Following one of the dealer links, looks like it is about $60,000 for a new one. https://www.bobcatofyork.com/default.asp?page=xInventoryDeta...
akovaski··on You can’t eat just any leaf (2018)
"Primary and Secondary compounds" => 403. "medicinal" => 200. "Monoculture leads to vulnerability" => 404. "Leaf for Life" => 404.

And the "medicinal" link to science direct returns a 403 if I attempt to retrieve the page with curl.

So, the sites are still up, but the links are in fact mostly dead.

The variable escaping behavior has existed for a while https://stackoverflow.com/questions/32463052/bash-tabbing-fo... https://askubuntu.com/questions/70750/how-to-get-bash-to-sto... https://askubuntu.com/questions/41891/bash-auto-complete-for...

And I experience the problematic behavior on my Ubuntu VM. However, I can get the above describe expansion behavior if I run: shopt -s direxpand

akovaski··on Nim 1.6
Ha, I wouldn't have thought to criticize the spacing, but I did see one person complain as I explored old Nim discussions. Nim being strict on tabs is something I see as a good feature for the same reason the style flexibility made me instinctively flinch back. I've experienced mixed tabs and spaces in Python code and I do not like it; the flexibility leads to inconsistency.
akovaski··on Nim 1.6
I started looking at Nim a few months ago, but I didn't like the feature where it ignores underscores and capitalization. It seems to me that this would make grepping harder on larger projects.

I suppose a linter or style-guidelines-and-not-making-mistakes invalidate this issue. For anyone that has used Nim, has this been a problem in practice?

> Where a surveillance state combined with ML analysis leads to something akin to pre-crime arrests

While I haven't seen Minority Report or Eagle Eye, this aptly describes the anime TV series Psycho-Pass (2012). If I remember correctly, the show is mostly focused on the effects of having a crime-coefficient system.

akovaski··on How to Read a Log Scale
To insert a bit of sanity: from a reply by the author, she indicates that she wasn't trying to introduce a novel concept with estimating an area using right trapezoids. I don't have access to the journal, so I can't read her entire comment.

akovaski··on The Magnetic Amplifier – A Lost Technology of the 1950s
Those would most likely be inductors or transformers. It is mentioned in the article how the simplistic Figures 2 & 3 magnetic amps would act as a transformer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toroidal_inductors_and_transfo...
akovaski··on Is the room open?
The +1 makes the range inclusive rather than exclusive. This matches the summary, which is inclusive of floor(500/k). Ceil wouldn't correctly handle the case where the number of rooms equals a perfect square. That is,

  [k**2 for k in range(1, ceil(484**0.5))]
does not return 484.

akovaski··on Cherry Picking: When People Ignore Evidence That They Dislike
"found that approximately 97% of them support the consensus position"

versus the more correct

"found that among abstracts expressing a position, approximately 97% of them support the consensus position"

Doesn't strike me as particularly 'wrong' or 'literally lying'. They are looking at where the consensus position lies on a particular idea that doesn't need to be mentioned in every abstract in the field. A paper to do with global warming can analyze reality without stating a cause for global warming in the abstract; that doesn't mean that the paper should count against one consensus position or another.

akovaski··on Show HN: Play rock paper and scissors against a untrained neural network
The problem is that that the player's move is actually being fed to the training data before the computer makes its prediction. Take a look at the variable 'y' after making your move and you'll see that it includes the player's last move. Because 'y' is updated before the computer makes its prediction, this shows that the computer uses the player's current move as part of the training set to decide its move.

akovaski··on The high speed of society has jammed our internal clock
I think there's a noticeable fundamental difference, in that humans have a natural walking pace. It's physically uncomfortable to slow your pace too much. They do both have the mental discomfort of being forced by a stranger to wait behind them, breathing down their neck.

On the other side, a slow walker often is walking slow because they naturally walk slowly. A slow driver often is driving slow because they decided they wanted to drive slow. (Or in either case, they're slow because they are distracted.)

I'm not an expert, but I presume "magnetic monopole antenna" refers to a monopole antenna[1] with some affiliation with magnetics. I presume the word "magentic" came from this description in the article:

The key part of an oscillator is the resonant tank circuit: an inductor and a capacitor. Energy sloshes back and forth between the inductor’s magnetic field and the capacitor’s electric field at a resonant frequency determined by the capacitance and inductance. In the new circuit, the team used the antenna itself as the inductor in the resonant tank. Because it was acting as an inductor, the antenna radiated using changing magnetic field instead of an electric field...

Though I don't follow the meaning of this paragraph, what with the energy sloshing. I guess it comes down to the antenna being used as an inductor.

akovaski··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
I do this. It works, but there are some shortcomings.

You have to install the Spotify App on your PC. Adding new songs has been incredibly flaky for me (not recognizing that I've put new songs in the folder, Windows 10). The artists and albums don't show up in the "Artists" or "Albums" part of my Spotify library.

akovaski··on The Bad News About Helicopter Parenting: It Works
> Is authoritarian and authoritative exclusively [...] jargon alone?

I'd say so, doing an internet search for "authoritarian vs authoritative" yields almost exclusively parenting articles.

In general, I think authoritarian is used for "you must do what I tell you" rule (governments, due the vocab word authoritarianism), and authoritative is used for "this is for sure the right way" objects and concepts (papers, sources, statements). The definition I have for authoritarian lines up with the parenting style, but authoritative does not line up so well.

My opinion from the outside is that it is not clear. They share the same root word from which their meanings derive; I'd assume they were talking about the same parenting style if it wasn't directly pointed out. If you applied these adjectives to Software Development or some other field, I would be hard-pressed to determine a clear distinction.

"Counting the losers" is part of R&D. Many companies invest in R&D, having failures is normal. According to Investopia[0], pharma companies float around the top of R&D spending. They indicate the semiconductor industry gets away with charging customers with more R&D spending. (Note, Investopedia doesn't cite any sources, so take it with a grain of salt.)

akovaski··on Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its Baby Powder
Asbestos brake pads are NOT illegal in the US, according to the EPA[0]. I have not been able to find any evidence that asbestos brake particulate is safe[1].

There are numerous places online saying that most brake pads no longer use asbestos, particularly OEM brake pads. Though I can't find any numbers to back this up. Also, I have no idea how carcinogenic the replacement materials are; I hope they are less dangerous than asbestos.
