but really I mean dreams and I'm taking dreams to be a proxy for REM.

akshatrathi··on It’s probably a myth that we’re sleeping less than we used to
I wrote the piece. Thanks for the feedback. I see it differently though.

If you look at the studies most people are sleeping between seven and nine hours, which is what the little research we have done on sleep says we need. The "myth" is that, as opposed to what the CDC says, the number of people sleeping less than the recommended hours hasn't increased. Thus the myth that most of us are not sleeping enough.
