akl··on Twitter Adds Places To Its Geo-Tweets, Just Don’t Call It A Check-In
FourSquare currently does this - they've been partnering with restaurants for some time:

http://foursquare.com/businesses/ (large list of businesses and some info on the program)

If you check in near a special, it'll tell you - also, if you check in near where your friend has left a 'tip', it will tell you as well.

I don't know if Gowalla has any similar functionality.

akl··on Chatroulette Data: Help Compile (NSFW)
Where are you getting this image data from, out of curiosity?

Also, any plans to publish a live report? I'd be more inclined to keep helping out if there were some interesting graphs I could look at; the promise of a future report is less enticing :)

akl··on Nginx WebServer Best Security Practices
.. and by 'moving those libraries' you mean 'copying' them, right? :)

A quick look at nginx's ./configure script doesn't show any options that enable static linking on the libraries, but that would be useful for looking into chrooting it.

akl··on Why Blackberry Needs Real Innovation
My bold can do that, though it's entirely likely he didn't know the path through the menus to open the .xls doc. The office-like suite opens .doc/.xls/.ppt, iirc.

It doesn't render properly 100% of the time, though, whereas my iPhone always seemed to.

akl··on [dead]
Why is losing 1000 people a week when the states in question have 24 million people (Texas) and 36 million people (California) notable? It seems like it's nearly impossible to determine 'why' given those population counts, personally.

(population sizes grabbed quickly from wikipedia)

akl··on TSA Security Directive SD-1544–09-06
.. kind of. There are some reports of these rules being enforced on domestic-only flights, too:

http://gizmodo.com/5435117/the-unofficial-guide-to-flying-af... (scroll down to the 'be ready for anything' part)

akl··on Ask HN: Plans for 2010
Develop a non-work life, if only for balance. I'd like to expand my ruby skills, too.
akl··on Amazon goes down; takes S3, Salesforce, Target, and others with them.
You are crazy for doing that - one instance of downtime doesn't justify ignoring all the advantages DNS brings.

akl··on I'm 20, brilliant and totally lost
I disagree that there's a specific reason for his feeling lost; this is probably due to still feeling some of that myself (I'm nearly 25), though.

That said, I joined a startup as his age. Younger, actually - I was 18. It was a good experience in that I learned a great deal of technical knowledge very quickly and it laid the path for the career that I've formed since then, but it's not a remedy for a spiritual problem.

I'll qualify my experience to say that the first startup I worked at was not a good company; our president was arguably a snake-oil salesman in a lot of ways, and myself/the other engineers often worked 'deathmarches' leading to a moment where I was literally told during a doctor's appointment that I would have a heart attack before I could legally drink if I didn't find a new job.

I don't regret the job, overall; I learned a lot professionally and personally, and the next startup was far more successful. I do regret not wandering a little more, though, and he should take this opportunity.

akl··on Perl 5.11 released
Maybe these also, if so inclined:

- new perlperf man page that looks interesting: http://search.cpan.org/~jesse/perl-5.11.0/pod/perlperf.pod

- 'use 5.11.0' also implies 'use strict' now, yay: http://search.cpan.org/~jesse/perl-5.11.0/pod/perl5110delta....

akl··on Apple’s Shadow Hangs Over Game Console Makers
I just don't see, with current hardware, the iPhone taking over the niche that the xbox360/ps3 serve for more serious gamers.

The serious types also seem like they'd be spending a lot more money, but I guess there are more casual gamers with $20 and an iPhone in terms of sheer wallets.

akl··on Perl Myths Talk 2009
I'll differ from berntb - you should learn Perl exactly because it's fairly similar to those languages you already know, and the effort required to do so will be minimal.

You may not end up using it all that frequently, but an hour or two seeing how another programming language does something is usually interesting perspective, imo.

akl··on Why education is about more than jobs
... from a teacher at open university, apparently.

I'm sure I'm biased as a college drop out myself, but I've never been impressed by abstract ('learn how to help society!', etc) type reasons to go to college.

akl··on Main Perl 6 Site - perl6.org
First instinct was to compare against websites of other programming languages, and (despite the poor choice of mascot) it occurs to me that I'm not really sure what a good programming language website would look like...

Ruby: http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/ (points for having sample code obviously placed!)

Python: http://www.python.org/

Haskell: http://www.haskell.org/

Erlang: http://erlang.org/

Perl5: http://www.perl.org/

PHP: http://www.php.net/

akl··on Crunchy - Python Tutorials in the Browser
I wonder if the project devs have thought of putting an instance of this up for the world? There's a solid version of this for ruby (http://tryruby.hobix.com/) I direct people to when they ask about the language, I'd like to see more "try this programming language on the spot" type setups available, it's a shame I can't host them myself.
